Bowman - "Havy has paid his dues, and is one of the best assistants, if not the best assistant out there. Will that translate to the head coaching position at the NHL level, only time will tell, but we like what he had to say and we like being able to hire a leader that has been with the organ-i-zation for so long, he knows what we expect, and he knows the guys.
Haviland - "As much as it hurts to see Q go, I'm thrilled that I get an opportunity in a City that has a passion for winning the equals mine. I'm excited to get started, and ready for opening day already, the goal remains unchanged, Stanley or bust."

Not necessarily a shocker, but a shock to the system for sure. This definitely signals a change in direction for the Hawks. Some sources close to the situation are saying that this may have been more Coach Q's decision than Bowman's as retirement was creeping closer, but ultimately when the time came to offer a new deal, there was no offer and Joel was informed he would not be returning. The off-season is off to a crazy start, stay tuned
Quick Hit-
"Over the past three years I think Stan has taken great strides to not only ice a competitive team but keep the focus on winning the Cup, while also being financially responsible. I'm happy to keep him here for at least another five years, as I see a Cup in our near future, and a lot of that credit will go to Stan when that happens." Said Team President John McDonough in a statement released today.
Bowman - "I'm thrilled to be back, this is where I want to be, and we haven't accomplished our goal yet, I'm not a quitter, I want to see this through. I started it and I want to finish it with a Cup, and I expressed that to Mr. McDonough when I sat down with him, now I need to prove to him, the team, and the City that he made the right decision"
Well, the proving starts.. NOW, this off-season is going to have a little bit of everything as some high priced guys are up, there are going to be more decisions made here that might not be popular, but are necessary.... here.. we... go..

Congrats to the ST LOUIS BLUES for winning the Stanley Cup, wonder if things would have been different if we could have won the division.

The #1 seeded Sharks send the Hawks into an uncertain off-season to say the least. "At the beginning of the season I thought we had a chance to win the Cup especially after coming so close the year before, I thought we improved and our play on the ice was proving that. For whatever reason we hit a wall, after the 40 game mark we were just mediocre, and because of that we lost the division to St. Louis, and ended up having to face the #1 seed in the second round, overall I'm not happy with this season, but I like where we are headed," said Bowman. When asked about not only his uncertain future but his Coach's he replied, "If I'm still in the position that I am in today then we will evaluate things as a group and go from there, I think we have the right people in the right spots."
Quick Hit -
Solid series for the boys, all around. The offense looked like itself, the goaltending and defense were a tight group as well. Hawks won the series 4 games to 1, the series was probably closer than it looked. Every game was competitive, every game was close, it could have went either way. So the Hawks will take it, and move on to face the # 1 seeded San Jose Sharks in the second round, as there were no upsets in the first round, go figure.

Success is measured all sorts of ways, and expectations go a long way towards determining whether a season was a success or not. So, was this season a success for the Hogs? I don't know?
Coach Cotino - "Losing is never what you want, you never want to finish a season with a loss, then turnaround and be satisfied with it. I'm happy with what we were able to accomplish, not only for this team but for the Hawks organ-i-zation. More guys took steps forward this year than I thought would at the beginning of the year. Finishing as a #1 seed you have that expectation to go far, or even go all the way, but the fact that we weren't in the playoffs the last two years played a roll in the outcome. Guys have never been there, sure they may have played in the playoffs in Junior's, but this is a different animal altogether, and all in all I'm happy with what we were able to accomplished, but none of us are satisfied."
Thanks Coach, that doesn't clear it up or answer the question at all, but the Hogs performed this year, and maybe even outperformed the expectations people had going into the year. Year two under Cotino should be just as exciting as a new crop of rookies are ready to make the jump, and take one step closer to the ultimate goal of skating with and winning a Cup with the Hawks.

Comments:
Horrible month, and changes were made, the trigger was finally pulled (details after this update). This was what I was worried about, a huge start to the season and then a trail off, the important thing is not to fall off too much, and that is exactly what is happening. The month started promising, but we lost 6 in a row to end the month, 7 of our last 8. This is the wrong time of year for this to be happening. Hawks are now only 2 points above their closest competitor in the division and are in danger of falling out of home ice advantage for the 1st round. Things need to turn around, and fast because the West in not going to sit around and wait for you to figure it out.

It's amazing when a team comes together. Still some ups and downs, but the team is playing very well right now, and I'm pumped with Brandon Saad. Saad put up 19 points this month, including 11 goals. Another bright spot was the continued success of Niemi, the numbers seem to be staying the same, but the Wins keep going up so that is great to see. Certain guys have the ability to win games, make big saves when they need to, and maybe Niemi is becoming that guy.

Comments:
When a team is going good, especially good, there isn't much to write about for the beat writers, but they might be on to something. Is Corey Crawford good enough to take the Hawks to the Stanley Cup, and win it? He has proven to be a stellar goaltender in the regular season and in the playoffs, it's the little stretches that don't seem like much in the regular season, but could mean the end of the season in the playoffs. The jury is still out, and the Hawks don't have any immediate plans to move the stellar goalie, but one has to think that this is stirring or at least half way on the back burner in Bowman's head. A decent month for the boys, after the first two months all the Hawks need to do is just play their game the rest of the way to secure home ice, hopefully throughout the playoffs, and by no means is that a gimmie as a few teams continue to play at a high level. Deadline is lurking, and the Hawks are positioning themselves with a move as scouts have been seen all over the NHL and AHL, as well as the European leagues, obviously that's nothing new given the time of year, but something is up and that comes from a FEW sources close to this team.
