In stark contrast to Wildcard Weekend, the Divisional Playoffs featured zero upsets. All teams expected to win did so. As a result, the Colts will face off against the Patriots in the AFC Championship game, and the Vikings will clash with the 49ers in the NFC Championship game. The 14-2 Colts lost the regular season matchup against the Pats only by a single point. And although they did not face off in the regular 2010 season, 14-2 Minnesota is heavily favored to beat SF and go to the Super Bowl.

There are rumors swirling around New England that no matter what happens to the Patriots in the playoffs, star wideout Randy Moss won't be with the team in 2011.

Ouch! The Ravens killed the Bengals in this one, intercepting Bengals QB Carson Palmer twice, thanks both times to none other than premier FS Ed Reed. The Ravens move on to face the team they took out in 2009, the New England Patriots.

With a narrow lead in the "NFC Beast" mid-season, the 'Boys hang on to win the division and face division rival Philadelphia in this wildcard clash. "Shady" McCoy leads the league in rushing, but the Tony Romo Show is a top 10 QB in passes thrown during the season.

Falcons (9-7)
Saints (9-7)
Sunday, Jan 10, 2010 4:15 PM

The reigning Super Bowl champs avoid the dreaded trend of missing the next year's playoffs after winning the big one, but finish tied with division rival Hot-lanta with 9-7 records. Strangely, Falcons QB Matt Ryan has thrown more touchdown passes than Saints QB Drew Brees during the 2010 season, but the Saints possess the more prolific rusher, with RB Pierre Thomas having nearly twice the yardage of Falcons RB Michael The Burner Turner.

The team tied for second best record in the NFL, and second most prolific scoring powerhouse, 14 & 2 Minnesota, and the upstart 10-5-1 Niners await the outcomes of these wildcard match-ups.
AFC East

New England Patriots
Having gone undefeated in a repeat performance of 2007, it's Super Bowl or bust for New England.

Miami Dolphins
The Fins fall just short of .500, at 7-8 and one tie, and will look to improve next season.

New York Jets
Despite some considering them the favorites early on in the AFC East, losing star QB Mark Sanchez to an injury midway through the season, backup QB Kellen Clemens could not play at the same level, and the Jets finish at 6-8-1 and miss the postseason.

Buffalo Bills
The Bills tie the Detroit Lions for the worst regular season finish, at 3 and 13. Ranking low on offense and defense, the Bills will need more help on both sides of the ball next season.

AFC North

Cincinnati Bengals
The Bengals finish with an impressive 11 and 5 record, with being 7 and 1 at home. The Bengals will host division opponent Baltimore at home in the Wildcard round. QB Carson Palmer finishes in the top 10 in the NFL in passing yards.

Baltimore Ravens
The Ravens finish with a respectable 10-6 record, looking to triumph over Cincy whom they split the season matchups with, 1-1. QB Joe Flacco finishes in the top 5 in the NFL in passing yards.

Cleveland Browns & Pittsburgh Steelers
Both the Browns and Pittsburgh end the season just shy of .500 at 7-9, highlighting the toughness of the AFC North.

AFC South

Indianapolis Colts
Ranking third in the highest-scoring offense in the NFL and having gotten within a point of ruining New England's perfect season, Peyton Manning & Co. are right on schedule with a 14-2 record.

Tennessee Titans
The Titans manage to crack .500 with a 9-7 record, but miss the playoffs.

Jacksonville Jaguars & Houston Texans
Highlighting the toughness of another AFC division, both the Jags and Texans finish the season right below .500 at 7 and 9. MJD finishes 3rd in the league in rushing, but it proves to be not enough to carry the Jags.

AFC West

Denver Broncos
Coach McDaniels doesn't disappoint Broncos fans, winning (just barely) the AFC West with an 11-5 record, compared to the Super Chargers' 10-6 finish.

San Diego Chargers
"San Diago" has a top-3 QB in Phillip Rivers, and a top-3 receiver in VJax. Their wildcard match-up against none other than division rival Denver will undoubtedly collect huge ratings.

Oakland Raiders & Kansas City Chiefs
For Oak-town and KC, it's "continue to rebuild," as they finish 7-9 and 5-11, respectively.

After squeaking past the Indianapolis Colts with the smallest margin of victory possible (one point), the Patriots defeated all other regular season opponents, resulting in a repeat performance of 2007 in another perfect 16-0 season. Pats QB Tom Brady shattered numerous passing records on his way to new milestones, with the intra-game records coming entirely out of the 66-6 blowout of the Green Bay Packers on December 19th. Brady has surpassed:
  • Norm Van Brocklin's most passing yards in a game (554 versus Brady's 588)
  • Joe Kapp's most touchdowns in a game (7 versus Brady's 8)
  • Dan Marino's most passing yards in a season (5,148 versus Brady's 5,551); and
  • his own 2007 record for most touchdowns thrown in a season (50 versus, now, 57)
The Patriots have, of course, clinched the BYE from the Wildcard round on to the Divisional Playoffs.

Week 7 match-up (Pats vs. Chargers):
After reading blitz pre-snap, Patriots QB Tom Brady shifted protection accordingly, hot-routed WR Randy Moss (positioned in the slot) on a streak, and threw a deep bomb for a touchdown

Week 6 match-up (Pats vs. Ravens):
Patriots QB Tom Brady exploits a glaring hole in the middle of Baltimore's defense and connects with a wide-open Randy Moss who, thanks to a solid block by Pats WR Brandon Tate, makes the yards-after-catch into a touchdown

Week 4 match-up (Pats vs. Dolphins):
Near the goal line and after snapping out of a tight I-form, Brady sees the Dolphins' linebackers converge over the middle, covering New England's TEs well, but leaving FB Sammy Morris open in the flat, and thanks to a solid block by Pats HB Fred Taylor on the blindside blitzer, Brady has enough time to pass it to Morris, who muscles his way in for 6

Week 3 match-up (Pats vs. Bills):
In a singleback 2-TE set, after reading what appeared to be a rush-outside blitz setup by Buffalo, Patriots QB Tom Brady audibles into a run up the gut for HB Fred Taylor, knowing that if Taylor can break through the line, he will have daylight. And that's exactly what happened

Week 1 match-up (Pats vs. Bengals):
Patriots QB Tom Brady shows why standing tall in the pocket and making the throw as late as possible, to give your WR a chance to get separation and even if it means taking a sure hit, pays dividends, as he connects with Moss running far across the field, and Moss uses the ref as a pick to get even greater separation and turn the YAC into 6

Even though the Steelers had a 3-5 record, the Patriots know the Super Bowl XLII champs are still a threat with a very talented roster on both sides of the ball. The Patriots would need to correct their offensive miscues from the Browns game if they did not want to lose to the Steel Curtain. And indeed, they did. In dramatic fashion. Pats post their highest score this season, in a huge blowout of the Steelers. Pats move to 9 and 0.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Patriots QB Tom Brady. Finished the game with 6 touchdowns and 354 yards passing, with 34 completions on 45 attempts.

Nobody really expected the 2 and 5 Browns to pose much of a threat to New England. However, due to overconfidence, a tenacious Browns defense, or perhaps a combination of both, Patriots QB Tom Brady was intercepted three times in this one. Nevertheless, because of the Browns' persistent offensive struggles, the Pats still managed to pull out the "W" here.

The clash of the undefeated titans didn't exactly live up to its hype. Both quarterbacks threw careless interceptions early on, and after the Vikings settled for a field goal on an otherwise good drive, this game looked like it'd be a defensive struggle until late in the first quarter, when in the redzone, Patriots QB Tom Brady finds WR Randy Moss on a screen in the flat, and with good WR-blocking, Moss runs it up 8 yards for the first touchdown of the game. The Pats had an easier time than expected containing Minnesota's offense, as for whatever reason Minnesota did not utilize star RB Adrian Peterson much in the first half. The Pats soon took another offensive trip deep into the redzone near the goal line, Brady lobbed it to big-bodied TE Rob "Gronk" Gronkowski for the second touchdown of the game. The Pats would carry that momentum in the second half, when Patriots WR Wes Welker, serving as the Kick Returner, returned it 91 yards for the third Patriots touchdown. The special teams score helped cement the Patriots lead and, in effect, took Peterson effectively out of the game, because it forced QB Brett Favre to take shots deep downfield to catch up, which he simply could not accomplish consistently enough.

The New England Patriots week 8 match-up pits them against the also-undefeated Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings have no injuries, RB Adrian Peterson is top 5 in rushing yards in the league, QB Brett Favre is top 10 in passing yards, and WR Percy Harvin is top 10 in receiving yards. Defensively, the Pats have a statistical edge thus far in the season, but there's no denying the talent of the Vikings' D.
Facing their toughest challenge yet, the Patriots went to "San Diago" to take on the 5-1 Chargers. Even though Chargers veteran WR Patrick Crayton was out with a dislocated hip, the Chargers still had the best record of the teams the Pats had faced thus far, and perhaps also is the most talented. San Diego QB Phillip Rivers leads the league in touchdown passes, with 15. However, New England had a clear strategy going into this one - contain/pressure Rivers, double-cover WR VJax, otherwise focus on TE Antonio Gates, and force WR Malcolm Floyd, an under-performing RB Ryan Mathews, and RB Darren Sproles to keep pace with Brady's high-octane offense and win the game. The strategy worked, as even though Rivers, VJax, and Gates all had good outings, the Pats' offensive firepower proved to be excessive.

Despite having lost to (a very good 4-2) Denver Broncos in the prior week 5, some expected 3-2 Baltimore to hand New England its first "L" of the season. Despite having CB Dominique Foxworth out for several weeks with an injury, the Ravens' depth and level of talent at so many different positions is unquestionable. Their rushing attack destroyed the Pats in the 2009 NFL playoffs. However, that was then, and this is now. Having likely used week 5 (Pats' BYE week) to scout the Ravens, the Patriots came strong out of the gates, containing Baltimore and making it to the redzone on the first couple of offensive drives. The Pats know that if you consistently settle for field goals in this game, you are likely going to lose, but the Patriots defense mixed up and disguised their schemes well, and usually made the right call when Baltimore decided to try to run it. A tenacious defense allowed New England's offense to have sufficient opportunities and pressure-less rhythm to eventually reach paydirt late in the second half, and with momentum on their side, they never looked back. Pats pitch a shutout, and move to 5 and 0 on the season. Their next opponent shall be the 5-1 San Diego Chargers.

The Pats' defense got physical in this AFC east match-up. On the opening drive, Dolphins RB Ronnie Brown tried to break a tackle and over-exerted himself in the process, opening himself up for a big hit by Patriots OLB Tully Banta-Cain, forcing the ball loose. Pats FS Brandon Meriweather swooped in quickly to retrieve the available football, and ran it just 27 yards for the score. The Pats' D would provide an encore performance in the second half, when pressure on Fins QB Chad Henne would cause a fumble, returned by the Pats for a touchdown. The physicality would come at a cost, however, as Pats WR Randy Moss was injured and sidelined for most of the game, and MLB Gary Guyton joins Pats MLB Mayo as being sidelined for a few weeks. Despite the opportunity to win via pure ball-control offense, not content with a two-possession lead and bitter over an interception early in the game, Patriots QB Tom Brady would march the Pats back down the field late in the fourth and punch it in again, compliments of Pats FB Sammy Morris, sealing the victory by providing a three-possession lead with less than two minutes left in the game. Chad Henne & Co. never found the endzone in this one, and after having opened the season beating the Bills, the Fins lose to the Vikes, the Jets, and now, the Pats, and go to 1 and 3. The Pats remain undefeated.
