Georgia State Panthers (0-1) | 14 | 7 | 0 | 13 | 34 |
A new era of Panther football started with a loss Saturday as the Panthers failed to build on a 14-0 lead early, leading to a frustrating 38-34 loss. Sophomore QB Ben McLane struggled, throwing 3 INTs and coughing up the ball once as well for 4 total turnovers. A bright spot for the Panthers was Junior HB Gerald Howse who ran for a school record 203 yards on 26 carries. Quite a performance Howse and perhaps an indicator of what is to come for Georgia State and this offense who ran the ball very efficiently.
The Panthers almost came up with the win after McLane connected with fellow Sophomore Avery Sweeting for the 38 yard TD to put Georgia State up 34-31 with 1:10 left. The Bulldogs would not be outdone though as Senior QB Tim Brown led Samford down the field and into field goal range. With less than 30 seconds left Brown was able to find his receiver open near the goal line and connected with him for a 14 yard TD pass to put the Bulldogs up for good.
Head coach Trent Miles was asked how he thought his team played in their first game as a FBS school, "Well we lost to an FCS school, no disrespect to Samford they played a great game, but we have to take better care of the ball if we're going to compete at this level." Offensive coordinator Zach Fanko also had a few words about how the offense ran, "I thought other than the turnovers our offense played very well, have to give credit to the o-line. They opened up some holes today for Gerald who ran the ball very well today. Hopefully we can fix the turnover issues before next week."
Georgia State will stay home next week as they welcome in the Mocs of Chattanooga.

Georgia State has finally settled their staff as they prepare for their first season in FBS football. Head coach Trent Miles welcomed Zach Fanko as the new offensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator for the Panthers. A surprising choice by some close to the program considering how young Fanko is, 27, but he does have valuable experience coaching at the D-1 level after recently leaving Michigan State after 4 seasons as their offensive line coach. Fanko wants to implement a one-back system, one similar to the pro-style attack the Panthers have been running the past few seasons.
"I'm excited and thankful for this opportunity" said Fanko, "I can't wait to get out on the practice field and begin the season."

All off-season the Buckeyes had this game penciled into their calendar. Ever since a loss in the Big Ten Championship cost them a shot at an undefeated season and a spot in the National Championship. This time Ohio State would prevail as Nebraska came up just short, an interception at the goal line sealed the 37-30 win for the Buckeyes on a day where Tommy Armstrong may have played the best game of his career.
The sophomore QB threw for 354 yards and 2 TDs, also 63 rushing yards and 2 TDs. The Heisman hopeful Ameer Abdullah failed to rush for 100 yards for the first time this season, only totaling 84 yards.
The loss drops Nebraska to 5-1(2-1) on the season and more than likely a drop in the polls. The schedule doesn't get any easier for the Cornhuskers as they go back on the road to Madison to face the undefeated Badgers in a pivotal Big Ten West showdown.

After last week's thrilling win over Rutgers, Nebraska's coaching staff knew this weekend's game would be an even tougher challenge. Although Penn State came into the game 2-3(0-2), the Nittany Lions featured one of the best young QB's in the nation in sophomore Christian Hackenberg.
Nebraska's young QB started off the game on a hot streak connecting on 4 straight passes including a 6 yd TD pass to senior WR Taariq Allen. A field goal near the end of the first quarter and the Cornhuskers would lead 9-0.
Two big plays would highlight the game for Nebraska in the 2nd quarter. Up 9-7 after a Penn State scoring drive, QB Tommy Armstrong Jr connected with All-American WR Kenny Bell on a beautiful deep pass over the middle as Bell raced 80 yards for the touchdown to put the Huskers up 16-7. Later in the quarter Nebraska forced a 3 and out and set up to punt with the score 16-10 in favor of the Huskers. A deep punt to Taariq Allen who returned it 84 yards for the TD, his second TD of the game. Going into the break Nebraska led Penn State 26-10.
Another TD in the 3rd and Nebraska's lead was cut down to 29-17 as we entered the final stanza. Hackenberg would not let the Nittany Lions quit as he led Penn State down the field where on 3rd and goal from the 3 he sensed pressure and scrambled to the corner pylon and dived for the TD to make 29-24. Junior kicker Mauro Bondi redeemed himself after last week's 2-4 showing by connecting on 5 field goals including one from 52 yards to put the game just enough out of reach for Penn State. The Nittany Lions would make things interesting however as they were able to score again but Hackenberg missed a wide-open receiver in the back of the endzone to fail the 2-point conversion.
Still 32-30 late in the 4th, the Huskers had a chance to ice the game but were unable to get a first down on 3rd and 2 and were forced to kick a field goal and make it 35-30 with 39 seconds left. First play of the drive Hackenberg connected on a 35 yd pass to get the ball inside the 40 but that would be the closest Penn State would get as Hackenberg threw 4 straight in completions and turned the ball over on downs ending the game.
A thrilling win for Nebraska indeed as they improve to 5-0(2-0) and elsewhere in the Big Ten a stunning upset as previously undefeated Illinois shocks the #2 Buckeyes at the Horseshoe 27-24 in overtime to give the Braxton Miller and Ohio State their first loss of the season. In what was supposed to be a battle of undefeated, Ohio State comes into Lincoln in a game that maybe a preview of the Big Ten Championship.

After two weeks off #3 Nebraska came into their Big Ten opener a little rusty and almost fell victim to an upset. Although Rutgers was unable to get into the endzone in the 1st half they went into the locker room trailing only 17-10 thanks to an interception returned for a touchdown.
The second half would turn out to be a defensive struggle as neither team mustered much yardage. At the end of the third quarter Nebraska led the Scarlet Knights 20-10. Rutgers would try and mount a comeback as Senior QB Gary Nova led Rutgers all the way down inside the 5 where on 3 and goal from the 3 he found pay dirt himself with TD run to make it 20-17 halfway through the 4th. QB Tommy Armstrong Jr would not let his two earlier interceptions faze him as he led the Huskers offense down the field where he found his tight end Sam Cotton for a 17 yd scoring strike to increase the lead to 27-17. Rutgers would find the endzone once again with less than 2 minutes to go but a failed onside kick attempt would seal their fate as the Huskers escaped Piscataway with a close win.
Tune in next Saturday as Nebraska invades Happy Valley to face Penn State in what should be a thrilling Big Ten contest.
In what many experts were predicting as a trap game for Nebraska after their huge win over Miami, the Huskers walked into Bulldog Stadium and walked away with a relatively easy win.
Nebraska's offense once again pounded the rock for an amazing 376 yards rushing and 6 TDs. Senior HB Ameer Abdullah led the way with 271 yards rushing and 2 TDs. Back-up running back Imar Cross also went over 100 yards. While Sopomore QB Tommy Armstrong Jr had a decent day with 227 yards passing and a TD he also threw 2 picks but the mistakes would not cost the Huskers.
A close game at the half, only a 21-14 lead by Nebraska turned into a blow-out thanks to a 3 TD third quarter by the Huskers. Nebraska would go on to win 49-28 to improve to 3-0 on the season. Next up for Nebraska a 2 week layoff before they kick off the Big Ten season with another road game against new Big Ten member Rutgers.

It was the most talked about game of the week and it did not disappoint. Nebraska was able to establish the run early thanks to another monster game from HB Ameer Abdullah but the Huskers only managed 3 points in the 1st stanza. Late in the 1st quarter in a 3-3 game, Malcom Lewis put the Canes in front on an electrifying 102 yard kickoff return. With Nebraska leading 14-13 the two teams went to the locker-room.
In the 3rd quarter Miami took control as their defense was able to stop Nebraska on 3 separate occasions. 2 TDs by the Miami offense would put the Canes up 26-14 going into the 4th. As the 4th began Sophomore QB Tommy Armstrong Jr had the Huskers knocking on the door on a 3rd down from the 13. Armstrong found All-American wideout Kenny Bell at the front pylon for the score. Bell's TD would be reviewed and proven a catch.
Miami would take over with a chance to ice the game but Nebraska's defense stood tall and got the stop it's offense needed. Down 26-21 with less than 5 minutes to go Armstrong led the Huskers down the field and into the redzone once again. About to be sacked on 3rd down Armstrong came through and found his tight end across the middle for the score and the lead. With the game hanging in the balance and Miami only needed a field goal to win, Senior SS Harvey Jackson made what would be the biggest play picking off Ryan Williams and ending the Canes chances.
A coming of age for the young Tommy Armstrong Jr and the Huskers as they prevail over Miami

Nebraska's expected tune-up game before their top-ten showdown with Miami ended up being anything but that as Nebraska was put on upset alert well in to the 2nd half. First-year starter Tommy Armstrong Jr struggled at QB throwing an early pick 6 that gave the the Owls a 7-0 lead. Nebraska would bounce back however with two field-goals to make it 7-6 at the half. With 2 first half turnovers, OC Zach Fanko decided to play it safe and keep the ball on the ground. This strategy worked to perfection as Nebraska methodically moved the ball down the field. Senior HB Ameer Abdullah capped the drive off with an 8-yard TD run and the ensuing 2-point conversion to make it 14-7 Huskers. A field goal on the next drive would be as close as FAU would get as Nebraska's run-oriented offense pounded the Owls defense to the tune of over 200 yards rushing. Much of the damage done by Abdullah who scored 2 TDs, one rushing and one receiving late in the game for a final score of 28-10.
Next week #9 Miami comes into Lincoln for what should be as great a match-up as their is in the country!

The Defending Champions are #1 once again to start the 2014 season. Alabama won their 3rd straight Nat'l Championship last season and is a threat to win their 4th straight. This maybe head coach Nick Saban's toughest season yet though after losing both coordinators to head coaching jobs. Last year's runner-up Nebraska comes in at #7. The Cornhuskers will be featuring a somewhat new offense this fall after hiring OC Zach Fanko from Tulane. Nebraska will feature a mostly pro-style look after running the spread option the last few seasons.

Offensive Coordinator Zach Fanko has decided to leave Tulane after only one season to take the same position at Nebraska. Very surprising move from the young coach who many believed to be coming back after leading the Green Wave to record breaking year on offense, finishing 2nd in the country in total offense. It looked like Fanko was going to be the successor to head coach Curtis Johnson who was hired by Wake Forest but Tulane decided to go with Louisville offensive coordinator Shawn Watson. Reports are saying that this may have been the reason for Fanko leaving Tulane.
Now coach Fanko takes over a Nebraska offense that weeks ago was playing for a National Championship. Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini had this to say about the hire, "Zach brings a lot of energy on the offensive side of the football and a commitment to the run game which will work out very well for us".

Matthew Stafford and the Lions will try and move on after last week's heart-breaking loss to the 49ers. Although Stafford was benched in the first half of that loss Coach Zach Fanko has no ideas of benching his young QB in favor of the more experience Shaun Hill. "Matt is our guy for this week and hopefully for a long time, he'll play much better this week" said Coach Fanko when asked about a possible QB controversy in Detroit. The Detroit defense will have their hands full in Tennessee as they will have to contain RB Chris Johnson who has yet to have breakout game this season but is always dangerous.

Week 2 is in the books and 10 unbeatens remain, surprisingly enough the Indianapolis Colts are one of those teams after defeating the Bears in Week 1 and the Vikings this week. The #1 pick Andrew Luck has played exceptionally well in leading the Colts to 2-0, 393 yards and 2 touchdowns thus far on the season.
Sunday night in San Francisco did not disappoint as the Lions and 49ers combined for 111 points in a 57-54 Niners victory. The Lions struggled early as Matthew Stafford threw 4 picks in the 1st half before being pulled for back-up Shaun Hill who brought the Lions back before throwing a costly interception that led to David Akers game-winning field goal. Starting middle linebacker Stephen Tulloch suffered a broken collarbone in last week's loss to the 49ers and will be out for some time. According to team doctors this injury could take up to 3 weeks to heal. This is a definite blow to the Lions defense that has already been struggling in the first couple weeks of the season. Rookie Travis Lewis is set to start next week against Tennessee, Coach Fanko announced at his weekly press conference.

This game will not be forgotten for a while as the Lions and the 49ers combined for 111 points on Sunday night. Although the scoreboard was lit up throughout the night it was the 49ers ball-hawking defense that won the day as they forced 7 Detroit turnovers, 6 interceptions. Detroit QB Matthew Stafford struggled mightily, throwing 4 interception, 2 of which were returned for 49ers touchdowns, before getting pulled by Coach Fanko in favor of back-up Shaun Hill. Shaun Hill played a fine game in relief throwing 4 TDs but a late interception would prove to be costly as it led to a David Akers winning field-goal with 49 second remaining. When asked about the status of Matthew Stafford for next week's game in Tennessee Coach Fanko replied, "He's our QB and he will remain our QB. Shaun played a great game when asked to come in and I'm proud of him but Matt wasn't the only one who struggled out their tonight". So it appears that there is no QB controversy in Detroit for now we shall see how Matthew Stafford responds next week after this horrid performance.
