It's finally happening.

The Dark Ages of sports gaming are coming to an end.

NCAA Football has gone from a game stuck in a weird spot of not horrible quality but sideways movements from year to year to a game which took a monumental leap forward in a single year. Even more importantly, I think we might be on the cusp of a new renaissance in sports gaming.

Soccer gamers have a great title. Basketball gamers have two solid titles, both of which are set to take ... Read More

I've always been a numbers guy, which is probably why I love sports so much. Numbers are meaningful because they rarely lie. You can cut through rhetoric and emotion and get at the root of the issue in a hurry with numbers.

When it comes to a company defining success with a game, the characteristics with this generation have been to 1)Sell Well and 2)Produce games which are received well critically. Most companies use Metacritic for #2 and have their own access to sales numbers for ... Read More

WOW!

That was my first impression after looking through the writing applications this time around. Outside of the one's that were just bad (misspelled words, bad grammar, and leaving things out), we had some extremely quality people apply to become writers here at Operation Sports this time around.

All in all, we had just over 100 applicants apply and our team has managed to cut down that number to 10 -- but we weren't able to cut it any further. Those ten were all so good ... Read More

It finally happened -- sports gaming has jumped into the present day where anything is fair game for advertising.

Enter Madden's swagger rating.

Supposedly, the rating does nothing more than determine a player's likelihood to celebrate on the field. It doesn't progress and it doesn't effect gameplay in any other manner. Oh and the rating is brought to you by Old Spice.

So is this is a positive trend for sports gaming, where even ratings are fair game for advertising ... Read More

I'm not sure who you can blame for what I'm calling the "Generation of Diminished Expectations."

Do we blame corporations for not investing enough time into developing sports games which were able to leap well beyond what the previous generation gave us? Do we blame developers for squandering the resources they have? Or what about us? Do we blame ourselves for dismissing the reality of the situation and while we got our hopes up for a bunch of games resembling Ferraris, we got Chevy ... Read More

Draft day has arrived in the NBA.

And it's another painful reminder about how off-seasons in sports games are just plain boring.

While teams have been wheeling and dealing, trying to figure out how to maximize their positions on draft boards many sports gamers have been going through a plodding set of menus with basic A + B = C functionality being given to them. Many of you who have read my blog through the years (and I thank you for sticking with me for so long) recall ... Read More

E3 is in the past, and like most of you, I've only got to read the impressions coming out of the event. However, there are some big winners and big losers coming out of the event in my opinion, here's a quick rundown of which games used the event to improve their standing...presented in a classic stock guide.

NBA Elite 11: It seems a lot of buzz was generated by Elite 11, although no one can seem to come to a good consensus on what the new gameplay mechanics ... Read More

I'm back from vacation, look for a little deluge of blogs over the next few days as I try to catch up on everything. First things first though: I've got to lay down some impressions of the NCAA Football 11 Demo.

My first impression of the game is that it looks just so much better this year. From the lighting, to improved animations, to the presentation -- EA has just done a superb job adding a nice coat of polish ... Read More

It's time for me to finally take an actual vacation, although I'm sure I'll still manage to find some time to blog -- I'm a workaholic after all. However, as we head into the heart of sports gaming season, here are some of the storylines I'm particularly following closely:
  • There is going to be some additional updates on the NCAA Athlete Lawsuits really any day now. As soon as we find out what the next step is on those cases, I'm sure you'll be some of the first to know about it.
  • The

In case you missed it, Online Dynasty is going fully online with most of it's features.

Recruiting in your web browser? Done. Scheduling? Yep. Dynasty Reports? That too.

I'm giving the NCAA 11 team early credit for moving forward with their title after a rather melancholy year with NCAA Football 10. Along with the tweaks already mentioned within dynasty mode, this is a welcome addition and will be ... Read More

Sometimes, you don't need to be truly great to change an industry. In Backbreaker's case, the game is below average through and through. However, despite the game's overall lack of quality, it is going to leave a lasting legacy on sports gaming which I think you'll see games filter into their designs in the coming years.

Lesson #1: Trying to really simulate a sport really begins and ends with trying to simulate ... Read More

NBA Elite 11 was supposed to be big news.

Then Michael Jordan, the unquestioned greatest basketball player ever, was going to appear on NBA 2K11's cover.

A poll of OSers shows that you guys think the MJ cover is by far the bigger news, and it's no surprise. So even when EA tried to rock the sports gaming universe with their NBA Elite announcement, they were still overshadowed by Take Two's NBA behemoth.

So what does NBA Elite 11 have to do to win the ... Read More

What do you do when your product cannot sell as well as your competitors because your product has a bad reputation as being a piece of junk historically -- even though your product is actually becoming kind of good?

You change the name of course!

This is a move I didn't think EA would make, mainly because I didn't figure things were this bad. But in the era of prolonged economic stagnation, growth in ... Read More

Pros

Tackling/Player Interactions - The game never 'feels' stale in the sense that each play often brings about some new looking outcome of a play.

Tackle Alley - I LOVE this mini game. If the developers were wise, they'd package this mode as a $10 DLC or something.

Control Scheme - The controls are simple, and they are effective. Probably my favorite part of the game.

Sports gaming has found itself at a crossroads.

To be or not to be, that is the ultimate question.

And of course, we are talking about control schemes. And the question is whether control schemes should continue to grow more complicated or should they go back to an oft-longed for period of gaming where controls were so simple even your 66 year old grandma ... Read More
