We're only one week into the 2012 season and already we've seen two record-breaking performances. Lions RB Kevin Smith ran into the record books Sunday with his 322 rushing yard performance, breaking Adrian Peterson's record of 296 yards.
Denver fans were eagerly anticipating Peyton Manning's debut for the Broncos and he did not disappoint the Mile-High faithful as he tossed 7 touchdowns and threw for 427 yards in his first game back since missing all of 2011. He is now one of 8 QBs to throw for 7 TDs in a single-game.

Going into the regular season the Lions knew they could throw the ball with any team in the league, maybe now they can run the ball as well after Kevin Smith's record-breaking performance on Sunday. Smith ran for 322 yards on 30 carries as he sprinted past Adrian Peterson's old record of 296 yards. When asked about his amazing performance Smith had this to say, "Man I can't even come up with words to describe it, it just seemed the field was wide-open for me all game long", he also then went on to congratulate his o-linemen on a great performance.
While Smith stole the show he wasn't the only Lions weapon who displayed himself to the league. Calvin Johnson was uncoverable as he caught 8 passes for 169 yards and 2 TDs including a 47 yard bomb from Stafford where Johnson out-jumped triple-coverage to secure the touchdown. That play would prove to set the tone for the Lions as they rolled to a 44-22 win over St. Louis. The Lions now must get ready for their first road-test of the season as they face the 49ers next Sunday in primetime.

What started out looking like a blowout turned out to be another barn-burner for the Lions as they yet again gave up a huge lead. In the 1st quarter the Lions jumped out to a 10-0 lead after the hometown fans finally got to see Megatron score a touchdown in the preseason. Detroit would go into the break leading 24-3.
In the second half Vince Young brought the Bills back scoring 24 unanswered points to give Buffalo a 27-24 lead with a little over 3 minutes remaining. Rookie QB Kellen Moore showed why the Lions elected to hold on to the 3rd stringer as he led Detroit down the field connecting with Tyler Toliver on a 29 yard scoring strike to give the Lions a 31-27 victory. Detroit finishes the preseason at 3-1 as they enter the regular season. The Lions will open up at home against St. Louis next Sunday.

The Lions are now down to 53 players for the regular season as they prepare for their final preseason game vs. Buffalo tomorrow. Stefan Logan the kick-return specialist for the Lions the last two years was among those final cuts. Coach Fanko had this to say about his release, "Nate and Titus really played pretty well in the return game here in the preseason so we've decided to part ways with Stefan, I wish him luck where ever he goes".

Despite being out-gained 408-255 in yards the Lions were able to pick up a 24-16 victory much because of their stout red-zone defense that kept the Raiders out of the endzone. Oakland also was able to get into Lions territory three other times but Detroit only allowed 1 TD on the day, a 59 yard run by Darren McFadden.
The Lions starters on offense played a couple drives both punts as Matthew Stafford was sacked a couple times. One bright spot for the offense was the much-maligned running game which came alive, totaling 155 yards between Smith, Leshore, and Bell. Detroit has one more preseason game, at home next week vs. Buffalo, before they start the regular season at home against St. Louis.

Although the Lions were unable to hold on for a victory over the Ravens Friday night, they played like the better team. In the 1st quarter when both teams played their starters, Detroit dominated both on offense and defense. It looked like the Lions were poised to take an early lead on the first possession but a Kevin Smith fumble in the redzone led to a Ravens field goal. Stafford would answer though with a 61 yard TD pass to Nate Burleson to take the lead. On the Ravens first play of their next drive Joe Flacco threw it right into the hands of CB Don Coleman who took it to the house 29 yards for the score and a 14-3 lead. Detroit would take a 20-3 lead into the locker-room at the break.
In the second half both teams exchanged field goals to make it 23-6. Then back-up QB Tyrod Taylor got hot connecting on 8 of 9 passes including a 5 yard strike to Tommy Streeter to make it 23-13 going into the 4th. The Lions were unable to get anything going offensively in the 2nd half largely due to their 3 turnovers. On the ensuing Ravens drive rookie RB Bernard Pierce broke into open field for a 52 yard TD bringing the Ravens within 3. Rookie QB Kellen Moore had a chance to run out the clock for the Lions but he was unable to connect on a 3rd down pass that would have ended the game as the Ravens got the ball back with less than 2 minutes remaining. Taylor led Baltimore down the field and into field goal position but on the very next play Pierce broke open another huge run this one for 22 yards and a touchdown to give the Ravens a 27-23 lead. That score would prove to be the final score as Moore in desperation threw a interception on 4th down.
Coach Fanko when asked about his team's performance had this to say, "You never like to lose no matter if it's regular season or preseason but our starters played well and we got out of here without any injuries so I can't say I'm too disappointed". He also said that the Lions RB battle is still wide open after a much better effort from both Smith and Leshore but both suffered fumbles as well.

The running back depth chart just got a little lighter for the Lions as Coach Fanko cut Jerome Harrison and Keiland Williams. Many pundits believed that Harrison had an outside shot to win the starting job but he never impressed coaches during training camp. WR Lance Long and SS Ricardo Silva among others were cut as well as the Lions prepare for their next game in Baltimore.Other news around the league:
Seahawks cut WR Terrell Owens
Raiders sign TE Jeremy Shockey for 1 year/2.5 mil
Jaguars sign DE Andre Carter for 1 year/4.6 mil
Browns sign QB Donovan McNabb for 1 year/3.7 mil
Panthers sign MLB James Farrior for 1 year/4.2 mil
CB Marcus Trufant traded from Seahawks to Texans
RB Issac Redmen traded from Steelers to Panthers
Although the Lions were able to pull out a 34-27 win over the Browns, Coach Fanko did not seem too happy about the defensive effort. Detroit gave up over 200 yards rushing in the game and over 400 yards of total offense. "We can't give up yards like that on the ground and expect to be successful", coach Fanko said after the game.
On offense the Lions unleashed an aerial assault throwing over 400 yards between Stafford, Hill, and Moore. The first team offense scored a couple TDs both passes from Matthew Stafford. "I thought it was a good start for our unit and something to build on for the Baltimore game next week" QB Matthew Stafford had to say about his preseason start. Coach Fanko also said that he would like to get Kevin Smith involved more in the next game after he only received one carry. At this point the Lions backfield seems to be wide open with Leshore and Bell competing for more carries.

Newly-hired head coach Zach Fanko made his first cuts of the preseason today as the following players were let go:
WR Maurice Stovall
TE Don Mulbach
WR Patrick Edwards
WR Nate Hughes
Coach Fanko also named Kevin Smith the starting RB for their preseason game against Cleveland. 2nd year back Mikel Leshore will also see playing time although he will serve his 2-game suspension starting week 1 due to legal problems during the off-season. When asked how much playing time QB Matthew Stafford would receive, coach Fanko replied "Me and Matt discussed the game and we agreed that for this first game we would like to see a few drives from the starting offense". Come back next week as we breakdown the Lions performance in week 1 of the preseason.

Shocking news out of Detroit today, head coach Jim Schwartz has resigned citing personal issues, this coming directly after a season in which the Lions made the playoffs for first time since 1999.
The Detroit Lions reportedly have already found Schwartz' replacement, former Miami(OH) head coach Zach Fanko will take over. Coach Fanko led the RedHawks to back-to-back BCS bowl berths including last season's Rose Bowl win over Michigan. Fanko a lifetime Lions fan had this to say after being hired, "this is a dream come true for me, I know the history of this proud franchise and I want to be the one who brings the Lombardi Trophy to this great city".
So will Zach Fanko lead the Lions to Super Bowl glory? We shall see!
