Four Things NBA 2K13 Must Do To Dominate Stuck
Posted on July 31, 2012 at 11:27 AM.

Last week I wrote about how NBA Live's promoters have gone silent. There's not a peep coming out of EA's HQ -- which may be for the game's best for now.

However, for 2K Sports, this is another big season for their flagship title with some key questions hanging over it's head. After a season marred with unrealistic expectations from consumers and a few key gaffes, NBA 2K13 is looking to meet a more realistic set of expectations this season. Here are four things I'm personally looking for from 2K this season:

  1. Online Play that actually works. The server problems with the 2K series reached a crescendo last season, and I honestly can't think of many other major release games that simply do not work when they launch in their online modes. This has to change this year, it's the one glaring hole that 2K has left open for EA to potentially grab a small but sizeable portion of the basketball gaming audience. Making online play a working and smooth endeavor would put the series instantly on long-term solid ground.
  2. A control scheme that doesn't take a NASA scientist to figure out. I love the depth of NBA 2K, I really do...but the control scheme has gotten to the point that it's darned near impossible to play the game with any skill whatsoever without spending hours upon hours learning the controls. I have a solution to the problem, and that's two different control sets -- one for the hardcore people who don't mind the added learning curve and one for the more ****** folks who simply want to play basketball like the big guys without too much hassle. Seems simple enough right?
  3. Another step up on the presentation front. I'd truly like to see an even more refined presentation from the 2K series. It's probably the best Presentation in sports games right now, but it can always be better. I don't want to see a lax approach to this, I want to see real and positive momentum.
  4. Refine the actual basketball a bit. As the detail goes up either via hardware or software, consumers will find more and more to nitpick about. We're getting to that point with NBA 2K. However, I'd like to see a lot of the little things that need refining and tuning to be given just that treatment. At times, 2K just doesn't play as smooth as it should -- but I'd expect for a step generally in the right direction once again this season. It felt like last year's game swam sideways a bit, which was probably the big issue with most gamers. I don't think we'd see a repeat of that this year with Live also hitting store shelves.
So what about you? What are your keys for success for the 2K Basketball series this year?

maybe im mistaken, but since like 2k9 hasnt there been a simple control scheme that allowed for crossovers and spins at the touch of a button?

I was wondering where the trolls would arrive!

NBA Live 13 is DEAD! It was not mention anywhere in EA's investor meetings on July 16 and July 31 while all of the other upcoming EA's titles were even Dead Space 3 and Crysis 3: http://investor.ea.com/ .

Plus, Live 13 is no where to be found at EA's store Origins, Season Ticket, and Coming Soon page. Amazon, Gamstop, IGN, Gameinformer all changed there release date to TBA/unknown. NBA Live is again CANCELLED.

I'd love NBA 2K to adopt something similar to what NHL 13 is doing with GM Connected. Having user GM's who can trade actual user controlled players in the NBA? That would be pretty cool.

I think 1 of the things that needs to play a part especially dur to the fact the Live is returning is player authenticity. All and I mean all superstars and stars should be pretty much spot on. If you showed me chris paul, ray allen, dwayne wade etc on 2k without their jerseys I couldn't tell you who they were for the most part. Lets get the faces to an pc gaming height. Also refering to player authenticity the different body types. Its time for 2k to step their game up in this department. You almost cant watch a thunder game without them mentioning the length of Durant or a celtics game and the long arms of rondo. Its time to really differentiate the differences of these players. Some lack muscle tone like paul pierce some physical specimens like D Howard or Lebron. If you change the body types more it would immerse us even deeper in this great nba world that 2k has created

I think there's some intuituve things they can ad, like the euro step being controllable instead of some predetermined thing that, for me, almost NEVER works the way it should. I think you should be able to hold down both triggers on the move and be able to pick up the ball entirely. From there you can do a moving fake pass, jump up and either do a floater or pass it again, or do the EURO. One step, flick the stick another way and he can go around a player. And if you mess up you'll either travel or go straight into a defender for the charge.

Would be so friggin' sweet.

Adv. passing controls!! Different types of passes would be nice

Yeah I don't agree with #2 as a few of the other users in here.

For those users who go in-depth and spend time working on figuring controls, how to do certain moves, etc. it would be pretty dumb to take it away. Pretty much how I see it, players like Kobe, LeBron, Durant, those who spend countless hours in the gym, getting better, working on their craft, they would represent the gamers who spend those hours in practice mode, learning controls, and it's rewarding. I've spent countless hours in practice mode working on my post game, and it shows when I'm in team-up, or playing one on one.

If you're a ****** user, you're just a ****** user. Marvel v. Capcom and games like that, you can tell the difference between a ****** user and a hardcore fan. I'm tired of video games and users saying they should think about the ****** gamers, games should be built for hardcore fans, Madden has been pleasing the ****** gamers since they've probably reached next-gen, look at how that's turned out.

I like the advanced passing controls idea, figure out a way to make that work realistically. That way were not having people throwing behind the back passes online every time down the court.

I disagree with all of this simply because they aren't gameplay related. 2k12 had so many gameplay issues. 1. AI- in general needs to be improved. 2. Realistic collision system. 3. Momentum-needs to be fixed and 4. Foot-planting- NEEDS SERIOUS ATTENTION. Imo that's what 2k13 needs to have.

They need to fix my player mode in several ways.

1. Not at one point does your player turn into "star" status inside your player card.
2. Give players the oppurnity to use their my players in online mods vs other players my players.
3. Fix the CPU , it seems unless your running a set play the CPU seems to stick to me like glue , if I have 99 speed , dribbling etc no way should a third string player be able too defend me so easily . At all points of the game.
4 stamina needs a overall , granted I love being able to hold the sprint button down all game but that's not realistic make my player tired faster for a overall better game .

what i'd like to see and its not gonna be popular but this is just my humble opinion. take my player and CREW away and just release those as a separate game (like an online download for a few bucks.) i think it takes away from what the sim experience is and doesnt help guys learn more about how to play basketball. its just for accolades, your own vanity... take that dev time away from those modes and add a simpler control scheme for novices. Just dont dumb it down for us guys who like spending time with game getting our stick skills up. I like taking my day off each year for a 2k day and learning the game. Its just my own thing. I'd like ball control to be improved.

I hate that elite pgs can lose the ball just because the collision detection on the ball handler is weird. I'd also like to see better post defense options. I love the pull the chair option but outside of that if you cant counter the post spin and bring help over in time. your basically beat. I personally just want the game to be as sim as possible like it used to feel when i started playing it in middle school back in 02-03. I felt like i really needed to watch more basketball and incorporate my knowledge of the game instead of running and gunning. It was satisfying to know that your playing the game the right way.
