Madden NFL 17 News Post

A new commentary team featuring Brandon Gaudin (play-by-play) and Charles Davis (color commentary and analysis) will replace Jim Nantz and Phil Simms in Madden NFL 17. The team will be able to add new commentary to the game throughout the entire season.

Quote:
Today EA Tiburon revealed the new commentary team that will be calling the games in Madden NFL 17. Brandon Gaudin will be the new voice providing play-by-play, with Charles Davis adding color commentary and analysis. Thanks to unprecedented access to Davis and Gaudin, Madden NFL 17 will ship with the most commentary ever at launch. This year’s game also features the opportunity to add commentary updates throughout the NFL season on Xbox One and PlayStation®4.

Brandon Gaudin will be joining the Big Ten Network as a play-by-play announcer this fall after being the Voice of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets since 2013. Additionally, he has been named the lead college football play-by-play voice for Westwood One Sports, and will also call occasional NFL games for the network. Gaudin will continue to serve as one of the voices for Westwood One’s coverage of men’s basketball, including conference championship week and the NCAA Tournament.

Charles Davis is best known for his work on the NFL Network and NFL on FOX. This past season he could be seen providing analysis each week during NFL on FOX broadcasts, as well as providing extensive coverage of the NFL Draft on NFL Network. Davis is known for his meticulous and detailed knowledge of the NFL, which he will bring to the Madden NFL 17 broadcast booth.

jpdavis, can you find out if there is commentary during replays, and do they describe the play during the replay? and if there is a lot of "dead air" or not? Also has anyone talked about the halftime show and how or if the same commentary will be implemented?

let me see if I can help you out, aguero.

Here are the big points from the Twitter conversation:

-The guy has played at least 8 games. He blocked a punt and the commentary sounded a lot like the gameplay trailer from EA Play.

-He says very few lines are repeated.

-He got an interception and it sounded really authentic because they said the interceptor's name right after the pick.

I played the game for a few hours at EA PLAY yesterday, check Twitter for proof.

The new commentary is legit. Far more chatty, far less dead air. Brandon Gaudin has a presence about him with his voice which reminds me of Brad Nessler from the NCAA games; his delivery is authentic, and he just "sounds like sports" to borrow something someone else said. Davis is solid as a color guy and riffs off Gaudin well, also. There's still dead air in play call if you play slowly like I do - I basically never skip any presentation elements - but it's noticeably less than before.

It's not just pre and post play chatter which is better but the calling of plays in progress as well. Gaudin says the name for just about anyone in the NFL who I played as - from Lucky Whitehead to Jeff Janis to Dontrelle Inman to Marquise Lee. He even called out that Lance Dunbar was a fifth-year player when Dunbar caught a pass and started running with it - "caught by the fifth-year back Lance Dunbar". Gaudin can also cut off Davis if Davis is saying a canned line triggered by the previous play if something big happens - a breakaway run, an INT, etc.

The new commentary and how well it is executed is a huge piece of why Madden 17 feels "fresh" compared to Madden 16, IMO.

Sounds great, what about in replays is there commentary describing replays? Not challenges but in game instant replays.

Are there any gameplay videos with these two in action? Preferably at least a few minutes long. Thanks.

That felt similar in function to before - the commentary would trigger after the play and before the replay, and then the replay would start. Generally the chatter was long enough in duration to get through the replay back to the play call screen. The course of the lines is a lot more conversational and more lively than Jim Nantz and Phil Simms. It feels and sounds better and is more effective.

I did not see or hear any Cris Collinsworth style breakdowns of specific plays in replay, if that is what you are asking.

From what you describe, sounds like Brandon tries to stick to his "radio style," which has me pumped! I love when games try to do this (mlb 2k,) because a lot of the time, radio style pbp is much better and exciting. I've wanted this kind of pbp in a game ever since I started watching mlb when I was 8 in 98, and used radio over video.

Agreed Radio PBP is way more exciting. I have MLB.tv and I always switch the audio to the radio broadcast for any team and watch the game with that audio.

That's what I do for Chiefs games. Mitch "Voice of the Chiefs" Holthus is just awesome

Kanobi, how do you do this for football, your own setup? Gamepass doesn't let you watch live, and I didn't think they had radio overlay like mlb.

Wondering the same thing. Perhaps he just mutes his TV and plays the radio broadcast.

I do this with college games all the time. A bit of a pain to sync it up but is overall much better.
