15 current MLB players from Indie League(s)

The nicest fact about the 15 Independent Baseball graduates who started the season in the major leagues, a list that includes Arizona’s Max Scherzer (technically on the disabled list but planned on as a starting pitcher), is that nine of them started their professional career in a non-affiliated league.

This includes righthander Chris Jakubauskas, who hurled two scoreless innings in his major league ... Read More

Mariners pitcher Ryan Rowland-Smith met Tuesday afternoon with team medical director Dr. Edward Khalfayan in an effort to get to the bottom of what's ailing his left arm. Rowland-Smith has been unable to throw for over a week, since going on the disabled list with left triceps tendinitis. "I feel miserable," Rowland-Smith said after Tuesday's game. "Just all the waiting around, but I have to be patient. It's not something too crazy like I'm going to be shut down for three months or something like ... Read More

......after spending the time to drink 3/4 of a triple iced latte researching this phenomena....something struck me as glaringly obvious...the number of home runs hit by visiting teams, I will come to the hasty conclusion that perhaps the Yankee pitch selection might be a bigger factor than how the wind blows....I should probably spend some more time looking into this....

Going into the weekend, the 8-4 Mariners had the lowest bullpen ERA in the American League (2.56), and the starters haven’t been too shabby either. Lefty Erik Bedard is fully healthy after a 2008 season shortened by a shoulder ailment, and he has worked three quality starts and allowed just four earned runs. He has a 1.86 ERA and has recorded just three walks and 23 strikeouts in 19.1 innings, though he lost a 2-0 decision to the Tigers on Saturday night. Another lefty, Jarrod Washburn, is 3-0 with ... The bullpenThe Mariners entered into the season with no sure thing at closer, not one left-hander in the bullpen, and a seven-man cast of characters who spent much of spring training searching for not only identity but also searching for jobs.

Manager Don Wakamatsu is confident the relievers will perform better outside the dry, warm conditions of Arizona, but he also knows a group this young may struggle, especially early.

"There's a high ceiling with these guys," Wakamatsu ... Read More

SEA: LHP Jarrod Washburn (2-0, 1.29 ERA)
The veteran left-hander retired the first 12 batters he faced in his previous outing on Wednesday, extending his scoreless streak to 12 innings to start the season. Both streaks ended during a two-batter sequence in the fifth, when a single and a home run put a dent in his first home outing of the season. Even so, he took the game through six innings on 87 pitches. TB: RHP Andy Sonnanstine (0-1, 6.52 ERA)
