Coaches Corner:
After scouting the Spartans, I knew they would pass most of the game. we played cover 2 to take away the deep threat. Although they were able to post decent passing yards, they weren't able to convert many 3rd downs which kept their momentum at a minimum. They threw in an occasional draw to throw us off, but they went right back to passing. Great game forcing turnovers!
We balanced our offense with the running game still as our main focus. Both Broadnax and Harris gained over 100 yards while still moving the ball through the air on play action passes and slants.

Coaches Corner:
"UConn's offense carries 2 very athletic and speedy starters in their QB and HB. Started the game playing a lot of man defense with the MLB mainly as a QB spy. As well,, he was the person we would key on if they ran the option. This strategy paid off early on as their QB looked to run if nobody was open right away. We were able to keep his gains at a minimum. The starting QB went down with an injury in the second quarter. He broke his shoulder and is now out for the season.
The back-up QB was more of a passer, so we aborted our QB spy and stayed with man. He seemed to nickel and dime us with crossing routes or comeback routes along the sideline. I had the team switch to cover 3 zones for the remainder of the game. This allowed us to use some zone blitzes to put pressure on him and force him to try to thread passes.
On offense, we used the option mainly. Our HB Broadnax is receiving Heisman hype so I want to keep him in the race while at the same time giving QB Harris chances to make plays with his legs. Times where they stacked the box, I'd call a play action roll-out pass to hit short routes. This seemed to work much of the game and helped control the clock once we had a decent lead.
