In the waining hours of the summer transfer window, the Earthquakes acted aggressively, adding two players to supplement their depth down the stretch of the MLS season. San Jose acquired Kai Herdling from 1899 Hoffenheim on transfer and forward Adam Armstrong of Newcastle Untied on a short loan of the remainder of the year. Armstrong is the second player added on loan from Newcastle to San Jose this year, the other being defenseman Curtis Good.
Additionally, the Earthquakes have signed New England Revolution's Charlie Davies on contract expiry. The 29 year old striker has scored zero goals in two appearances for the New England this season. He will join the club upon the expiration of his current contract on January 1st.
The Earthquakes currently sit at 6th on the league table, and they will compete in the U.S. Open Cup semi-final against Seattle Sounders FC tomorrow.

The San Jose Earthquakes have announced that they have come to terms on a pre-contract expiry offer for Colorado Rapids midfielder José Mari. Mari had fallen out of favor with Rapids management after the team's decline led to some unrest within the locker room. "We are happy to add a proven talent in Mari", said coach Joshua Affonso in a statement Friday afternoon, "he will add veteran leadership and know-how and I look forwards to having him on the squad come January."
Mari has appeared in 18 matches for Colorado during the 2015 campaign, totaling zero goals and one assist.

The San Jose Earthquakes today announced that they have struck a deal to move unhappy striker Michael Fucito to Greek SuperLeague squad Hellas Verona for an undisclosed fee. Fucito, who had scored one goal in nine appearances for the Quakes in the 2015 MLS season, requested a transfer several weeks ago in an effort to gain more playing time.
The move leaves San Jose with a hole to fill at backup striker, though veterans Christian Maidana, Sam Cronin and Yannick Djaló have all been used in that role sporadically this season.

We are now 20 games into an up and down season for the Earthquakes which sees them sitting fifth in the Western Conference with 25 points. Heading into the winter transfer window the Quakes have left us with almost as many questions as answers, personified in many ways by the squad losing or winning two in a row since the three straight losses in May.
The defense, which was speculated to be the weak point of the team has been solid overall, while it has been the attack that has been inconstant. New Coach Joshua Affonso has done a good job over the past 10 games of keeping players fresh, and the results have been mostly positive, especially for veteran players such as Chris Wondolowski and Sam Cronin. Newcomer Brad Knighton has been solid in goal over the course of the season, and though he has just three clean sheets the Earthquakes have allowed more than one goals just five times with him as the starter.
GM Jon Doyle suggested today in his press conference prior to the opening of the transfer window that the Earthquakes will not be looking for any major shakeups, but rather would like to supplement the talent here on the roster and improve depth, especially at the midfield and forward positions. He did, however, not dismiss the idea of adding an impact player at some point during the summer. "We always keep an eye on the market to see what opportunities might arise", said Doyle Wednesday morning, "we feel that we have enough talent on this roster to make a run right now, and if a player comes along that we feel could be the missing piece then I will not hesitate".
The summer transfer market will open today at 2pm EST.
