My EASHL team, Lando Commando, has had a fairly good time with the first week or so of EASHL action. We've been able to get up to Div 6 in that time (schedule permitting), and now we're starting to bump up against some of the more "seasoned" veterans in the mode. We've been playing in the EASHL for the entire time it's been around, and the mode still has an amazing co-op experience, even if there can be some frustrations form time ... Read More

After playing some more NHL 14 this week, I'm still having a fun time with the new elements, including the improved skating and defense as well as the dramatically better hitting and fighting. It's been fun to have the "seasons" feature for EASHL and HUT, and even OTP is working a bit better now thanks to the improved check-in process before games.

At the same time, there's been lots of feedback from around the web ... Read More

There's been a lot of news from the world of fighting games, especially since WWE 2K14 is approaching release and EA UFC is allowed to pull back the curtain a bit more.

Let's get to it...

EA UFC Adds Women's Division

One of the recent developments for EA UFC is that it will feature a playable roster of women for the first time ever in a UFC game. The company only confirmed that champion ... Read More

Having spent a good deal of time with NHL 14 now, I feel I can say with some confidence that the gameplay is a strong improvement over last year's version. The added physicality really helps define an aspect of the gameplay that had been lacking up until now, and the team at EA Vancouver has made some other smart changes that are more of the iterative variety.

The two most successful elements this year are the new ... Read More

When I wrote an earlier piece about 10 matches that will likely appear in WWE 2K14's "30 Years of Wrestlemania" mode, I was just speculating on the possible match combinations and competitors that 2K might include in the game. Now that 2K has revealed the full roster as well as a trailer associated with it, it's much easier to make some informed speculation on what matches will be included in the mode.

For those that ... Read More

Something I've been thinking about recently, especially in relation to the feedback about the NHL 14 demo, is the realities of an actual sport as compared to what is actually "fun" when played in a videogame. Everyone has their own concept of what is real, what is fun, and what should be represented in a videogame. People often use qualifiers of how much hockey they play or watch in order to weigh-in on the particulars of the on-ice ... Read More

One of the more impressive things coming out of Gamescom 2013 is the pre-alpha gameplay trailer for EA Sports UFC. The trailer ended up being an expanded version of some of the elements that we saw at E3 2013, but it looks even more encouraging than what we were shown a couple of months back.

The first thing to keep in mind is that the gameplay being shown is pre-alpha, as the title ... Read More

The demo for NHL 14 has been released, and now everyone is getting a chance to say what they think about the new hitting and fighting as well as the changes to skating, deking and defense. The demo more or less reinforces what I felt about the game from my E3 impressions, as I like the changes to gameplay, generally speaking, but I'm still not too enthused about the aged presentation and weak new modes (Live the Life, NHL 94 Anniversary). ... EA has released a final blog detailing the collisions, incidental contact and goalie interference changes for NHL 14. A lot of these items are just refinements of what was already in last year's game, and some of them are even revived features that were present in NHL 12. For the most part, these iterations will be welcome, but the default sliders will dictate the impact of some of the key changes. ... Read More

I'll give 2K Sports some credit, as I didn't think they would do all that much with the retro stuff they had been touting. I'm pleasantly surprised that the "campaign" concept that the Attitude Era mode from last year created is being leveraged to highlight great moments in the (almost) 30-year history of the WWF/WWE's biggest pay-per-view event. The Attitude Era stuff from last year was really entertaining thanks to the slick presentation ... Read More

After watching the surprise knockout of Anderson Silva a few weeks back, I wondered about the viability of showboating and "faking the funk" in combat sports, but also in the context of fighting games in general. There were definitely some pundits and fighters who were backing Weidman in the fight, but I think the conventional wisdom was that it was going to be a grind-it-out type of fight for Weidman or a dominant ... EA has finally posted a blog with a trailer and some details about the new "Live the Life" mode for NHL 14. The mode is a long-awaited revamp of the Be-A-Pro career option that's been present in the NHL series for the last few years. Many fans of the series were hopeful that this new spin on a career mode would freshen up the stale Be-A-Pro experience, especially if it was to borrow elements from the ... Read More

The 2013-2014 NHL season will bring a shuffle in the league's divisions, and it will have some meaningful impacts for teams in both conferences. The chief reason for the realignment is to create a bit more parity with some of the geography of the teams and their travel schedules, but it also has the knock-on effect of allowing a few teams to change conferences and for a fresh look to the overall league. ... EA recently released a blog post that detailed the improvements to the online offerings for NHL 14. Since the EASHL and online team play are popular modes amongst the core fanbase of the franchise, it's always interesting to see how EA curates the community and tweaks the experience from year to year.

This year the team has addressed a few usability and matchmaking issues that have been bothersome over the last few ... Read More

Business reality. That's the reason NHL 14 is taking the easy transition towards next-gen development. There is no financial reason the franchise should risk the modest gains it has made in this generation for some paltry sales on the new consoles.

The fact is that hockey is still a fledgling sport in many markets, even though it remains popular amongst its fanbase and within the videogame community. Larger franchises, ... Read More
