Four Things NBA 2K13 Must Do To Dominate Stuck
Posted on July 31, 2012 at 11:27 AM.

Last week I wrote about how NBA Live's promoters have gone silent. There's not a peep coming out of EA's HQ -- which may be for the game's best for now.

However, for 2K Sports, this is another big season for their flagship title with some key questions hanging over it's head. After a season marred with unrealistic expectations from consumers and a few key gaffes, NBA 2K13 is looking to meet a more realistic set of expectations this season. Here are four things I'm personally looking for from 2K this season:

  1. Online Play that actually works. The server problems with the 2K series reached a crescendo last season, and I honestly can't think of many other major release games that simply do not work when they launch in their online modes. This has to change this year, it's the one glaring hole that 2K has left open for EA to potentially grab a small but sizeable portion of the basketball gaming audience. Making online play a working and smooth endeavor would put the series instantly on long-term solid ground.
  2. A control scheme that doesn't take a NASA scientist to figure out. I love the depth of NBA 2K, I really do...but the control scheme has gotten to the point that it's darned near impossible to play the game with any skill whatsoever without spending hours upon hours learning the controls. I have a solution to the problem, and that's two different control sets -- one for the hardcore people who don't mind the added learning curve and one for the more ****** folks who simply want to play basketball like the big guys without too much hassle. Seems simple enough right?
  3. Another step up on the presentation front. I'd truly like to see an even more refined presentation from the 2K series. It's probably the best Presentation in sports games right now, but it can always be better. I don't want to see a lax approach to this, I want to see real and positive momentum.
  4. Refine the actual basketball a bit. As the detail goes up either via hardware or software, consumers will find more and more to nitpick about. We're getting to that point with NBA 2K. However, I'd like to see a lot of the little things that need refining and tuning to be given just that treatment. At times, 2K just doesn't play as smooth as it should -- but I'd expect for a step generally in the right direction once again this season. It felt like last year's game swam sideways a bit, which was probably the big issue with most gamers. I don't think we'd see a repeat of that this year with Live also hitting store shelves.
So what about you? What are your keys for success for the 2K Basketball series this year?

1 agree with 1, 3, 4. But the controls is fine. Its adds a since of accomplishment once you get the moves down. It rewards skill. Those who really enjoy basketball appreciates the depth of the control scheme.

Interesting thread. You would figure that no matter what EA brings in the next few years if Live is even in the discussion of being the better game it will be as a result of Visual Concepts doing something wrong. Beside something that is really glitch heavy those are areas that could knock the game a few marks.

In a way I see the controls and the questionable advancement from 2k11's core gameplay as a conjoined issue. For example I prefer the defensive options in 2k12 yet the control of the defender makes onball defense more difficult than it was in 2k11. Another example is the on the fly controls. It was improved by adding camera and defensive keys yet pace settings were removed and defensive assignments. Subbing was far more cumbersome than something like CH2k8 when the on the fly subs felt like pure butter. Quick, easy and simple.

I wouldn't worry about the complexity of the controls. As long as you have intro modes and tutorials complexity wins out consistently in the sports genre.

-ALL I WANT 2K to do is icorporate the dynamic passing that was in
CH2k8.
There was nothing better in CH2k8 when youd run a fast break or hit a player cutting to the basket with a perfectly timed bounce pass.
-I like idea of a second control set for ******s. Just dont dumb down the control schemes.
-Again something Id like to see incorporated in an Associaton mode-something that would take the game to another level. would be to have players happiness tied into the number of touches or shots they get per game, not only minutes. A more in depth Association similar to a text based dynasty mode for hardcore sim ballers.
-Presentation is on point, but maybe more individual stat overlays during game play, especially during free throws.

Oh and they need to stop making promises they cant keep * cough * dynamic updates * cough *

I agree with presentation they absolutely need more dynamic camera angles and bring the arena to life a bit more.

+1 on simplifying the controls. NBA2K12 is a great game but I still can't do half of what you're able to because the controls are too complex (for me, anyway). There's great moves that you can do with your player but go into practice mode and try to figure out how to remember to do all of them. Last time I played EA's version I remember that it was a lot easier.

I want to see them:
Fix speed.
Make strength matter in the post.
New post up logic.
Better passing AI.
Reconfigure the clutch factor so it doesn't factor in the shot clock running low.

-I think thats what makes this game enjoyable. Its the learning curve. Based on my experience, no two people play completely alike. and that also ties into the sim aspect. Id hate to start playing a 2k game where everyone is basically, pulling off the same moves, witha pres of a button...that would be too EA like and woudl get boring quickly for us sim heads. Thats why a 2 chice control scheme makes perfect sense.
I like the fact that I cant pull off all these moves. It actaully forces me to play a more fundamnetal game of basketball

CREW...personally the presentation is fine. I don't know why people press so hard on it. Gameplay needs to improve along with servers.CREW!!!

Instead of going over all the changes again I will post ideas I had last year in a blog.

Fix online association. The stats dont work. Why do I have to be on my xbox to see a boxscore? What happend to the day of being able to follow a game in progress on the 2k lg forums? Bring back all of the league features. Fix the way the schedule works. Not being able to reset simmed games is a HUGE issue - especially when 2k's crappy servers leads to a bunch of simmed games.

*One more thing. Fix the momentum shots.. Pull ups and leaners are too high percentage.

Besides all the points you mentioned. I'd like to see them make some improvements to both online and offline association. When I'm online the association is hard to play with because it's so broken. And offline it's so boring I can barely bring myself to keep playing after one season. I think they need more interactive things in association. Like maybe a team press conference after games like in my player, or maybe some NBA TV updates during the season. Just anything to draw interest back.

Also they really need to do something about the canned animations. I go for a steal and my player leaps into the air and runs away from his man. That's something you learn NOT to do in high school.

Would love to see FIBA basketball in this year. 20th anniversary of the '92 Dream team, it makes sense to see it now. ESPECIALLY with all the hype between the players from that team and current USA players on who would win. It's been 2k's thing since MJ came: Kobe vs MJ.. That would be an awesome mode to jump in to. Also, much smoother collisions. Too many times do I want to Euro and end up getting connected with the defender. I had to change my sliders just to pull one off.

Can I get more reaching fouls I have guys on my back from when the ball is inbounded and during the course of the game he'll end up wit more behind the back steals than fouls and just make the game smarter 3 on 1 break I should score 90% of the time instead 2k12 I always turn the ball over unless I throw an alley simple fix!
