Here's the deal -- I love playing sports games and making progress through my seasons like everyone else.
However, as the number that indicates my age continues to rise, I'm finding the time I can dedicate to gaming as a hobby (and not job) has dwindled significantly as responsibilities elsewhere rise.
The thought of playing a full 162 game season in MLB: The Show is a laughable proposition for me, ... Read More

It's here. With the XBox One now also in stores, if you were making a next-gen gaming decision you now likely have your console and have played some of your favorite sports games on the new consoles.
My start with the PS4 was delayed due to prior travel commitments, but I've spent the better part of the last 30 hours or so playing Madden, FIFA, and NBA 2K. Here is what I've observed.

Lebron James isn't happy with you.
There's a lot of things about Halloween that people celebrate. Ridiculous costumes, trick-or-treating, scary movies -- you name it and people tend to have some fun with this holiday.
I'm going to join in on the fun with the four 'scariest' digital athletes on video game consoles today. These are guys you simply don't want to have to play, especially if a human is

NBA 2K14 Next-Gen
It is a new generation, which means it is a chance to start some things new and to really give us a chance to change in many key areas.
One of the things we've always done at OS is review the newest, latest, and greatest (or not so much so) sports games.
The past couple of years, I have put in a lot of time making sure our scoring scale got into a good rhythm with some consistency ... Read More

FINALLY! We have some real moving and shaking going on with next-gen info being released in abundance.
Just this week we've hard from NBA 2K14, NBA Live 14, and Madden. We know Need for Speed won't be much longer, and FIFA has to be about ready to start diving into information.
You are here for the rankings, so here's my top buys of the console launch and launch window -- the criteria for being included ... Read More

Madden NFL 25 Next-Gen
Trying to be positive and excited about next-gen is hard work these days.
It is not because we have to around here, more like we really want to be positive. Excited. Anxious.
What I'd really like to be doing right now is pacing to the calendar to make sure it's still today and not November 15 and then back again. There probably should be a trail worn out on my carpet at ... Read More

NBA 2K14 on PlayStation 4.
Prettier. Shinier. But, better?
We are now exactly one month away from the new generation of sports games making their ways into our living rooms, and honestly if it weren't for getting reimbursed for my console purchase -- I'd have a hard time justifying a purchase at this point.
I'm far from poor mind you, it's more of value and return on investment proposition. We

In a relatively (and by that I mean totally) unscientific poll, the average OS visitor would need some type of precondition to be met before they would buy an unlicensed college football game.
In that poll we published Friday for voting, only 30% of OS'ers (as of this writing and before any contamination) say they would actually buy an unlicensed college game no questions asked. Another roughly 36% are open to the ... Read More

I was so excited.
All good love stories have to start somewhere. Mine started in the summer of 1998, just before the college football season kicked off -- that day my parents brought home to me a game called NCAA Football 99.
It was after receiving that game that I found a message board community about the game, people passionately talking about how to run the option and how to scheme offenses. In a ... Read More

Somewhere, someday, someone is going to have a backcourt with Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson with Wilt Chamberlin and Lebron James in their frontcourt.
I, of course, am talking about the day in the future when Basketball Ultimate Team becomes reality.
It's coming, you and I both know it is. While we have heard nothing concrete to suggest Ultimate Team will or won't be included in NBA Live 14, the ... Read More

NBA Live 14.
Last month, I ranked the next-gen sports games based upon what we've heard and what we are expecting coming up in November.
These rankings reflect my own personal expectations for which games are going to be the must own titles on next-gen. I am in the same position as most of you, the only claim to fame I have is that I've done this once before back at the 360/PS3 launch so many years ago. Thus, this ... Read More

UPDATE: EA has now (finally) confirmed NBA Live 14 is coming out on November 19 for both consoles. So after launch for PS4 and pre-launch for Xbox One.
Before I start the rest of this blog, let me preface it as any six year old would. EA Sports started it, with this tweet in particular:
The wording within that tweet by EA ... Read More

When I fired up NHL 14, I was greeted with a screen I found all too lovely, I was asked by a sports gaming product "What type of gameplay do you prefer?"
To me, this is the type of thing which should simply be a standard in our genre. Being able to customize your game towards an experience which is enjoyable for you should be a hallmark of great sports game design.
Why shouldn't sliders ... Read More

Reaction to the current-gen version of Madden has been somewhat all over the place thus far.
Myself and Dustin Toms (associate editor here at OS) were in agreement about how this year's game was likely to be polarizing with some loving it and others hating it -- it was literally the perfect storm.
The poll linked above, and as of this writing, is a pretty balanced poll -- and likely indicates overall ... Read More

Grading out the toughest schedules in the NFL is a key component in determining which teams are contenders and pretenders in the upcoming season as teams with easier schedules have a better chance to rack up wins throughout the season.
Using Madden NFL 25's team overall ratings, I averaged out each team's schedule and ranked them by the schedules average opponent rating. Perhaps the most noticeable component of the ... Read More
