Good news my fellow OSers, Smackdown vs. Raw 2011 is the best wrestling game of this generation.

But it's not like that's unexpected.

So instead of touting this game as the latest and greatest -- because it really is -- we need to instead decide whether this game is worthy of an upgrade and/or purchase for would be customers.

First off, the new WWE Universe mode is a good start to something ... Read More

If you believe 1Up, NBA Elite is now the responsibility of Tiburon Studios -- the same stuido responsible for EA Football, MMA, and Tiger Woods. While we have no confirmation, and thus, everything that follows is pure speculation -- here is what a move to Tiburon means for the series:

  • NBA Elite 11 would be effectively dead. No way you release the game now with it changing studios, not that I thought it was going to be released anyways, but this would effectively end all debate

Shocking news just in: EA Sports' latest game, based upon a niche sport's niche associations, isn't selling well.

I'll give you a moment to get your jaw off the floor.

Because let's face it, you didn't see that one coming. It's like EA developed an NCAA Hockey game and is now shocked to see it selling poorly.

Or was that NCAA Baseball?

Nonetheless, the enigma of EA Sports ... Read More

It's very possible people have already jumped to conclusions.

"Of course EA didn't make a mistake delaying Elite 11 Chris."

And you know what, I agree with you. I think it was the right move.

However, let's apply some logic and rationale to this debate with a couple tidbits of info and try to piece together just what the future of basketball gaming means.

Let's look at what we know right now:

  • EA is going to lose big, at least this

The folks at 2K Sports are probably popping the champagne right now and partying like it's 1999 all over again.

As they should be.

Not only has the 2K Basketball team completed a masterpiece of a game, they've also managed to create perhaps the best sports game not only of this generation, but of all time. Time will tell whether that is a title NBA 2K11 can hold or not, but I can guarantee the game ... Read More

What a difference a week makes.

Last week, I was using this space to trash an EA Sports game. This week, I'm going to use this space to praise a noteworthy first effort by the team behind EA Sports MMA.

The game is relatively simple, and in many cases it sacrifices realism for playability and fun. But other than the most extreme MMA fan, I don't think those compromises will be noticed by many.

It all started here on OS.

One could argue the revolution began on this very blog space, but let's be honest: it wasn't just me. It was the videos by the basketball faithful on YouTube, including the viral 500k Elite Jesus video. It was the outcry on various forums.

It was the consumer with a voice louder and clearer than it's ever been.

"This product is crap, and we demand something better." ... Read More

If you didn't read my thoughts on NBA Elite 11's demo, be sure to check those out now. No need to re-hash what I said there.

What I'd like to do instead is to play some blame game as to who is to blame for what might be one of the biggest disaster releases from a major gaming company in quite some time.

Because somehow, somewhere, someone is to blame for what accounts to the worst basketball title on the market in this generation of consoles. Sony's NBA game outclasses ... Read More

Wow.

I'm not sure what to say about NBA Elite 11, and that speechlessness doesn't have to do with the game being great.

I've spent the afternoon playing the demo some, thinking what I was playing was an aberration, but at this point it's becoming very clear: NBA Elite 11 is a resounding and very clear step backwards from NBA Live 10.

Name an area of the game, and it feels like it has taken ... Read More

And now for NBA 2K11. We don't get MJ in the demo, but I'm ok with that. Let's just assess where the gameplay stands this year. Just an FYI, the Demo is rather weak in terms of features, but we're after trying to figure out where the game is going to be in a few weeks.

NBA 2K11 Demo Impressions

  • As with FIFA, this game is both responsive and smooth.
  • Controls for specific moves are a bonafide

The FIFA 11 Demo first up today for me, my NBA 2K11 thoughts are coming very shortly as well. I enjoyed the crap out of FIFA 10, it was my favorite sports game and actually got my Sports GOTY vote last year. So does FIFA 11 improve and keep my attention as a casual soccer fan?

FIFA 11 Demo Impressions

  • Refinement, refinement, refinement. EA Canada started this trend with NHL 11 and might've perfected

If you haven't been around the OS Forums -- and other community forums for that matter -- there is a wave of discontent which has been around both NCAA Football and Madden for several years now.

I think some of the hate is definitely unjustified, but I also think there is a clear reason why both games are garnering so much negative attention these days: the games are stale.

I know it's not that ... Read More

2K's decision was strange, risky, even bold.

2K decided to shelve it's hockey series for a year to reinvent it -- at least according to the rumors coming from high placed sources. Of course, those high placed sources happen to be a source, which happens to be the CEO, but who's counting?

But while I'm sure serious work is being done on NHL 2K12, I can't help but feel the decision is going to end up being the equivalent of a cancellation, even if it takes a while to play ... Read More

I'm typically not one to call a game dead in the water a full month before release, and I'm going to try my best not to through the next 300 words or so -- although you could argue I just did.

Back in June, I wrote an article about the move to Elite was a last-ditch desperate attempt by EA to spur sales in the face of an opponent which was beating EA down at every corner.

Because, when you have a highly recognized ... Read More

I just wanted to point out a poll I posted yesterday on OS, and the results garnered from it. I think it's a very interesting phenomenon we might have just stumbled across.

The poll question, "Has the ability to create patches hurt initial game quality?"

Unless you are a very young gamer, you may very well remember the day where console games were not patchable. In fact, there was a time when what you saw was what you got. So in a lot of ways, creating a game on a console ... Read More
