Ron Burgundy's Game Notes
That was a great pitching duel between Correia and Lilly, it came down to the bullpens to get their jobs done, and thankfully ours did.
Kevin Correia keeps on amazing me this season, he came in with a 2.05 ERA and lowered it to 1.94.
Gonzo and Hairston hit absolute bombs, but it came down to Angel Guzman throwing a wild pitch that gave us the win.
Great job by Heath Bell and Cla Meredith to pitch two great innings that kept us in it and get us to a victory.
Kevin Kouzmanoff really needs to pick it up on defense. He's already committed 8 errors at third base.

Series Preview

San Diego Padres (15-17, 3rd in NL West, 5.0 GB) @ Chicago Cubs (15-17, 3rd in NL Central, 3.0 GB)

Cubs Top Hitters
1. Mike Fontenot (.358, 3 HR, 20 RBI)
2. Geovanny Soto (.297, 5 HR, 18 RBI)
3. Milton Bradley (.307, 4 HR, 18 RBI)

Probable Pitchers (Subject to Change)
Kevin Correia (2-2, 2.05 ERA) vs. Ted Lilly (1-1, 3.96 ERA)
Shawn Hill (2-1, 2.74 ERA) vs. Sean Marshall (0-5, 9.12 ERA)
Jeff Niemann (3-3, 5.40 ERA) vs. Rich Harden (4-1, 2.70 ERA)

Ron Burgundy's Thoughts
Coming into this series with the Cubs we are still in a tie for third place in the National League West. We go into Wrigley Field with an identical record to the team from the north side of Chicago, but they are a very dangerous team. Mike Fontenot is hitting the ball like he never has in his life right now, and he is carrying a team that features many weapons. Our offense is hitting the ball very well right now too, so we could have a great showdown with the Cubbies. In our first two games of this series we have our two most solid pitchers this season going, Kevin Correia and Shawn Hill. Peavy and Young had great complete game outings in the previous two games, hopefully those two can continue the streak of good pitching for us. I am ready to have a great time in Wrigley Field this week, maybe they'll let me sing during the seventh inning stretch, I'd really show those fans how a winner does things.

Ron Burgundy's Game Notes
Well we weren't able to pull off the sweep and move into first place, but we are still moving in the right direction.
This was a great pitchers duel, it was neat to see Chris Young pitch the entire game for himself even though he got the loss.
Scott Hairston has been made the primary left fielder because he is hitting the lights out right now, Chase Headley will make spot starts in left and at third.
David Eckstein continues to raise his average up to around the Mendoza Line.
This was a positive series for us, chalk up another win in the bigger picture, that's quite a few series we've won in a row.
The bullpen has gotten two much needed days of rest and are good to go now.

There's six wins in a row. We are also creeping up on getting back to .500, something our guys should be very proud of.
What a game by Jake Peavy. He ran into trouble early then spun a gem. I think the Jake Peavy of old is back.
Adrian Gonzalez wins the hitter of the game again, if he really catches fire our opponents are in for a hurting.
We are looking for our third sweep in a row tomorrow, this has been an amazing turnaround for us.
The Astros have been terrible this season, I wouldn't be surprised if they started shopping their stars around soon.

Make it five wins in a row and eight out of our last ten. Our team is really rolling.
Jeff Niemann looked great out there, if only he could be more consistent then he could be something special.
Adrian Gonzalez continued his hot hitting in this game. He's not driving many in but he's leading the league in walks and is getting on base like crazy.
Our bullpen came in and pitched one-hit ball over four innings, capped off by another save by Cla Meredith.
We hit Roy Oswalt around, but being the great pitcher he is he kept us from scoring the majority of the time.

Chris Young (3-1, 4.31 ERA) vs. Wandy Rodriguez (0-3, 6.89 ERA)

Ron Burgundy's Thoughts
It feels weird not saying that our team is in last place. We are in a pivotal spot in our season though because we are sitting in a three way tie, and if one of the teams starts to spudder they could get left behind the other two. Luckily we are playing a very poor team so we have a good chance of pulling ahead of the other two. We have a nice 4 game winning streak going, and during that our pitching has been great. We really need Jeff Niemann to step up in the first start, because in the second we are having wildly inconsistent Jake Peavy going against Roy Oswalt. The Astros are struggling due to their offense, but Minute Maid Park is a launching pad most days so we have to be careful with them. They have talent, it's just not coming together for them right now. What is coming together recently is our offense. We are hitting on all cylinders lately and we look to keep it going in this three game set. I talked to my good friend Champ Kind, he really likes where we are going right now, and that's good enough for me. While I'm gone in Houston stay classy San Diego, and we'll bring some class to those Astros fans.

Ron Burgundy's Game Notes
There's another sweep, we set out to win these four games and were able to do just that.
This win pulled us into a three way tie for third place with the Diamondbacks and the Rockies.
Another great pitching performance from Shawn Hill, our starting pitching is really on fire during this stretch.
We recently put David Eckstein back in the order and he has really started to swing the bat since he's been reinserted.
Cla Meredith has gotten a ton of work this week, so this time the spot save went to Joe Thatcher, who has an ERA of under 2.00 in a setup role.
We play a very weak Houston team next, hopefully we can keep this winning streak alive.

Ron Burgundy's Game Notes
We are on a roll. It couldn't come at a better time either because we've caught fire on a streak of games against division foes.
Kevin Correia is pitching amazingly this season. His ERA keeps getting lower and lower.
Brian Giles was on base all day long, as was Adrian Gonzalez, who scored two of our three runs.
Cla Meredith struck out two in the ninth and has lowered his ERA to right around 3. He's working out great as our closer.
Kevin Kouzmanoff had a rough day in the field with 2 errors, he needs to work on that aspect of his game for us.
This win gives us a three game winning streak, and in our last 10 we are 7-3, a very good record.

Ron Burgundy's Thoughts
One thousand one, one thousand two...Oh, I'm sorry, I was working out. I wasn't expecting you. I don't know if you heard but I was over a thousand. Anyways, here's another short series against a division rival. This time we face the Arizona Diamondbacks. Even though this series is only two games, is it huge for us. If we sweep the D'Backs here we have a chance to climb out of the cellar into a tie for third place. We have favorable pitching matchups as well as our two most consistent pitchers Kevin Correia and Shawn Hill take the mound for us. The Arizona Diamondbacks have been an absolute offense power so far this year, but they have terrible pitching up to this point. We need to jump on their pitching and keep Mark Reynolds and company in the ballpark. I'm loving where our team is right now, we have a real chance to make a dent in the standings this week.

We have our two game sweep we were looking for in this series, it jumped us up nicely in the division.
Our team is firing on all cylinders right now, the hitting is there, the pitching is there, we are playing good baseball.
Chris Young pitched very well today, even though he couldn't go deep our bullpen stepped up and kept us on top.
Heath Bell and Cla Meredith have been lights out lately, they pitched perfect 8th and 9th's respectively.
Jody Gerut has been solid as our main leadoff man, he suits that role well with his great contact and speed.

Ron Burgundy's Game Notes
There's the Jake Peavy we all know. He made a few mistakes, but for the most part was his old dominating self.
Lots of people had Ubaldo Jimenez being a great pitcher this year, he hasn't put up any results yet.
Nick Hundley put another homer on the board, he has already surpassed his career high of 5.
Cla Meredith came back from a day's rest and pitched a clean ninth to pick up another save.
Chase Headley continues to struggle, he's batting under .200. He's got potential, but at some point he may give up his permanent spot to Scott Hariston, who's on fire.
Another move might be giving David Eckstein another shot at second base, Edgar V. Gonzalez has hit a wall.

Ron Burgundy's Thoughts
This is an interesting short two games series. We have our ace and number two starters going against two of their weaker pitchers, but Peavy and Young haven't exactly had top of rotation stuff. Peavy had one great start, then fell back to sub-par pitching in his last start. Chris Young is really starting to come around, he's somebody our rotation can fall in line with and be very successful. Our offense has been firing on all cylinders lately, Scott Hairston and Adrian Gonzalez have really jump started their games. We have to be careful though because the Rockies have a very potent offense. Ian Stewart is hammering the ball this year, and Dexter Fowler has been very active in being the best rookie in the NL so far this year. With a two game sweep here we can get right in the mix with the rest of the NL West, that's something we need to shoot for to keep our hopes alive for 2009. It's good to be back in San Diego, I'll see you all at Tino's after the game for some great steak and scotch.

Ron Burgundy's Game Notes
Even though we dropped this game, we still end this four game stand with three wins against the division leader.
Jeff Niemann was not sharp at all out there today, he continues to be a roller coaster, high highs and low lows.
Heath Bell came in and pitched 3.2 innings of perfect baseball, he continues to impress after a slow start.
Everth Cabrera was all over the field today, he hasn't been getting on base much, but when he does the other team pays.
Manny Ramirez got on a roll today, when he's locked in there isn't much you can do with him.
Tonight we head back to San Diego for a much needed stop at Casa de Burgundy and I get to see my furry friend Baxter.
