Four Things NBA 2K13 Must Do To Dominate Stuck
Posted on July 31, 2012 at 11:27 AM.

Last week I wrote about how NBA Live's promoters have gone silent. There's not a peep coming out of EA's HQ -- which may be for the game's best for now.

However, for 2K Sports, this is another big season for their flagship title with some key questions hanging over it's head. After a season marred with unrealistic expectations from consumers and a few key gaffes, NBA 2K13 is looking to meet a more realistic set of expectations this season. Here are four things I'm personally looking for from 2K this season:

  1. Online Play that actually works. The server problems with the 2K series reached a crescendo last season, and I honestly can't think of many other major release games that simply do not work when they launch in their online modes. This has to change this year, it's the one glaring hole that 2K has left open for EA to potentially grab a small but sizeable portion of the basketball gaming audience. Making online play a working and smooth endeavor would put the series instantly on long-term solid ground.
  2. A control scheme that doesn't take a NASA scientist to figure out. I love the depth of NBA 2K, I really do...but the control scheme has gotten to the point that it's darned near impossible to play the game with any skill whatsoever without spending hours upon hours learning the controls. I have a solution to the problem, and that's two different control sets -- one for the hardcore people who don't mind the added learning curve and one for the more ****** folks who simply want to play basketball like the big guys without too much hassle. Seems simple enough right?
  3. Another step up on the presentation front. I'd truly like to see an even more refined presentation from the 2K series. It's probably the best Presentation in sports games right now, but it can always be better. I don't want to see a lax approach to this, I want to see real and positive momentum.
  4. Refine the actual basketball a bit. As the detail goes up either via hardware or software, consumers will find more and more to nitpick about. We're getting to that point with NBA 2K. However, I'd like to see a lot of the little things that need refining and tuning to be given just that treatment. At times, 2K just doesn't play as smooth as it should -- but I'd expect for a step generally in the right direction once again this season. It felt like last year's game swam sideways a bit, which was probably the big issue with most gamers. I don't think we'd see a repeat of that this year with Live also hitting store shelves.
So what about you? What are your keys for success for the 2K Basketball series this year?

I think that the controls are fine. It makes the user actually have to put some effort into the game and be skilled at it. This isn't NBA Jams or Double Dribble. I agree with all of them except for the controls. The controls help bring out the realism in the game.

I would like to see the dirbbling ability differ as they do in real life. In 2k12 all guards and SF had handles like CP3. I like it the way that it was in 2k10 where people would fall or loose the ball if they attempted moves that was out of their ability. The alley oops needs to be repaired. People attempt this pass as a cheese factor just to get a bucket. The receiving player jumps with no awareness of their own safety.

I shouldn't have to learn all new controls every year to pull off the same moves. If you want to know how wack 2k's controls are all you have to do is look what they did with the dribble stick.

It;s unusable now. I think it was 2k11 that they completely ruined the dribble stick when they removed the feature where if you held down the left trigger it would turn into a shot stick.

That is no longer anywhere to be found.

I've played every 2k sine the first. To me the best control scheme was 2k8 and was the last time I felt completely in control of my man along with having the ability to shake you in real time.

Now every thing is pause. Let you slide then I make a move.

I wish things were otherwise.

I definitely agree with all points but i disagree a bit with number 2 and a combo of 3 & 4 from a different angle.

1. The control depth separates those who play the game ******ly and those who take the time to study the game. I compare it to what Capcom did with MvC3...for those who were true to the series and studied the control, it was rewarding! But then when they threw in the SIMPLE option, all skill went out the window and with one button, users were chaining 10 hit combos right out the box! Inbalance!

2. Presentation and feel to me is what 2k has been extremely lazy on! You want consumers to continually spend money on your product but then you can't guarantee us support for the game?!?!?!? How hard is it to port a cyberface? The modding community has been favored highly in the last 2 years because of 2k's lack. When i buy 2k and then throughout the entire year receive about 20 roster updates, and then at the end of the year I'm still looking at Blake Griffin and Nick Young with a fade cut?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!? That's ridiculous! Both of those players had the curl and fro in the middle of 2k11's tenure...no excuses! No more promises! Just as Stephen A. Smith said about the Miami Heat all year, "We know what you can do, we know your skill level, we know your track record...now stop the folly and GET IT DONE!"

Fix the dribbling for the love of god. The moves are too slow to fool anyone, especially the CPU, and it is stupid in my opinion to have the same control stick for both the dribbling and standard movement. Just steal the right stick control from Live, pretty simple. I don't play much online, but obviously 2k has its shortcomings there as well.

Im buying 2k regardless.... BUT, it would be nice to see them make online association better...(give admins some control).... Bring back crew mode.... And make sure that online actually works.... Now I'm done...

The four that you had listed I truly agree with. I hope online leagues are more functional, for instance giving Commissioners the opportunity to advance the league rather than time expiring.

2K does not "NEED" to do anything to dominate. They have done that for over a decade without the opinions of a bunch of random bloggers.

i hope they also include co-op game against the console or pc like 2on2 or 3on3 where you and your buddy can have a game against the AI.And i hope the have also a 3on3 online game. i think its really fun to have a ball game that 2 of your friends against 3 other online players. just like 3on3.

I completely agree with no. 1, the online play. I been going hard on Live since '95. I just flipped to 2K two years ago because of how great the game is. But, I can never get a ranked game!!!! I was excited to hear NBA Live was coming back a few months ago, now that's dead! If 2K don't fix those servers this year im not even gonna cop. Madden and COD would just have to get me by.

My crew needs to come back . My Player needs more . Presentation needs to be touched up . . . MORE CELEBRATIONS , MORE CROWD REACTION , MORE TEAM REACTION

I agree with a ton of points so I will echo the ones I agree with here and get maybe a couple new ones in ***SPOILERS*** (When you get to the MyPlayer Section... theres somethings I reveal that you might not know so if your into it... read at your own risk.. just saying just incase

1) Online needs to work. You guys should now have workable servers especially with no Competition on the Basketball front. It's really bad when I am buying a game knowing the online wont work. (I bought 2k12 just for my player....that's it)

2) My Crew needs to be back in the game. We work hard to get these players through their careers and it would be nice to be able to team up with friends as a MyPlayer team (please...no DLC for this or I will lose it... if i have to pay for something that was free... like we did in 2k12.... I will lose it....)

3) Improve Online Franchise Mode: (Online Franchise needs to be a "Flex Schedule" if possible. That Auto-Advance feature was extremely annoying because everyone in our leagues had a life and we had trouble planning games around that horrid advance clock lol.) But for the most part everything else worked. so just improve it somewhat and maybe take that clock thing out lol.

4) MyPlayer Mode needs more improvements. Ok, simply put. I love this mode. I love the whole RPG aspect of this mode. But even though 2k12 is a VAST improvement over 2k11's myplayer, it still feels incomplete.
Things I would like to see added:

- If your a Prominent Player in the League you should have some say if the team needs to make a trade, you guys did this for 2k11, which i liked it, it didn't need to be removed, but maybe tweaked. (IE: Not actually pull the trigger on a trade, but tell the team. hey....please make move "source: Dwight Howard" lol)

-There should be a REAL off-season. After winning the title in my first year...to my surprise.... I am instantly starting Season 2..... what?!?!?! where is the off-season??.... maybe put some exit interviews in with the coaching staff? ask us what we think of the roster? if it needs improvements? Maybe give us some off season training drills? Or even better. Give us a chance to help "recruit" free agents. (Example: Kobe and Nash spoke this off-season helped Nash join the Lakers. Example 2: Kobe talked to Dwight... Dwight subsequently didnt want to play in LA.... Lmao do something like this!!! it Would be fun....it goes without saying....it should also be challenging cause you don't want every big name player in one place!)

-More In season interaction with the Coaching Staff/GM (Take a look at MLB: The Show series. If you have a problem with anything, you can speak to the Manager and tell him your problems/thoughts very good feature.)

-More Detailed Contract negotiations: When you finally finish your rookie contract. The interface to sign your new contract is extremely shallow. The system needs more work. You have almost no Input on how much you will make, it is almost one sided. (I'm not saying it has to be as detailed as the NBA draft interview process which is awesome, and if it was like that it would be a bonus....I'm just saying the process in general needs to be deeper.) Signing a new contract for the first time is a HUGE deal in any NBA players life...it should be a bigger deal in the game.

-Interaction with players on your team during the season off the court. (This doesn't have to be super deep. It can be text based dialogue. For example: If a team mate is having an issue with the front office or coaching staff you can try to talk them out of it so their ratings doesn't go down, or conversely, you can make things worse by trying to talk them out of it and make their ratings go down even more than they were!)

One Final Note: I'm not saying 2k Has to put all these suggestions of mine into the game this year, because they have a lot to work on. I am just putting these idea's out there in hopes that maybe 1 or 2 of the idea's is a good one and maybe it will make it into the game. Sorry for being so long winded.... (probably should have cooled off a bit on my player mode... lol)
