Defense, rushing woes continue for WKU

BATON ROUGE, LA (AP)- An off week seemed to be just what the Hilltoppers needed after coming off an embarrassing 34-22 loss to Navy two weeks ago. It sure looked that way within the first few minutes of their game Saturday against LSU when they scored the opening touchdown and took a 7-0 lead. This would be the only moment of glory for the day, however, as LSU put a cajun-style whooping on the Hilltoppers, downing them 58-14 and sending them home with a 1-3 record before this Saturday's game versus Sun-Belt Conference opponent Arkansas State (2-1).

Navy 'tops' Hilltoppers

BOWLING GREEN, KY (AP)- It took a while for Western Kentucky to wake up for their game Saturday. And by the time they did, it was too late. Navy busted out 263 yards on the ground and led a seemingly sleeping Hilltoppers team 24-3 at halftime. The defense would eventually emerge in the second half, holding Navy to only 10 points while the offense began rolling, but it was not enough to overcome such a deep deficit. Navy would go scoreless in the 4th quarter while giving up 12 points to WKU, but still ended up winning 34-22. This loss drops Western to 1-2 on the year.

LEXINGTON, KY (AP)- The Kentucky Wildcats dodged a bullet in non-conference play this weekend, barely sneaking by upset-minded Western Kentucky. The Hilltoppers held a 14-10 lead at halftime but could not overcome the dismal play of their two quarterbacks in the game. Kentucky was able to capitalize on this by outscoring Western 14-3 in the 4th quarter to win 24-17.

BOWLING GREEN, KY- Second-string quarterback Matt Pelesasa connected with tight-end Jack Doyle for 3 touchdowns Saturday, lifting Western Kenctuky to a 28-18 win over Div 1-A newcomer Georgia Southern. The win gives Western a 1-0 record going into their Week 2 matchup at Kentucky this coming Saturday.

WKU's 2011-12 Schedule

The 2011 schedule for the Western Kentucky has several notable games. Western will take on Georgia Southern in the very first Div. I-A game of the season. The game will be shown nationally on ESPN. Western is seeking another win against another Div. I-A opponent as Georgia Southern is beginning their first year as a Div. I-A Independent. The Hilltoppers will go on the road the following weekend to play in-state rival Kentucky, followed by a home game in week three against Navy. Week 4 gives the team a chance to rest and prepare for their Week 5 matchup at #4 LSU in Baton Rouge, LA. Sun Belt Conference play begins for WKU in Week 6 as they host Arkansas State, Weeks 7 and 8 will be played on the road against rival Middle Tennessee State and Florida Atlantic, respectively. Another bye week in Week 9 sets the team up for a Week 10 matchup with projected conference champion Appalachian State, another team entering their first season in Div. I-A. The schedule gets no easier the following week when the team travels to Miami to face Florida International, following that up with a home stretch against both James Madison and Richmond. The team will wrap up Sun Belt Conference play when they travel to Troy to take on the Trojans in Week 14.

The Big East has been stripped of its Automatic Qualifier status because of sanctions put in place after luring TCU into league membership. The league's AQ status will be re-evaluated after the season upon the addition of stronger members due to the departure of Pittsburgh and Syracuse to the ACC.

Conference Alignments will be visible when the Conference Outlooks are released in Week 1.

III. Future Plans/Rules About Conferences
As of 9/26/11, all approved (NOT rumored) conference realignment plans will take affect for the 2012-13 seasons. Meaning- TCU will join the Big East, A&M will join the SEC, etc. I reserve the right to make (realistic) adjustments to the conferences as I see fit and will attempt to utilize the invite system. Thus, a team that has progressively strong years in their lower-tiered conference will be invited to move up into a better conference. This also works in the other direction as well. Geography, previous season records, overall team rating, and program prestige (# of stars a program has) will be the determining factors in conference realignment.

NO CONFERENCE shall have more than 14 members. NO "SUPER" CONFERENCES may be created. Navy and Army must remain independents for at least 3 years before being invited to join a conference, in which case there must be a team to replace each of them in the Div I-A Independents if they both leave. The Div. 1-A Independents must have no less than 2 members at all times.

This section may be amended at any time AFTER the completion of the 1st season.
