According to a source within the club, the Earthquakes have placed four players on the transfer list at the opening of the market this afternoon. Defenders Jason Hernandez, Ty Harden and Andreas Görlitz are joined by little-used midfielder Matias Pérez García on the report. Speculation suggests that the team is trying to shed dead-weight salary before moving forward with further roster adjustments heading into the first transfer period for new coach Joshua Affonso.

With new manager Joshua Affonso and his staff preparing for the winter transfer window, starting on January 1st, we have compiled our squad review for the 2014/2015 transition. Below we have given a letter grade to each position, along with some suggestions for how to improve each area of the team.

Goalkeepers (2): D-

Probable Starter - Bryan Meredith
Reserves - Billy Knutsen

With the departure of incumbent first teamer Jon Busch, who had been a key player with the team since 2010, the Earthquakes are left with no experienced options at the position entering 2015. Busch, who is a currently a free agent, made the decision following the season to test free agency but remains in contact with the team and could possibly return for yet another season with San Jose, but if he does not then the team will likely probe the transfer market for an experienced replacement. If they are not able to find one, MLS veteran Bryan Meredith would likely fill the shoes of Busch as the starter. Meredith has just 12 matches experience at the MLS level in his professional career, but the only other option currently on the roster is 22 year old Billy Knutsen, who has never appeared in an MLS match. As it stands, look for the Quakes to add a player via the transfer market and then look to send Knutsen out on loan for yet another season.

Defenders (9): D+

Probable Starters - Victor Bernárdez, Jordan Stewart, Pablo Pintos and Clarence Goodson.
Reserves - Jason Hernandez, Tommy Muller, Shaun Francis, Andreas Görlitz and Brandon Barklage.

The Earthquakes struggled as a team defensively last season, and the first thing that I notice when looking over the roster for the back line is the average age, which is right around 30 years old. For a group that struggled to keep up with the attack of opposing squads throughout last season, yet another year of aging on the legs cannot be a positive thing going forwards. Another negative aspect of this unit is the amount of dead money - with Clarence Goodson, Andreas Görlitz and Brandon Barklage combining to earn 31,000 euro last season while notching just 23 appearances total for San Jose. Both Barklage and Goodson appeared in decent form for stretches during the last campaign, and Affonso plans to use them in some capacity. Still, there is a high likelihood that there will be some shuffling of this unit during the transfer window, especially with Affonso saying during his press conference that he and his staff would like to clear more time for 23 year old Tommy Muller.

Midfielders (10): C

Probable Starters - Atiba Harris, Shea Salinas, Sam Cronin, Jean-Baptiste Pierazzi.
Reserves - Khari Stephenson, Cordell Cato, Yannick Djaló, Tommy Thompson, J.J. Koval, Matias Pérez García.

The Earthquakes are best equipped going forward at the midfield position. This area of the squad boasts nice experience and variance of skills in the starting lineup, and a good mix of veterans and promising youth with the reserves. The Quakes could turn to the transfer market, deciding that more seasoned experience is needed on the bench in the midfield. If this is the case then you may see Thompson and Koval sent out on loan to gain experience as GM Jon Doyle sees both as future first team players. Matias Pérez García is the lone albatross here, with a high salary and only six appearances for the squad in 2014. The disgruntled midfielder will likely be a prime candidate for transfer to another club this winter.

Attackers (4): B

Probable Starters - Chris Wondolowski, Steven Lenhart.
Reserves - Billy Schuler, Michael Fucito.

Undoubtedly the strongest position currently for the Quakes, they boast a Team USA player in Wondolowski and nice depth behind him in Lenhart and Fucito. A name to watch this season will be Schuler, who is just 23 years of age and thought of by many on the staff as a future first team player. There will likely be little movement here during the transfer window as the team allocates it's resources to more pressing areas.

The San Jose Earthquakes announced this morning that they have hired Portland Timbers assistant coach Joshua Affonso as their Manager entering the 2015 season. San Jose, who are entering their 8th consecutive season in the first division of American Football, decided to make a change following 2014 season that saw them finish second to last in the league table with just 30 points (6-16-12). The team issued a statement upon the conclusion of the season that former manager Mark Watson would not be retained after just two seasons with the club.

Watson, who was a former member of the Canadian National Football team during his playing career, took over as the manager of the Earthquakes on an interim basis during the 2012 campaign . Watson was 11-5-3 during his 19 league games as head coach, nearly rallying the Earthquakes to an MLS Cup Playoff berth. His mark 1.89 points per game was tops among all coaches after he took over. Prior to becoming the club’s interim head coach in June, Watson served as an assistant coach to Frank Yallop starting in 2010.[3] He began his coaching career in 2004 with the Canadian national team system where he held assistant positions with the U-20 and senior squads.

Affonso takes over a squad that has lacked identity, and a team that struggled to come together during the latter half of the 2014 season prior to Watson's dismissal. "When I look at this squad, I see a team that has enough talent to compete in this league" said Affonso during his introductory press conference, "I will sit down with my staff and Jon [Doyle] to figure out how to best utilize that talent".

According to Affonso, the first priority will be to enter the winter transfer window with a clear plan of attack. "I would like to see first how to best deploy the players that we do have before we turn out attention to supplementing the talent that is already present on this roster" said the first year manager, "I feel that if we correctly deploy our most talented players on the pitch and put them in a position to succeed from the opening, in addition to adding some talent during the transfer window, then we can move into the midst that we are team that will compete for the MLS Cup next season".

Affonso, a Bay Area native, has not had any experience managing in the higher leagues of American soccer on a lead basis, but has spent the last two seasons working under celebrated Portland Timbers and US Soccer manager Caleb Porter as an assistant. "Though he is not the most experienced manager, we feel that Mr. Affonso has the ability to grow with us as a manager and lead us to unprecedented success" said GM Jon Doyle in a statement Monday, "Joshua has the combination of fundamental ideas and forward thinking suggests that we were looking for to turn the path of this club around".

This will be a blog for my FIFA 15 career mode, throughout which I will attempt to start from the bottom and move up through the ranks of Football into the top tiers. I will be starting during the 2015 MLS season as my local team, the San Jose Earthquakes (who coincidentally have an interim manager at the moment). There will be certain house rules that I use as far as game settings and roster management:

Difficulty - World Class
Half Length - 10 minutes
Rules - All On
Camera - Be a Pro
Sliders - Customized

During my time in the MLS i will be allowed to carry five domestic players on my youth squad to simulate the Homegrown player and also the MLS Superdraft. However, players on the youth squad can only be carried through the offseason and either must be signed to the active squad by the start of the regular season (not including friendlies) or released from the youth squad. Also, players under 18 who demand to be called up by the game must either be released or loaned out and are not eligible to play until they are 18 years old. This rule ONLY applies to the MLS.

Note About the MLS youth players - To simulate the Homegrown Player exception in the MLS, I will be allowed to sign one player to my youth squad per season. That player cannot be called up until they are 18, and players who demand to be called up before that may not play with the senior team, but can be loaned out until they are 18. To simulate the MLS SuperDraft, I will sign four free agents during the winter transfer window, and they must have decreasing abilities and be less than 23 years old.

I use a few stats that I created to help myself quickly evaluate players that will be seen during statistic updates done periodically throughout each season:

WS - Win Shares
WAR - Wins Above Replacement
PER - Player Efficiency Rating
PVR - Player Value Rating

Other relevant information -

Financial Strictness - Strict (60%)
Currency - Euros
Squads Used - Current
First Summer Transfer Window - Disabled

And finally, I have added the Greek Super League from the creation centre.

Anyway, to the football!
