[Foxboro] UMass's kicker Levengood comes through again as he accounts for 12 of UMass's 19 points in their win over rival Connecticut. In a game where neither team appeared to have the edge over the other, the kicking game reigns supreme. Both UConn and the Minutemen didn't fair well on third down conversions which ultimately meant the entire game was going to be decided by who held better field position. That gave Levengood the chance to knock down all 4 of his kicks. While Pagel did thro for over 200 yards, he failed to land 1 in the end zone.

[Foxboro] Fresh off a bye week, UMass took on a very tough opponent in #4 Utah. An early test for the Minuteman, and they came out the victors. This game was a nasty battle from the beginning to the end. Utah took a hold of the game early on, blanking UMass in the first quarter 10-0, but UMass returned the favor in the second. 14-10 at the half, UMass.
Utah drew first blood in the second half with a 24 yard touchdown run, but kick returner Q. Smith answered back swiftly for UMass with a 103 yard kickoff return touchdown to give UMass the lead. In the fourth, Utah's QB C. Hansen struck gold again with a 36 yard TD pass to F. Fitzgerald. UMass responded with a game tying Levengood FG with 3:01 left on the clock. Utah came back with a strong drive, but failed on 3rd and 1 and was forced to punt, giving UMass the ball with 1:12 on the clock.
The final UMass drive was entirely about field position. dive, slant, slant, and screen to put UMass in field goal position. UMass used their final timeout to stop the clock with 0:02 seconds and Levengood came out and kicked the game winner from 34 yards out. CB Q. Smith captured Player of the Game with 205 KR yards and a TD.
"How can I not be proud of these kids? They played a hell of a game and never stopped believing! If I might say, this was one hell of a start to a season." - Coach Wilson

[Foxboro] Are you ready for some football?! The 2013 college football season has arrived and coach WIlson and the UMass Minutemen have a score to settle. After a historic undefeated season last year, the Minutemen fell short of a shot at a national title due to lack of strength in their schedule. Fluke? Many think so as UMass comes into the 2013 season not only without ranked, but also sitting outside the top 50 in college football. They enter the season at #66 on the complete Div-1 schools rankings.
Returning this year is team captains and leaders, seniors QB K. Pagel & B. Potvin. Pagel Potvin led the UMass to an outstanding Sugar Bowl victory over Arkansas. They have hopes of leading their Minutemen to another bowl game. This time a BCS National Championship. Wilson has brought UMass much talent with an outstanding recruiting class from '12 and many are expected to be in rotation very early. Many doubt whether coach Wilson can get it done with such young players having to come in and play right away. If anything, those doubters should have learned from last season.

[New Orleans] 14-0!!! It is to be celebrated! UMass entered the season with their first chance to qualify for a bowl game. Not only did they do so, they won it. UMass defeated Arkansas solidly. It was obvious from the start that Arkansas was faster, stronger, and more athletic than the players from UMass, but they didn't allow that to stop them. QB Pagel returned from injury and was cleared to start for UMass after being out for 12 weeks. And he was truly prepared. Pagel amassed 333 yards on 20 completions and 5 touchdowns. Williams saw most of the game in the backfield as the physical play of Arkansas bruised and battered Cox from being able to continue. He had a decent game with 118 yards rushing.
The showing from the Razorbacks players weren't bad, they just appeared to be ineffective. Tyler Wilson had a bad day in the pocket. The pressure kept him on the move and forced him to throw 2 interceptions. He had flashes of greatness on 2 beautiful touchdown passes, both over 40 yards. But as UMass's defense adjusted, he disappeared from the game. Arkansas' HB Davis presented much of a problem in the first half. At times it took 2 or 3 UMass players to take him down. But as the lead grew, his carries shrank. The score would have you believe the game was a blowout, but don't let the numbers fool you. Arkansas just fail to make best of the opportunities they had.
There was nothing but joy for coach Wilson in the post game press conference. "Did I expect the season to go this way? No! I wouldn't have bet $1 that this is how my first season would've been at UMass. All I know is that my players bought into my style of coaching and we made this happen together. Next season may be a whole different story, but today and until preseason workouts begin for next season, I'm going to relish this moment!"

[Detroit] The MAC Championship Game concluded today with the obvious team taking home the trophy. UMass embarrassed the Toledo Rockets as they continued to keep their undefeated season alive. Quinn captured yet another Player of the Game award as he threw for 251 yards and 2 touchdowns. Cox had a 101 yard rushing performance.
It has become very obvious that the Minutemen are playing on a level that nobody expected! Their aggresive defense and versatile offense has taken the college football world by storm this season. One thing for certain, while playing at this level, not only are other teams taking notice, but incoming freshmen are as well. So you should expect to see a new level of freshmen showing up in UMass uniforms.
With this win, UMass secured a spot in the Allstate Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. They are matched against Tyler Wilson and the Arkansas Razorbacks (11-1).

[Foxboro] Quinn earns another Player of the Game as #17 UMass downed the Buffalo Bulls dramatically. Quinn threw for 399 yards and 5 touchdowns as he torched the Bulls' secondary. The duo of Cox and Williams appeared yet again recording a touchdown a piece. Cox managed to break another punt return wide open for another score. The game appeared to become interesting after the half as Buffalo put up 3 scores in the third quarter and opened up the fourth quarter with a FG to bring the score to within a touchdown. But once again, UMass poured it on in the fourth and won comfortably.
UMass has assured them selves an appearance in the MAC Championship Game with one game left to play. Central Michigan travels to Foxboro to attempt to halt this run that UMass is on. UMass and another Michigan team. This should be good!

[Akron] UMass had not one worry on this day. It was evident that the team on the other sideline, Akron Zips, wanted to have nothing to do with the now ranked #21 Minutemen. Both HB Cox and QB Quinn proved to be double threats. Quinn threw for 249 yards and 2 touchdowns and ran for 70 yards and a rushing touchdown. Cox only gained 35 yards on 12 attempts, but he did have an additional 25 yards in receiving, 68 yards on kick returns, and 103 on punt returns. Cox had an amazing day! 2 rushing and 1 punt return TD. That would be your Player of the Game.

[DeKalb] QB M. Quinn took Player of the Game after an outstanding performance. The UMass Minutemen entered this week ranked #24 after a double OT win against Vandy. One thing was certain, this game in no way mirrored that game. Under the passing attack of Quinn, UMass had an explosive second quarter in which Quinn threw 3 of his 4 TD passes. He ended the day with 322 yards through the air. Later in the game the NIU Huskies did close the gap to within a score, but Quinn came back slinging and threw for his fourth TD pass. With less than 2 minutes remaining, SS Thellen returned an interception for a score putting any comeback hopes to rest.
Coach Wilson praised Quinn after the game. "Quinn knows I believe in him. He knows that I don't look at him as a back up that I have no choice to play. This is his team! This is why there are depth charts in place. No matter who goes down, all of my players are prepared."
The Minutemen travel to Akron next on what appears to be quite a simple task. Akron's record currently resides at 2-8.

[Nashville] When the 7-0 UMass Minutemen headed down to Nashville to face the 1-6 Vanderbilt Commodores, the last thing they expected was to see over time. Instead, they went to double over time before adding their 8th win of the season!
With QB Quinn taking over for the injured Pagel, UMass battled Vanderbilt toe to toe in a true gridiron battle. UMass drew first blood halfway through the first quarter with a 41 yard connection from Quinn to Dowling. Dowling had 8 receptions for 162 yards, but would never see the end zone again. Then Vandy struck back in the beginning of the second with a 10 yard pass from Carta Samuels to Boyd. Injuries were a plenty as Cox was one of the key injuries. He was out for the game. Williams joined him later with a hip pointer. Broadnax was called up.
UMass opened the forth quarter with a beautiful drive that gave them the lead with a Levengood FG. It held until 0:18 seconds left in the game. As the Commodores lined up to kick the tying FG, coach Wilson off course attempted to freeze the kicker, but to no reward. This game was going to OT.
UMass lost the toss and Vandy chose to go on defense first. UMass scored on 4 running plays, ultimately resulting in a Broadnax TD. Vandy went for blood right out the gates and responded on a 21 yard TD pass. Another Carta Samuels & Boyd connection. Off to our second over time, Vandy got the ball first. Two rushes for a first down and that was the end of progress. They settled for the FG. UMass took the field knowing that a TD would get them home. The Minutemen attacked with the read option. FIRST DOWN! Again. Second and goal on the 4 yard line. Broadnax took the dive handoff on the following play and found a little crease to fall forward for the touchdown. Oh what a celebration that ensued afterwards.
"This is how football is meant to be played! No team is to be taken likely! I told my players in the locker room that the opposing team has nothing to lose. A win against us would gain them so much more. Vandy played a great game. On this day, we just bested them," spoke coach Wilson after the game. "I was proud of how each player stepped up today. Quinn stepped in for Pagel. He understands he is the leader of this team now! And Broadnax coming through after losing not 1, but 2 running backs." Cox and Williams are expected to be back next week.
Next week the road continues as UMass visits Northern Illinois. Could the Minutemen be arriving as a top 25 ranked team? We shall see.

[Foxboro] Controversy! At this moment Coach Wilson finds himself right in the midst of it after a controversial call for a 2 point conversion in the second quarter to put UMass up 36-14 right before the half. As the fans cheered as both teams went in for the half, all cameras queued in on Bowling Greens head coach Dave Clawson's grimacing stare over at UMass's head coach. "I'm in shock right now! We coach these kids and prepare them for life. What message was coach Wilson trying to put in his kids head by going for a 2 point conversion? I don't take kindly to disrespect. Now I gotta go deal with my team before this turns into something nasty.
When coach Wilson was questioned about it during post game press conference, he attempted to explain. "It was a confusing point for myself. Birt had just intercepted a pass and took it in for the score. My extra point team was heading onto the field when the referees called for a challenge of the play to see if the ball touched the ground before he caught it. After the play stood, I forgot we scored, so I sent my offense out. Not until we scored had I realized that I just converted a 2 point conversion. I was embarrassed and didn't intend to create any situation. I apologize to the college football world for that incident."
Later in the fourth quarter, QB Pagel was injured on a play that was flagged for a late hit. Both benches emptied, but were refrained before any type of scuffle broke out. "Maybe it was payback," stated Wilson. "But if it was, it shows that that program at Bowling Green has total disrespect for the well being of my players, or the players of any other team!" Both teams should expect to hear from the NCAA on the incidents that took place. No punishments are expected to be handed out. Pagel did capture the Player of the Game award as he went 17-20, 244 yards, and 4 touchdowns before the hit. He suffered a broken collarbone and is expected to miss 12 weeks. His season may be over.
Next week UMass travels to Vanderbilt in hopes of continuing their undefeated season as it still stands today.

[Kalamazoo] If UMass entered this season with something to prove, everybody should take notice. They are sending everybody a message! A few weeks after upsetting Michigan's blue and gold team, the Minutemen return to slaughter their Broncos. After a well played first quarter, things got out of hand for Western Michigan. Pagel threw for an easy 5 touchdowns on 16 completions! As for the running game, it's fair to say that UMass had a tandem duo with Cox and Williams both coming through in back field. While Williams gained 83 yards rushing, Cox recorded the only rushing touchdown for UMass. "It's something that I saw coming and it doesn't bother me," said Cox after the game. "We compliment each other well! And it's a great thing knowing that there are 2 people that can provide the results needed!"
UMass is going into their bye week with a 2-0 record in conference play, a win against a top 10 team, and some outstanding achievements so far. One has to wonder what type of attention may be coming their way soon.
