Product Placement in Games, has 2K Gone too Far? Stuck
Posted on February 14, 2009 at 12:09 PM.

What do you think about the above image? Has 2K gone too far with Pepsi products in MLB 2K9? Is this sort of thing a good or bad thing for sports gamers? And does it ruin the sense of realism?

My answers are, in order. Whoa, is that Pepsi One Ballpark? Yes, they have. It depends on how the developers implement it and yes, if it's done like above it will help ruin the sense of realism.

I'm all for companies using real life sponsors and making money off of them, but the above image is just obnoxiously bad.

What do you think?

I did a short blog on something like this before. It was talking about boxing in general, but it applies to all sports.

Why don't sports games use better and realistic advertisement?

I wonder why don't sports games deal with more advertisements of that sport. You have all these sports magazines, clothing appparel and equipment makers that could help on thier so called budget. Getting companies to advertise could give certain games an authentic look. Imagine having magazines like The Ring, Boxing Digest, etc; having your fighter in it. We would have more choices of brand name gear for boxers.......

Yes, the way the advertisement is done definitely needs to be toned down. It's not realistic.

I wonder if the Pepsi signs will be in Turner Field. I wont play any game that advertises rot gut Pepsi!

same as said before. I agree with real ads adding to the realism of the game and helping with the cost, however the overwhelming in your face of all Pepsi ads is a negative. It slams it in your face instead of being tasteful and subtle. I hope that this is toned down before the release of the game.

I don't think there is a such thing as too much advertising when it comes to sports, because realistically that is the normative. The problem with the above image is that there is one particular product that stands out more than others. Some solutions could be to either create fake advertisements to go along with the real ones in a video game if they only have a few; or they can try to get more sponsors.

That image is pretty bad. That's ridiculously excessive, so yes, I'll say 2K has gone too far. However, I do like real world ads in the games. It gives the game a more authentic feel. Just don't over do it. I hope 2K doesn't use this same tactic when it comes to their NBA game this year.

I said this in another post, but I think that publishers should take the creative route and add parody advertisements like the All-Star Baseball series did in order to save money they'd pay out to advertisers.

But at the same time, it makes me wonder...how much is State Farm and Pepsi paying 2K to put their ads in the game? Hmmmmmmm......

A. It looks ridiculous.
B. It breaks immersion.
C. It's in poor taste.

Maybe 2K should spend more time on their horrific gameplay and character models and less time worrying about cashing checks from PepsiCo.

There's over 300 screenshots on OS -- about 200 are menus, 100 are stadiums, and a dozen of doctored player models.

Similar discussion over on pastapadre. Someone there pointed out they're modifying stadiums to put more advertising in, or to increase it's size. That's when it crosses the line to me.

You must not have played Fight Night Round 3

I was looking at the stadium screenshots, and it's funny that at Comerica Park, they didn't include the giant neon Pepsi logo near Comerica's real-life "Pepsi Porch" when they obviously didn't forget to add Pepsi ads in every other park

I mulled over this a little more over the weekend while trying to get over a cold.

cmc2of3 hit it on the head, it appears they have modified the parks (at least some) to squeeze some more advertising in. That isn't a good sign if a company is sacrificing realism to try to squeeze out every possible dollar they can for an in-game advertising agreement. Other companies are definitely guilty of this, but I honestly believe 2K has fully crossed the line of being tasteful with advertising in MLB 2K9.

Personally, I think it's a great idea. The money received from Pepsi is used to pay developers to make a great game. State Farm is one of MLB's major sponsors and have a lot of commercials during games, not to mention sponsoring the home run derby last season if I'm not mistaken. Stadiums of every sport have ads plastered anywhere they can fit them and why not in a video game?

It doesn't bother me at all, I mean, I am a huge NHL 09 player, and if you ever played that game, there is a severe amount of product placement going on. Trust me, I am pretty sure subway and McDonald's usually don't advertise as much on the hockey rink in real life as they do in NHL 09. More power to them.
