[Foxboro] UMass got it done on the ground and threw the air as they humiliated the Bobcats. TE Blanchflower had a tremendous game as he caught 9 receptions for 148 yard and 2 touchdowns. HB Cox silenced critics as well with his 118 yard on 21 carries performance. And don't forget his 2 touchdowns. Williams did see the field as he added 52 yards to the Minutemen's rushing total. QB Pagel threw for 243 yards and 3 scores.
The offense had a great day, but it still stands that the defenses had a tremendous day. DE Potvin added 4 sacks to his season's stats and he is starting to gather some recognition nationally. There may be awards in his future. Add his sacks to the 4 interceptions collected with 1 being returned for 6, and you will see why this years UMass team is lead by their defense. Coach Wilson has always stated that putting up points was good, but defense was his foundation. "Everybody loves an exciting passing and running game! But for me, taking the ball away from the other team and scoring is the ultimate joy. Then you kick it off to them and tell them to "Try Again" That's a joy all in it's own!"
This season has gotten off to a good start this season for the Minutemen. This was not expected by any one person. If someone says differently they'd be lying. UMass travels to take on Western Michigan next week. Let's see if they can silence another Michigan team.

[Miami] Still riding off the high of besting the Michigan Wolverines, who where #3 at the time, UMass entered conference play. Their conference opener was on the home turf on Miami (OH) University. While QB Pagel captured the Player of the Game award, the story was UMass's relentless defense who played aggresively and caused 6 turnovers, 3 of which turned into direct scores. With an ending score of 59-14, there isn't much to comment on that wouldn't be considered bragging, so we will just leave it as..... Game well played UMass!
M. Cox went down once again with a strained abdominal, but was able to return later. Meanwhile, HB Williams gained 58 yards on 9 carries with an average of 6.4 per carry. As for Cox, 9 carries for 37 yards with an average of 4.1. Cox still holds the starting spot, but Williams is more consistent as of right now and is definitely more conditioned. We shall see next week as Ohio travels to Gillette Stadium, UMass's firts home game in conference play.

[Ann Harbor] It wasn't easy! It wasn't pretty! But at the end of the game, the UMass Minutemen narrowly defeated #3 Michigan Wolverines 22-21 in Ann Harbor. Much of the talk coming into this game was, "How will UMass contain Denard Robinson?" The answer: force him to try to do it all on his own! While doing decently in the air, Robinson pulled the ball down too many times. In all, 11 carries for 19 yards. Their final two plays, which would have put them in range to kick the winning FG, Robinson decided to run instead of pass which both resulted in sacks and a turnover on downs.
UMass's offense wasn't pretty, but came through with some important scores and first downs when needed. Most notebly, Pagel's 31 yard TD pass to Blanchflower which cut the Wolverine's lead to 2. The UMass defense gave everything they had. While making it a point to key in on Robinson, UMass defense came up big with a safety after a coffin corner punt by Strait and the fourth down stop that sealed the deal.
"If you look back at the game, there was always 1 or 2 players spying Robinson. After his first play from scrimmage was a 18 yard run, I knew we had to have someone in his face every play! Didn't matter if the spy was a DE or CB, we triangulated a spy system around him at all times. It worked. No complaints." coach Wilson said in the post game press conference. And when asked about HB Cox, who yet again missed a quarter due to injury, coach Wilson simply stated, "Football is a tough game. It takes everything out of you. As long as he shows toughness and keeps getting up and moving forward, I have no doubts he will be our starter. If anything changes, we will have a HB duo because both are turning in great seasons so far!"

If you wanted big games, then here you go! the #3 Wolverines will be the hihgest ranked opponent the Minutemen will face all year. And quite frankly, we all want to know what is coach Wilson's plan for Denard Robinson?! He's quite the dynamic player! On the run or in the air, he should be a major concern for the Minutemen. "There are quite a few options to consider whenever you face an opponent with a player as versatile as Denard Robinson," stated Wilson in a press conference earlier this week. "We can take the approach Ohio St. did with Vince Young when they played UT. We can do some other things too. One thing is certain, my players will give they all and leave it on the field! Michigan will know that a war was fought in their stadium! Win, lose, or draw!"

[Foxboro] Indiana's fans watched what was nothing more than a laugh-er as they watched their Hoosiers ripped a part buy the UMass Minutemen. The Minutemen were considered the underdogs, even by ESPN's Gameday crew. They ate those words by halftime. UMass came out strong with a read option that Pagel kept and ran for 26 yards. It was a beautiful opening drive capped by a Pagel touchdown throw to Hill on a seam route. The defense never knew what hit them. In football, many argue whether it is the run that sets up the pass, or the pass that sets up the run. On this day, UMass did it both ways. They kept the Hoosiers on their heels. The second half was the same.
In the second half, Indiana decided to go with their back-up QB Roberson. In an attempt to capitalize off of his versatility and speed, Indiana resorted to options, screens, and draws. The only thing that appeared to bail them out at tough times were the draws. Roberson's 1 TD pass came from a blown coverage as they went no huddle for most of the second half.
The defense brought pressure all game, which is evident in the 13 hurries, 5 sacks, and 4 interceptions with 1 being taken to the house for a TD by CB Birt. When asked about the intensity of the defense, coach Wilson responded, "My defensive players don't touch the field unless they see red! And today, they saw red for every second that was on the clock! I couldn't be more pleased."
We saw HB Cox go down with another injury, this time it was his shoulder. He was forced to sit out for 2 quarters. In that time, HB Williams put up more yards on 4 less carries than Cox. One would think that if this becomes a trend, we may see more of Williams.......Maybe even as a starter.
Next week UMass travels to Ann Harbor to take on the #3 Michigan Wolverines.

[Foxboro] For UMass, it doesn't get much better than beating rival UConn in East Hartford. While neither teams were are to be considered amongst elite teams, both showed up to put up a hell of a game. In the first half is more like it. The first half presented a back and forth showing between both schools. UMass took the lead heading into half with a 59 yard pass by Pagel. When asked about the play leading into half, Pagel responded, "They played us short and I called for route adjustments and the rest is history. Coach Wilson constantly enforces Go Hard or Go Home! We went hard as the half ended!"
Go hard they did! The team after half showed more confidence and mixed it up more on both sides of the ball. The offense started to run with more authority even though their starting HB, M. Cox, went down in the 2nd quarter and was lost for the game. "I had some complication with my hamstring halfway through the 1st half. I tried stretching, but progress was slow. I expect to be back to 100% for next week!" stated Cox.
Coach Wilson seemed to have given the Minutemen a new edge. They stuck with the Spread offense and even ran quite a few successful options. Defensively, there were more zone blitzes than what we are used to from our Minutemen.
If not anything, the Minutemen are undefeated as of now. That is a reason to celebrate! Especially with Indiana coming here next week and the following week traveling to Ann Harbor to take on #9 Michigan.

[Foxboro] First game of the season is up! Coach Wilson has been implemented his changes from day 1. Let's see if it meshes well with the players and see if they have bought into what he's been selling. UConn is expected to be a tough game. They boast a speedy HB in Lyle McCombs accompanied by a strong arm in the pocket with Johnny McEntee who has returned for his senior year. On defense, the Huskies feature a CB duo with Blidi Wreh Wilson & Dwayne Gratz.
The season starts here for the Minutemen! Let's see if they are up to the task!

[Foxborough] The UMass Minutemen have announced that Head Coach John Wilson will be taking the reigns as they bventure into their first ever bowl eligible season. Coach Wilson, a graduate of University of Houston, is not taking the job lightly. "This is a giant step for this program! Becoming bowl eligible isn't just enough, getting there will be a challenge. And that is our goal! Anything else is a failure."
The Minutemen finished their 2011 season 5-6 and with the firing of their then head coach Kevin Morris. When questioned about the pressures of taking over a position from which the previous person was fired, coach Wilson stood sternly. "What this organization needs is a change! No disrespect to what preceded me, but I know that I have the knowledge to make UMass a dynamic program. And that is already taking place."
The Minutemen open their season on the road against the UConn Huskies. We will have more for you as we follow your 2012 UMass Minutemen and their new head coach, John Wilson.
