Re: Ncaa 04 vs Ncaa 06

Been playing 04 and following stuff about 06 lately, so I guess I’ll chip in.

NCAA 04 was not only my first (and only) NCAA game, but the thing that got me into college football in the first place. I at first was skeptical regarding the unfamiliar way the NCAA worked, but quickly grew fond of the rivalries, diverse teams and unique challenges the game presented.

The game has a lot of depth to it, and I really enjoy the physics. Running different playbooks or playing different dynasties always keeps the game fresh, and I do think I’d prefer the 04 recruiting over the other styles. I’ve done so much with the game, from dozens of dynasties over the years to simulations 35 years into the future. (Which does reveal some interesting issues about how the CPU works). I’ve never gotten bored with the game.

That being said…

06 seems like the upgraded version of 04. From what I’ve seen, the gameplay is at least just as smooth as 04, and many aspects of the game are cleaned up (such as conference scheduling and a couple oddities regarding the AI.) 04 is great and will hold a special place in my heart for years to come, but I’ve gotta give the title of the better game to 06, at least from what I’ve seen and heard. 04 just has a couple too many flaws or unpolished areas to keep up, even if minor.

Those PS2-era games are GOATED though. I just played Madden 22 for the first time at a friend’s house a month ago, and the quality of the gameplay in these games compared to what it was in modern Maddens was so, so much better. Crazy, considering that 04 is almost 20 years old right now

NCAA 2004 is my favorite because K-State is ranked like #6 and has the ultimate cheese with Ell Roberson at QB and Darren Sproles at HB.

But I do wonder how authentic some of the he lower division schools uniforms are
Can't find some in google images
A lot of the uniforms are from the season prior, and this is especially true for the 1-AA teams.

So NCAA 2005 is actually the 2004 season, but many uniforms are based on the 2003 look!

I like how it actually tells you the interest level from very low to very high. I typically only recruit from the “interested prospects” list and in 2004 there have been times (5 seasons deep with Tulsa) where there are only 4 guys on the interested list so I have to scour the state lists for guys. Love seeing that 4-star kid with “Average” to “High” that I can potentially flip to Tulsa!

The only weird thing is that I’ve gotten 2 extensions for maintaining program prestige (1-star) despite my record being 15-45 through those 5 seasons. Our best season was like year 1 or 2 where we went 4-8 (4-4). Lol
This post has really aged well...
