Product Placement in Games, has 2K Gone too Far? Stuck
Posted on February 14, 2009 at 12:09 PM.

What do you think about the above image? Has 2K gone too far with Pepsi products in MLB 2K9? Is this sort of thing a good or bad thing for sports gamers? And does it ruin the sense of realism?

My answers are, in order. Whoa, is that Pepsi One Ballpark? Yes, they have. It depends on how the developers implement it and yes, if it's done like above it will help ruin the sense of realism.

I'm all for companies using real life sponsors and making money off of them, but the above image is just obnoxiously bad.

What do you think?

That image is pretty bad because so much of it is Pepsi that it stands out. They should have signed more sponsors to help with the costs and not have it look so goofy. I don't have a problem with product placement in games for the most part though and am surprised more isn't done with it.

Here is a picture of Tropicana's advertising and so its not as though there isn't advertising in those spots - its just that they are so noticeable since its the same freaking logo.

I think this is pretty ridiculous. I'm all for real sponsors but they seriously need to tone that down. And they need to add more sponsors so it looks more realistic.

Having all those ads is very realistic. All of those ads being for the same company(Pepsi) is ridiculous and annoying to look at.

I am all for real adverts, and I even understand why they do it - $. But a little diversity would make it a bit more realistic and not look as horrible as it does -Maybe they did it on purpose so gamers would not notice how bad the game is... LOL - kidding. j/k....!!

I am for real ads being there...pepsi,coke,nike,whatever,this should give gaming companies more money? and if so then the game with more money, and dev time would be a better product for us gamers?...but to answer your question, its a little much....

I'd like to have real ads. I'd just rather it not be one ad repeated over and over!

Wow...that is pretty rediculous! I'm all for authentic, real ads, but try to, I dunno, space them out a bit better! It just looks like a jumbled mish-mash a pepsi ads. It almost like they used "The Ad Gun" (see: Homer Simpson's Make-up Gun)to make the stadium.

I think it adds a large splash of color to an otherwise lifeless venue.

it's a bad implementation of an advertising deal. It makes me wanna drink coke....

it may be overdone, but the stride long lasting drive of apf 2k8 made me buy stride when i was in line at the store solely because of product recognition.

I like ads cause its realistic. But not too many (or all) of the same company.

"I think it adds a large splash of color to an otherwise lifeless venue."

True, but even Triple Play 99 had fake ads. You can put any advertisements you want in there to add color and realism, but making them all the same color and for the same product is bad.

Unfortunately, making some ads real and some fake would not go over well for the company. So either they can make them all fake (MVP Baseball 2005 did this, I believe) or all real from their licensing partners (MLB 08: The Show), but if you're going to sell space to third parties, get some variety.

Ads are fine, but I want a discount on the price of the game if they appear.

Couldn't care less. I'm playing a game, not worrying about the advertising...

2K7 had a ads with Progressive, Majestic, etc., but it wasn't so over the top like 2K9 with alteration of stadiums for billboard advertising.

/are you in good hands?
