NHL 13 Preview

When it comes to getting their game down pat, the EA teams up in Vancouver, Canada, are masters. Especially the NHL folks; because once you get your own hands on NHL 13, you won’t want to put down the controller.

By introducing momentum, and by being the first team-sports game to implement real-time physics in skating, NHL 13 is already an early favorite for sports Game of the Year – yes, even above Madden NFL 13 and all of its improvements.

Momentum allows you to grab total skate control over your player. The momentum is different for each player in the game and is based on his ratings, height and weight. A perfect example shown at E3 compared NHL 12 with NHL 13. When you’re on a full-speed breakaway towards the goal, in 12, turning was easy; you could stop and change direction at the drop of a dime. But in 13, you can’t do that anymore. Your momentum will cause you to sort of glide through the turn, causing you to go further than you want which could ultimately lead to nothing but a sloppy possession.

Also, when on offense, last year in NHL 12, the defender could easily keep up with you and your exact speed while skating backwards. It gave the defense an unfair advantage and was one of the few gripes gamers had last year. Now with momentum, the puck holder can use his speed and agility to get around the defender. In turn, this affects defense as well. You can’t skate backwards and dominate the competition anymore. You need to be able to know when to skate forwards and when to skate backwards. For those who aren’t used to hockey’s strategy, there is an option in the settings to have backwards skating on or off.Goalies are also less stagnant, as it seems they can move each of their limbs when attempting to block a shot. In general, goalie play is said to be much better thanks to the new skating physics.

When tying together the new momentum and skating implementations you would think something else has to improve. That something else is the AI. The NHL 13 team spent more time on AI this year than they have in the past three years combined. Each improvement I mentioned earlier that is at your disposal will be the way the AI plays against you.

Also, the AI is constantly learning how you play. NHL 13 wanted to get away from last year when some users figured out how to exploit the AI. Now the AI constantly pay attention to how you play. If you like running up the right wing to go in for the kill, they’ll figure it out. If you play an aggressive, offensive based 1-3-1, the AI will figure it out and changes may need to be made.

Also new are the way strategies work. Each coach has his own strategy, which he takes with him wherever he goes. Potentially you could see the Kings playing like Pittsburgh depending on who their coach could be.

As you can tell, Be A GM mode is getting a make over. Though the majority of the details are said to be coming out in the next couple of weeks, some information was available. The biggest bit of information given, though, was how the mode will be making its way online. You’ll be able to play with your friends and manage your team from an iDevice if needed. You can also watch the new and improve AI battle each other while watching your team, but still having control. You’re able to choose when to shoot the puck, to substitute, to switch lines, etc. You’re also able to draw up your own plays outside of the gameplay and then watch the AI perform that play.

There are less than six weeks left in NHL 13’s development cycle, so the team still has plenty of plans and finishing touches to put on what could possibly be the Sports Game of the Year.

I hope the NHL13 game is better even yet this year. Granted I keep buying every year but from all the interviews and promises of being better 1 can only hope it delivers better than the new NCAA 13 I'm playing. Good game and all but for the most part is the same game play with a few more scores from around college thrown in. The improvements sound amazing for the new NHL series for this year. Must be impressing someone as it keeps racking up the awards and I'm sure they come easy. The pricing is the same every year which is good. Can't come up with anything off hand I would change about it. I'll be buying yet again this year.

The thing that bothers me most about the lack of info on NHL 13 is not the absence of gameplay videos, expected at this point, but the lack of in-depth community impressions. Nothing beyond the community day preview of the skating engine with physics taken out and a few potential AI tweaks which were not gamechangers (other than more neutral zone pressure) to seasoned NHL veterans even after playing for 10 hours straight at community day.

Meanwhile I can find huge in-depth reads about all the Fifa 13 changes and how much they do or do not impact gameplay. What people are calling the most polished pre-alpha build they have ever played of the game and generally positive stuff. I feel the NHL team isn't showing us the goods because the A.I. and physics will disappoint.

The community has a specific date that they can talk about certain things. The date is the reason why there is a lack of information on the game. Once that date hits they can say most of the info on the game. You will see plenty of community feedback and interaction from everyone who went to the community event.

I'm interested to see what they did with new commentary lines. I hope they added a little more depth in Be a GM mode. They added a nice touch last year where they had stat popups showing the top 10 leaders in goals, hits, assists, etc. It would be nice to see them go further now and add some commentary along those lines.

I'm playing my FIFA 12 Manager Mode right now, I'm playing a team for the second time this season. Right at kickoff Martin Tyler made reference to our last game against this team, how we dominated them, and what effect that might have on our attitude about this game.

Things like that would be nice to hear in NHL 13.

Right on! To me the best commentary in video games are the ones that go back to previous games against the same team your playing and talking a little bit about what happened. For instance lets say Parise scored 2 goals in the opening game of the year against the Avalanche and then the second meeting there should be a stat overlay with his name and then stats against Colorado from the first meeting. Then Bill and Gary would say he was an impact player in the first meeting of the season etc. etc. They do it for the playoffs but it would be cool to see it in season to. Just little things like this keep the game fresh and entertaining. I'm sure it's hard programming commentary and stat overlays like that but if MLB 2k can do it, I think just about anyone should be able to. It will actually be interesting to see what the commentary entails for all EA games when they come out with their ground breaking commentary programming thing.

Yep Gopher, it'd be kinda neat to hear in the commentary, or at least see in a pop-up what your season record is vs the club your about to face.

this is what is missing. to hear commentary about the last game or season record or records in the past years (specially if ur facing the team in the opposite conference). but just a pop-up will do for me

I have not purchased an NHL game in a few years, not that I didn't enjoy my last one but I just didn't think the differences were enough to buy a new one. With the improved AI and skating this may be the year I buy one again.

Is. There. A. Season. Mode? Control of schedule for all games to play or sim and control of all rosters. Please try to find out.

As everyone knows after last years abortion of a game I have been pretty critical, but it's good to know there have been favorable hands on impressions.

Look at what NBA 2k12 did commentary wise. EVERY sports game should copy that.

Agreed that I would love to see presentation of that quality in every sports game but if I know anything about EA it's that I know they will never go above and beyond expectations. Granted, EAC appears to be heading in the right direction with what we've been hearing about this year but they have always been a couple steps behind in presentation. Hopefully we'll see it get completely overhauled in the first year or two of the next generation of consoles but I'm not holding my breath.
