The Lions led in almost every major category Sunday night except one. 5 Detroit turnovers were the difference as the Giants advantageous defense picked off Matthew Stafford and Jake Rudock twice each in a 27-12 loss.

Aside from the loss, the biggest takeaway from the game was a late third quarter injury to Matthew Stafford as he left the game with a apparent shoulder injury. No tests have been done yet, but initial signs point to him being out at least next week against Green Bay.

If Stafford is to miss time, it shall be 2nd-year QB Jake Rudock out of Michigan to take the starting role. His first start would be a tall order as he faces the Packers on Monday Night Football.

The NFL regular season is upon us as the Oakland Raiders head to Foxboro to take on the defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots on Thursday night.

There is not shortage of storylines heading into the season, but here are a few to keep an eye on as we kick off the season.

Last chance for Super Bowl in Denver for Romo?

Denver gave up a bounty of picks and promising young QB Trevor Siemian to acquire the veteran Romo in a trade during the offseason. GM/President John Elway knows the time is now for the Broncos and their window for another championship is closing, but is Romo is the answer? Only time will tell if the star quarterback can remain healthy enough to lead the Broncos in what should be one of the most competitive divisions in the AFC West. Denver kicks off the season with a road game in New York against the Jets.

Dawning of a new era in New England

Future hall of famer Tom Brady called it quits after capturing his 5th Super Bowl title this past offseason. The Patriots legend holds nearly every franchise record. So where do the Patriots go from here? Well it seems that Jimmy Garrapollo will get his shot to take the reigns early in the season, with second year QB Jacoby Brissett not far behind him. Could this be a transition year for the Patriots? One thing is for sure, if HC Bill Belechick can have this team contending without Brady, he is truly the greatest coach of all time. New England faces Oakland on Thursday night to open the season.

Chargers debut season in L.A.

After over 50 years in San Diego, the Chargers are returning to where their franchise was born in Los Angeles. With the Rams making the move last season we now have two franchises in the City of Angels. If anything it will be interesting to see how it all plays out as the Rams and Chargers duel for L.A. supremacy.

Where would would Romo play in 2017? That was the question that everyone was asking as the veteran QB made it known he wanted to play for a contender. Well the Broncos answered the call and paid a hefty price as they dealt two draft picks and former starting QB Trevor Siemian to bring in Tony Romo.

What does this mean for the Cowboys? This is now undoubtedly Dak Prescott's team after a marvelous rookie season leading Dallas to a division title and a 1st round bye in the playoffs.

For the Broncos it means they might be on a short list of contenders, but the AFC West may be the toughest division with two 12-team win teams from a season ago in Kansas City and Oakland. Can Romo lead Denver to the promise land like another aging veteran did a couple season's ago? Only time will tell, but the Broncos have an elite defense paired with what looks like a potent offense.

The Lions may have gotten the win in their pre-season matchup with Tampa Bay, but injury to star receiver Golden Tate overshadowed the victory. The veteran receiver suffered a broken collarbone on the first drive of Saturday night's pre-season game at Ford Field. While the the extent of the injury is not known yet, team doctors are saying the injury could take up to 8 weeks to heal.

Matthew Stafford didn't let Tate's injury slow down the starting offense as he led two scoring drives and went 5/5 for 66 yards. Stafford connected with newcomer Taylor Gabriel for a 32-yard scoring strike to finish his day. Gabriel also showed his playmaking ability later in the game with a nice punt return into Bucs territory. It will be interesting to see how Gabriel's role in the offense expands with Tate out of the lineup for the foreseeable future.

Aside from the passing game, Detroit continued to struggle rushing the ball and if not for a 44-yard TD run by Zach Zenner in the third quarter the stats would have looked much worse. The Lions are hoping 1st round draft pick Asher Fiammetta at guard can help open some holes in the running game this season. Neither Ameer Abdullah (4 yards) or Theo Riddick (11 yards) did much in their limited playing time.

The biggest positive from the game may have come on the defensive side of the ball as the Lions pass rush pressured both Jameis Winston and Mike Glennon for 6 sacks total. The Detroit defense also was able to stop the run for the most part, but did give up a long 52-yard TD run to Russell Hansbrough in the second half.

Overall, it was a good performance for the Lions in their first pre-season game as they look ahead to next week's game in D.C. against the Washington Redskins.

Head coach Jim Caldwell talked about his impressions on the game.

"You know I thought we played really well and executed at a high level," Caldwell said. "It's just pre-season, but I think our team was itching to play some real football again."

When asked about Tate's injury, coach Caldwell declined comment and said he would let the team's medical officials take care of that.

The Lions could have went a variety of different ways with their first pick in the draft and decided to strengthen the interior of their offensive line with the selection of LG Asher Fiammetta out of Wisconsin. The 6'4" 326 pounder excelled as a run blocker for the Badgers and should be able to help Detroit immediately. In the 6th round, the Lions found who they think could be one of the top steals of the draft in DeMarcus Sheffield. The Lehigh HB ran the third fastest time at the combine and at 6'1" 213 pounds has the frame to mix it up in between the tackles.

Here's a recap of the Lions entire draft as well as the top ten picks in this year's draft.

With a new season about to kickoff, Colorado was hoping to avenge last season's blowout loss to in-state rival Colorado State. Although it didn't look good for the Buffaloes as they trailed 14-3 late in the 2nd quarter.

However, the Buffaloes would take a 17-14 lead late in the half after a 17 yard TD run by Jay MacIntyre. An interception on the ensuing Rams drive gave Colorado a chance to pick up more points, which they did as Chris Graham hit a 34 yard field goal with 2 seconds left to increase the Buffaloes lead to 20-14. What would happen next might just be one of the most incredible sequences in football history.

Looking to keep CSU from a long return, Graham squib kicked the ball which happened to bounce directly off one of the Rams helmet on the front line and back into the hands of Graham. With no time coming off the clock, the Buffaloes still had a last second chance for a hail mary. Liufau dropped back to his right and hurled up a prayer to the middle of the field which somehow MacIntyre caught and ran in for a 56 yard touchdown. In total Colorado scored 24 points in the final 2:20 of the half to seize a 27-14 lead.

The Rams never recovered as the Buffaloes steamrolled their rivals on their way to a 48-14 win.

Colorado head coach Zach Fanko was shocked to say the least at how the 1st half ended.

"No we didn't plan out that onside kick, I told Chris[Graham] to squib it, don't let them get a long return," said Fanko. "Sometimes you just need a little luck I guess."

A huge win for the Buffaloes indeed as they prepare for another rival as Nebraska comes into Boulder for the first time since 2009, when both teams still played in the Big 12. Colorado hasn't beaten the Cornhuskers since 2007 and has lost the last 4 in the series.

It was quite the year for Kansas and 1st-year head coach Taylor Zachar as the Jayhawks won 8 games and made it to their first bowl game since 2008. KU defeated 13th-ranked Stanford 16-10 in the Alamo Bowl to cap off an outstanding first season for coach Zachar.

For Zachar the toughest part was changing the philosophy of the offense from an air raid type offense to more of a pro style rushing attack. While the offense had its up and downs throughout last season, the Jayhawks hit their stride late in the season as evident by their win over a tough Stanford team.

While KU doesn't return many starters this season, they have some talented young players ready to prove themselves. True freshman HB Kevin Jones is receiving rave reviews so far and many are expecting him to earn the bulk of the carries in 2016. The Jayhawks will have a new QB leading their offense this season as senior Montell Cozart steps into the starting role. Cozart did play in the 2nd half of last season's bowl win and has the mobility and arm strength that Zachar likes from his quarterbacks. Cozart will be targeting his TE a lot as senior Kent Taylor is also back after having a breakout junior campaign. The 6'5", 230 lb TE caught 59 balls for 778 yards and 5 TDs in 2015. Taylor was recently voted a 2nd-team All-American.

KU has a relatively inexperienced defense this season, but pre-season 2nd-team All-American safety Tevin Shaw is back for his senior season after grabbing 2 picks and forcing a fumble in 2015. The Piscataway, NJ native also finished 2nd on the team in tackles with 47. It will be up to an experienced secondary to help bring along a young front 7 for the Jayhawks.

Can Kansas improve on its 2015 season? The Jayhawks are an inexperienced squad, but are not short on talent after coach Zachar brought in good recruiting class. The schedule is tough with just 5 home games, and they also open the season against old rival Missouri on the road. Big 12 media has the Jayhawks pegged to finish 7th in the conference, but I'm sure Zachar has KU thinking bigger than that.

It's that time of year again as we usher in another year of Colorado Buffaloes football. This season will mark head coach Zach Fanko's 2nd season at the helm after posting a 5-7 mark in year 1.

Despite missing out on a bowl game in 2015, the Buffaloes improved immensely last year and return 16 starters from a team that lost many close games.

One of those returning starters is senior QB Sefo Liufau who had an up and down year in 2015. According to some CU coaches, Liufau has had an outstanding Summer working out and is expected to have a breakout season. If the dual-threat QB can cutdown on his turnovers then Colorado could have one of the better signal-callers in the Pac-12.

While last season's leading rusher Christian Powell is gone, senior HB Michael Adkins III returns after winning National Kick Returner of the Year in 2015. Adkins didn't get many carries last season but scored 2 TDs and averaged 4.4 yards per carry.

The strength of Colorado's team will most likely be it's defense with 2 pre-season All-American's in DE Derek McCartney and MLB Addison Gillam. McCartney, a Junior(RS), broke CU's school record for sacks in a season with 17. Meanwhile Gillam, the senior LB, led the Buffaloes in tackles with 68(13 for loss), had 2 sacks, and also had 2 interceptions. Colorado's front 7 should be among the best in the conference and the secondary is experienced as well with 2 senior corners projected to start.

So how good can Colorado be in 2016? Well a home friendly schedule that includes 8 games within the state of Colorado should help CU a lot. The toughest stretch of the season will be when the Buffaloes go on the road to face USC and Oregon before hosting UCLA all in consecutive weeks. If Colorado can come out of that with at least 1-2 wins they could be in a good position to receive an invite to their first bowl game since 2007.

Joe Gray had a record performance and San Jose State played well in all phases of the game to defeat Colorado State 52-13.

A convincing win for San Jose State who just two weeks ago were dominated by New Mexico. Junior QB Joe Gray set the tone for the Spartans with an unbelievable game on the ground, scoring a school record 4 rushing TDs and adding one through the air for 5 total TDs. Gray had 233 total yards, of which 135 came on the ground, before being pulled at the start of the 4th quarter in favor of freshmen Patrick Scott.

Gray was not the only story of the game however as the Spartan defense had their best game of the season in limiting the Rams' offense to 280 total yards. Senior QB Conner Smith was harassed all game and sacked 5 times. Senior CB Jimmy Pruitt also recorded an INT for his first of the season.

Although 5 TDs came from Joe Gray, earlier in a 7-7 game right after Colorado State had tied the game up with a long TD drive the electric Tim Crawley broke his own record of longest kick return with a 104 yard return for a TD to seize the momentum for SJSU. Also true freshmen QB Patrick Scott was able to get some playing time late and connected with junior TE Billy Freeman for a 52 yard TD.

Following the game, Colorado State head coach Jim McElwain did not seem very happy about a late TD pass and criticized SJSU head coach Zach Fanko.

"I don't know where he[Fanko] coached before SJSU," said McElwain. "But here in the Mountain West we respect each other as head coaches and I didn't think that was necessary to run up the score late. You know? Show some class."

Coach Fanko fired back later in his press conference.

"Is this pee-wee football or division 1? I just was just wondering because I'm not going to tell my true freshmen QB to stop playing football because we're up by a lot of points."

Coach Fanko later discussed the game and his first win as head coach of San Jose State.

"It feels great to get that first win for sure," said Fanko. "Our guys showed tremendous effort in all aspects of the game. Joe played outstanding and seemed a step ahead of everyone. We knew it was going to take a huge effort against Colorado State to stop the run like we did and kudos to our guys on a great couple weeks of practice. Huge game coming up next week so we have to get back to it."

After a dominating win over Colorado State, the Spartans head back onto the road to face the Auburn Tigers.

After last week's tough 47-34 loss to Oregon State to open the season, many pundits predicted that the Spartans would show up in Albuquerque hungry for a win, but it was the Lobos who appeared to want the game more as evident by the 48-17 thrashing of San Jose State.

Senior QB Cole Gautsche of New Mexico had quite a day against the Spartan defense but not how you would expect. It was the legs of Gautsche that San Jose State struggled to stop as the QB accounted for 207 yards on the ground and 2 TDs to lead the Lobos. He also threw for 177 yards and a TD. Senior QB Joe Gray ended up leaving the game early in the 2nd quarter and never returned only accounting for 33 yards through the air and 22 on the ground. Back-up Jason Habash was unable to lead the Spartans back, throwing for 193 yards and a TD but also 2 picks. Gray is expected to play in San Jose State's home-opener vs Colorado State which will take place in two weeks following a bye week.

Head coach Zach Fanko did admit losing Gray was a huge blow to the offense but seemed more troubled by his defense.

"Yeah it hurt for sure losing Joe in the 2nd quarter but I'm not sure it would have mattered much the way we played on defense," said Fanko. "When you give up over 200 yards rushing, especially to the opposing team's QB, you're not doing a great job defensively. So we have a lot to work on these next couple weeks, thankfully we have a bye this week and hopefully we will be ready for Colorado State."

Turnovers doomed San Jose State in a 47-34 loss to Oregon State. It was a tale of two halves for junior QB Joe Gray who played outstanding in the 1st half in leading the Spartans to a 24-20 halftime lead. But the 2nd half would spiral downward as 3 INTs and a fumble would prove costly. SJSU would pull within 34-27 on a 100 yd kickoff return for a TD by Tim Crawley but the Beavers would go on to score on the ensuing drive and ultimately win the game.

When asked how he felt about the game Coach Fanko responded "well we hung tough vs a pretty good football team, credit to coach Riley and Oregon State, but turnovers were a killer for us. Can't expect to turn it over 5 times and win many games, but I'm proud of my guys for how hard they played. We will be better next week vs New Mexico."

Tune in next week as the Spartans travel to Albuquerque to face the Lobos of New Mexico in a MWC opener for both teams.

There wasn't much to be excited about heading into this game after last week's shellacking by Alabama but the Panthers offense finally came together the way offensive coordinator Zach Fanko thought it would at the beginning of the season as Georgia State pulled off a stunning upset of Troy to kickoff the Sun Belt season.

Starting HB Gerald Howse went down with a concussion early in the 1st quarter but back-up Travis Evans came in and showed his coaches why he might be the best back on the team. A 117 yard day along with a signature TD on an option play late in the game that put the Panthers up for good. Sophomore QB Ronnie Bell's first start wasn't spectacular(17-30, 191 Yds, 2 INTs) but the young QB made some big throws when he had to and showed the athleticism to make plays when the pocket was breaking down.

The Trojans had a shot to tie the game following a Brandon Burks TD run with 1:27 left but the 2-point conversion that followed failed but Troy was able to get the ball back once again as Georgia State was unable to run out the clock. QB Corey Robinson guided the Trojans all the way down the field to the 23 yard line with 3 seconds left but this would not be Robinson's day as his errant pass was deflected and fell incomplete.

Georgia State will leave the friendly confines of the Georgia Dome as they travel to Texas State to face the Bobcats next week.

After last week's loss to Samford, Soph. QB Ben McLane told reporters he would bounce back and did he ever as Georgia State won their first game as an FBS school in a 32-15 victory over Chattanooga. McLane threw for 332 yards and 2 TDs to lead the Panthers after starting HB Gerald Howse missed much of the game with an apparent leg injury. Offensive coordinator told reporters why he decided to air out the ball more this week.

"They[Chattanooga] were stacking the box against us daring us to pass so I pulled Ben aside and said lets air it out a little," said Fanko, "Sometimes you just have to get away from running the football and today was one of those days."

Chattanooga was able to get within two after returning a punt 79 yards for a TD but a failed 2-point conversion would prevent them from tying the game and that was as close as the Mocs would get. Junior HB Gerald Howse returned to the game late to give the Panthers a lift in the running game as he record two rushing TDs to help Georgia State pull away.

Tune in next week as Georgia State has its first road test of the season. The Panthers will be traveling to Morgantown to face West Virginia.
