With almost as much fanfare as a space shuttle landing, Coach Tietsworth was welcomed to the Cougars family Sunday. In his first press conference, Tietsworth laid out the groundwork of what was to come. "We will execute in all 4 aspects of football, offense, defense, special teams, and, most importantly coaching."
Signing a 3 year, $1.6m contract with a team coming off a 4-8 season, Tietsworth looks to breath some life and ferocity back into a storied program. "It's time to get to work!"

After several years away from the football field, former Alaska State head football coach Shannon Tietsworth has returned. With the sudden and unexpected dismantling of their football program at Alaska State, Coach Tietsworth was left with a huge hole in his life. He reluctantly stepped back into the retail life he grew into, but always longed for more pigskin time. Alaska State University made the difficult decision years ago to no longer field a football team. With the closure of the military base which brought in talent from across the country, plus the extreme costs of travel associated with running the program that saw significant drop in enrollment, the program was stopped amid a very successful period that saw multiple National Championships, jumping into Power 5 Pac-12 conference, and numerous conference title that followed. But the money just wasn't there.
Enter the much troubled and struggling Arkansas State Red Wolves. Coach stepped back into FBS football, and in 1 year guided an average ASU team to a 6-6 record, and a win in the Citrus Bowl over Florida International. Tietsworth established himself as a guy that can turn around a program quickly, and the Houston Cougars noticed.

For the second straight year, the Mountain West Conference Championship game came down to Alaska State(12-0, 9-0) versus Air Force Academy (8-4, 5-2). ASU sophomore kicker Nate Clark was nailed 5 FG's on the day and the ASU defense shut down the Air Force offense, limiting them to 82 total yards on the day enroute to a 50-0 romp and the 4th straight conference title for the SnowCats.
Offensive Captain: TE Ben Palmer, 6-4, 228lb senior from Albany, Oregon. Ben was in one of the first recruiting classes for Coach Tietsworth. Ben moved to the Anchorage area with his twin sister, Mary, who is also enrolled and is a Criminal Justice Major. Ben is the schools all-time leading receiver at tight end, and may end this season as the schools all-time leading receiver. 138 career catches for 1572 yds and 13td. Ben has hopes of playing in the NFL, but also is interested in becoming a pastor back home in Albany, Oregon.
Defensive Team Captain: SS William Davis, a 6-3, 221lb junior from Red Springs, NC. William, or Billy, left the sandy beaches and warn weather of the south east for the oft cold and blustery Alaska. Why you ask? Well, Billy says he grew up not knowing winter very well, and on an official visit, he spent more time building a snow fort and making snow angels than he did touring the Alaska State facilities. Billy was hooked on the campus for the weather and football. Billy was a huge recruit, as he was a 3 time all-state nominee for both track and football. Billy will return with a degree in Environmental Science, and hopes to return home and start his own tobacco farm.

Alaska State has officially stepped into the national stage with a huge win on the recruiting trail. They raked in the #3 overall class, amd here are some of the big names:
B.J. Stewart, Athlete - Stewart visited the campus only one time before giving his nod to the SnowCats. Stewart brings a huge upside to the offense, most likely as the eventual successor to Shaun Peterson at RB.
Dustin Carroll, Athlete - Dustin ironically enough has family in Anchorage, therefore the choice wasn't too hard for this 5-star recruit from Illinois. Carroll projects as a wide receiver.
Malcom Leak, DE - Leak is a solid speed rusher who can step in and gain experience from Senior Justin Johnson. Coaches are hoping to get Leak's weight up to about 260lbs in order to help out in run support.
Jimmy McCarty, Guard - McCarty looks like a potential freshman starter right out of the gate. He is a little lean at 280lbs, but coaches rave about his agility and quick feet. Last years guard tandem gave up too many sacks.
David Kennedy, Tackle - Kennedy already has the size at 6-5, 315lbs to step in at either tackle spot right away. Look for him to land the RT slot in spring ball.
Other notables: Brian Pratt, SS Stephen Schmidt, DT James McLaurin, MLB all look to be top players in their positions in the future.

After a 12-2 season, its inevitable that changes could come to ASU. These aren't bad changes, but rather successful ones. First, defensive coordinator Jimmy Barnett has accepted the head coach position at the University of North Carolina. The Tarheels made a change after a disappointing 4-8 season. Barnett coached the SnowCats into the #2 ranked defense in the NCAA this past season.
On the offensive side of the ball, Dan Frazier couldn't pass up the offer to coach at Kent State in the MAC. Frazier will be going back to the school he first coached at as a graduate assistant.
Brandon Dixon, former head football coach at the University of Buffalo and Nebraska alumnus, is rumored to have been offered the DC position. Dixon may bring his 4-3 defense to ASU, which may prove challenging given current personnel.
After saying goodbye to their offensive coordinator, Dan Frazier, Chad Baldwin, former OC at Temple, has been formerly offered the same position at ASU. Baldwin, a Naval Academy graduate, bring a physical multiple-read gameplan that should fit well at ASU.

Markell Cooley has left his mark on the Alaska State Football Program. Cooley amassed 11,287 yds, 79 td, 35 int to go along with 3,158 yds rushing and 39 td on the ground. Thats 118 total touchdowns in 4 years at the helm... Not bad work at all. Cooley's success has opened the door to higher profile recruits taking interest in the ASU program. Cooley's transition to post football life may include a shot at an NFL roster. Most draft experts rate him as a round 6-7 pick, but Cooley is aiming higher. "I believe I can bring another dimension to a teams offense." - stated Cooley. "Just need that shot."

Maaco Las Vegas Bowl #13 Alaska State (12-1) vs. UCLA (8-4) Line: UCLA by 5
The first meeting between these two teams will take place in Las Vegas, Nevada, in the 2016 Maaco Las Vegas Bowl. Alaska State brings their stingy defense, ranked #1 in points allowed, and #2 in total yards allowed, into Las Vegas to match up against a once high powered UCLA offense which has been decimated by injuries to both starting QB Chris Brown and starting RB Darius Bennett. Brown, before being injured, threw for 32 td and over 2700 yards. He is replaced by Junior signal caller Cole Turner. Turner is more athletic and a much better runner than Brown, but doesnt have quite the accuracy. UCLA will rely on two freshman running backs to bolster the running game. The UCLA defense on the other hand boasts a solid defensive front 7, with 3 of the best linebacker groups in the Pac12. Look for them to put a lot of pressure on the average Alaska State offensive line. UCLA also has a very strong and physical secondary that should be able to pin down the Alaska receivers.
Alaska State will need to get their running game going early, and look for the defense to set the tone early, trying to force the early turnover. Senior signal-caller Markell Cooley enters his last game in an Alaska State uniform, as do 13 other seniors that forged the original freshman class at then newly founded Alaska State. Running back Shaun Peterson will potentially have a difficult day finding holes against the excellent front 7 of UCLA.
Four quarters was not enough time to decide this rematch of regular season foes. The game featured over 500 rushing yards combined between the two teams, and featured 3 players running for over 100 yards a piece. The lead changed hands 5 times in this one, but the Alaska State SnowCats prevailed in double overtime 44-37, to take their 3rd consecutive conference title.

The Mountain West conference title game will feature a rematch between the Air Force Falcons (8-5, 6-2) and the Alaska State SnowCats (11-1, 8-0). The SnowCats claimed the first victory on their home turf 36-21.

To date, the Alaska State football program is 37-13 overall in their 4 years of playing in the Mountain Conference. They secured 2 conference championships, and a 3rd seems inevitable. The 'Cats are 2-1 in bowl games. The downside...they are only 1-3 against top 25 opponents. 4 games versus ranked opponents in 4 years. Although they pushed now top ranked Florida State to the brink of defeat, a loss is a loss. What is the point of all this? Well, people surrounding the program are talking, talking about the level of play in the conference, and the level that Alaska State is looking to achieve. "We prepare every week, and we all go out there and play to the best of our ability, and we look to come out with a win every game, no matter who we play", stated Markell Cooley, starting QB.
One option that is being considered is a move to another conference. The other option...scheduling of ranked opponents coming into the season. But the downside being that a new, up and coming program like Alaska State doesn't offer a competitive game for some top tier programs. (Tell that to Florida State).
As it stands right now, nothing is being discussed, but the potential is there and we could see a major announcement coming sooner than later.
