After manhandling the Bengals and taking care of the Jets, many thought the Patriots would blowout the visiting 0-2 Bills. Many were wrong. After electing to receive, Bills starting QB Trent Edwards moved down the field with surgically precise passing, dissecting the Patriots' defense at an alarming rate. Before 3 minutes had elapsed into the drive, Edwards connected with WR Lee Evans for a 22-yard touchdown pass. A quick 3-and-out by the Pats' offense, and Bills K Ryan Lindell was busy adding some field goals to increase the Bills' lead, first from 57(!) yards, and then about a minute later, after the over-eager Pats turned it over on an interception, from 30 yards. This allowed the Bills to present a 13-0 lead over the Pats, all within the first quarter of play. The Pats knew that the Bills could easily run away with this one, if something wasn't done, and done quickly. With a revamped mixture of run and pass, the Patriots found their second wind in the second quarter. A pass-heavy touchdown drive was capped off by Pats RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis running it into the endzone, putting the Pats back within striking distance. However, on the ensuing drive, the Bills somehow managed to get back into field goal range, and once again Lindell came through.

The Pats knew this could have become a true slugfest if they didn't respond by taking the lead with a touchdown, and then carrying that momentum into the second half. That's precisely what they did, fueled by a short pass to Wes Welker who, in his trademark style, turned it into a YAC-heavy touchdown pass. The Pats felt they were firing on all cylinders, and Pats RB Fred Taylor made his presence felt, averaging excellent yardage, and after a check-out at the line of scrimmage, Brady handed it off to Taylor, who burst through the line and took it 67 yards to the house, showing that the old man still had some left in the tank. The Bills never fully recovered from that, and the Pats hung on for the eventual five point victory.

PLAY OF THE GAME:
In a singleback 2-TE set, after reading what appeared to be a rush-outside blitz setup by Buffalo, Patriots QB Tom Brady audibles into a run up the gut for HB Fred Taylor, knowing that if Taylor can break through the line, he will have daylight. And that's exactly what happened:

Comfortable with their depth and talent at the linebacker position despite MLB Jerod Mayo's injury, the Pats' decided to proactively address their lack of depth at the QB position by signing veteran journeyman QB Josh McCown to a one-year deal. Prior to the signing with the Patriots, McCown was the starting quarterback for the Hartford Colonials of the UFL.

It was impossible to not notice how the Meadowlands was roaring with Jets' fans. Having lost a close game to the Ravens in Week 1, the Jets were looking to rebound against the Pats. The enthusiastic crowd undoubtedly fueled the Jets' first drive, featuring excellent precision passing by Jets QB Mark Sanchez and solid running by the one-two attack of Jets RBs LaDanian Tomlinson (showing he still has plenty left in the tank) and Shonn Greene. With a spectacular leaping, hands-outstreched catch by Jets WR and 2008 Super Bowl MVP Santonio Holmes in the back of the endzone, the Jets quickly took a 7-0 lead. The lead wouldn't last long, however, since Brady found Welker in the end zone for a quick touchdown response, and with the Pats' defense subsequently keeping Sanchez in check, the Pats didn't mind settling for multiple field goals and stout defense with a clutch interception at the end by Pats' CB Leigh Bodden to seal the victory. It was not all good news in New England, however, as an injury sustained by Patriots young star linebacker Jerrod Mayo will sideline him for the next nine weeks (broken collarbone).

With the notable exception of an ill-advised under-pressure throw by Patriots QB Tom Brady that resulted in a pick six by Bengals CB Jonathan Joseph, Brady and the Patriots, and WR Randy Moss in particular, absolutely obliterated the Bengals' defense with an aerial attack. Brady finished the day with 357 passing yards, and Moss had an astounding 242 yards receiving. Pats' RB Fred Taylor did his job on the ground, and the Pats' defense intercepted Bengals QB Carson Palmer twice, and forced Bengals RB Cedric Benson to fumble and lose the football.

PLAY OF THE GAME:

Patriots QB Tom Brady shows why standing tall in the pocket and making the throw as late as possible, to give your WR a chance to get separation and even if it means taking a sure hit, pays dividends, as he connects with Moss running far across the field, and Moss uses the ref as a pick to get even greater separation and turn the YAC into 6:
