There's been a lot of news from the world of fighting games, especially since WWE 2K14 is approaching release and EA UFC is allowed to pull back the curtain a bit more.

Let's get to it...

EA UFC Adds Women's Division

One of the recent developments for EA UFC is that it will feature a playable roster of women for the first time ever in a UFC game. The company only confirmed that champion ... Read More

With E3 just around the corner, the big three fighting games are all in different places on the spectrum. Amusingly, we haven't really actually seen anything from the upcoming games, even though we're hearing a lot about them.

The Fate of Fight Night

In a recent statement, EA has directed some cynicism towards its generally well-liked Fight Night brand, and the company seems to have shifted its focus ... Read More

In the deluge of financial information that EA revealed this week, it was noted that there won't be a UFC product until after March of 2014. I'd say this is a bit of surprise, as EA's fighting products have been lurking in the shadows for a while now. This means that the earliest we're likely to see a UFC product from EA is the summer of 2014, but it is conceivable that it could be pushed to the fall. Still, the spring/summer seems ... Read More

With 2K announcing that The Rock will be on the cover of WWE 14, it got me thinking about the role of covers in the sports game business. Obviously, there is some fan interaction and input by having cover votes and the like, but in this day and age of sports, can one person really embody all that is good and desirable about the sport?

With the WWE choosing The Rock as their cover athlete, it sends a ... Read More

After reading about Ring Kings, a project boxing management sim that is looking for funding on Kickstarter (interview with devs forthcoming), it got me thinking about indie games and how the fighting game space can leverage crowd-sourcing to fill the gaps left by the current crop of AAA products.

Ring Kings looks to fill the gap left by the Fight Night series by providing a deep simulation management ... Read More

** Disclaimer: This list consists of games from the last generation of consoles (Xbox 360, PS3, Wii). Some of these games are being ranked according to the standards of the year they came out and the improvements they showed relative to what had come before **

5) EA Sports MMA

I enjoyed what EA Sports MMA tried to do in a lot of ways, and it's fights definitely resembled more of an actual ... Read More

With all the love the original Punch-Out! gets, I think it's easy to overlook how cool Super Punch-Out! was. Sure, it wasn't the singular title that everyone loved back on the NES, and it didn't have Mike Tyson, but it was still a pretty cool follow-up that added crazier characters, new gameplay wrinkles and a good dose of challenge.

What was ... Read More

While Ken Burns is known for his various works on war-time America and other pockets of U.S. history, one of his lesser-known but equally impressive works is Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson. It aired as a two-parter on PBS almost a decade ago, and it's available in various formats, including through Netflix. In fact, someone still has the whole thing on youtube (Part I is here, and Part II is here.)

NHL 13

* ESPN and EA finished their season simulation (while the lockout was underway), and there were some surprising results. I thought the Stanley Cup winner was interesting, considering what I had mentioned about this last week. Check out the full breakdown here.

I'll definitely be talking about this topic with more detail in the future, but it recently just jumped out at me how the big three fighting franchises are really in a state of limbo at this point.

With THQ's financial state very much on the brink, it seems even more likely that many of their assets will be sold off. Of course, they already pre-emptively sold the UFC licence to EA, but that title ... Read More

Hey, folks. As OS steps into a new year, I'm stepping out of the shadows as your go-to source for hockey-related news as well as happenings in the fighting game scene (MMA, wrestling and boxing).

Now, hopefully I don't end up having a debut like our friend above, but I feel fairly confident that I'll be able to bring you some meaningful insights into these genres. I've been covering games now for ... Read More
