What happens when you try to accurately simulate a sport with a complex array of moves and actions?

You get a convoluted mess of controls that'll frustrate even the most seasoned gamer like in UFC Undisputed 2010. While UFC diehards and stick seasoned gamers will likely enjoy the vast array of complex moves available, everyone else will end up in a game that is a little difficult to control. We'll come back to the negatives. ... Read More

I'll just be frank since it's late and writing this in the morning would make me the slowest person to react to this -- instead of next to slowest: the decision doesn't mean much at all at this point.

Nothing has been decided except the NFL can't use the single entity defense in the American Needle case. So for right now, gamers have no reason to celebrate since nothing has been decided as to how licenses ... Read More

Since I've last had a regular blog on OS (aka before I took most of this past month off to pursue a few other projects) there has been a lot of things happen in the sports gaming world which can be best described as big ticket items.

-Most recently the Backbreaker demo was released and the game actually didn't suck. Given all of the flak I've given the game, my demo review tried to make up for some of that. However, I definitely want to say it again, give those guys a sequel to improve ... Read More

I almost feel bad for having skepticism about Backbreaker...almost.

After a few games, I can honestly say I think Backbreaker will forever change how we look at sports games, even though the game itself is going to make me have one of the worst love/hate relationships I have had in quite some time.

From my time with the demo, Backbreaker can be summed up as one part Tecmo Bowl, one part ... Read More

Many of you know I am a strong supporter of mobile gaming, especially on Apple's App platform since it's just so darned big. As it turns out, I'm not the only one who loves the App Store. Developers from Eidos and Championship Manager to EA and their most popular titles FIFA, Madden and NBA Live have jumped aboard the bandwagon.

Now Out of the Park Developments is jumping on board.

Markus Heinsohn, possibly my favorite game developer out there, chimed in about the upcoming ... Read More

This is Tecmo Bowl.

In literally every sense, this is Tecmo Bowl. If the game had the real players and teams from it's inagural season, I could've swore this was the same game. And while in gaming, that's usually considered a bad thing, in this instance, it's mostly good.

Sometimes a new coat of paint is all a game really needed.

When I played a game with Kansas City against Buffalo, ... Read More

I can't help but feel we are due for a pretty special year in Sports Gaming. Here are approximately three reasons (I counted them last night and it came to 3 at least) why sports gaming could be simply awesome the rest of this year:
  1. Top Flight Titles are Coming into their Own -- Say what you will about any of the top flight titles out there right now such as Madden, NBA 2K or MLB: The Show. You can say how some might be getting stale and how others haven't realized their full potential

I've got a bit of time to recap what we learned in the Backbreaker conference call with Rob Donald. I'll post a short paragraph at the end with my opinion:
  • Seemingly unlimited creation options. You can use your created teams locally if they have real players or are real teams, but you cannot use real teams or players online.
  • Season mode features several different number of team options and all of those teams

While perusing the Operation Sports forums yesterday, I came across a thread made by OS'er akula who was frustrated as could be with how online quitters aren't punished properly in online games. Being a man of the people, I decided to give akula what he wanted and to highlight an issue I've seen OS'ers bring up throughout the forums time and time again: online quitters and how to deal with them.

The problem is simple here: a lot of people decide to talk a big game before playing and ... Read More

I've been reading on some initial reactions to NCAA Football 11 and the gameplay video and whatnot over the past couple of hours. It seems as if there is a sizeable sect of people who are unimpressed with the product, and while I understand that sentiment, I also think it's because of unrealistic expectations at this point. In all honesty, I highly doubt any of the yearly titles are able to have you watch their initial video ... Read More

I can't shake this bad feeling about Backbreaker. I really want the game to be something special to give gamers at least somewhat of a choice when it comes to their football games. But I just can't shake the bad feeling I have about the game.

I've watched every video, I've gobbled up all of the info that has been coming out -- but I can't help but think I've seen this whole thing before.

There was

The emergence of mobile gaming into the spotlight has been one of the top trends of the past couple of years. While cell phone gaming was always fairly simple and rather dull prior to the App store's launch on iTunes, it has been anything but since the store's launch in June of 2008. When you combine an easy to access store with an established user base of over 25 million people, you end up with a verifiable commercial success. Here ... Read More

I think it's finally happened for me.

Out of the Park Baseball 11 is by far my favorite baseball game this year, not an easy feat for a guy who has loved playing the actual games since Ken Griffey Jr. Baseball on the SNES. But I just can't help it, OOTP 11 is like an addictive drug mixed with your own personal theme park. I can't get enough of it, and it's very possible I might be ready to crown this year's game of the year already.

What is really scary is that while I ... Read More

As many of you may know, I'm a huge NCAA Football (the sport) fan. Likewise, one of the games in our genre I take the biggest interest in is EA Sports' NCAA Football simply because I live in the heart of College Football country. I want to see the game succeed, and I likewise spend a bit more time than most on the game in the offseason than most would.

I was chatting with a friend today about NCAA Football's online dynasty and the improvements made to Bowl Week. While he praised the ... Read More

I just wanted to send along a note from the guys at OOTP Developments that Out of the Park Baseball is coming to a PC near you in the very near future! Also there is an important note on pre-orders I think everyone should be made aware of!

Quote:
Additionally, we've had a slight change in plans regarding the preorder. We've gotten a lot of feedback from customers who want to support small software development by paying the full price for the game, but who also want to be able to download
