Madden NFL 13 Preview

So… You've heard about this new Madden NFL 13 physics engine have you?

Well, I'm here to tell you the infinity engine is indeed legit. It's downright unbelievable actually. Call it a "fresh coat of paint on the same old game" if you want to but I love it.

I played a couple of games last night with some various members of the media and came away very impressed. Sure it's not perfect, you will see limbs getting bent in painful directions occasionally, even see a body slide or rotate a little awkwardly, but all in all, the new Infinity Engine the Madden team has implemented is unbelievable.

I must have seen at least 60 different animations in what little time I had to play with Madden last night, but every one of them made me smile. Getting the right touch on passes never felt so good. If there was one thing I could complain about, it's the offensive and defensive lines. They really need to add 400 animations to those guys next year, to go along with the 400 new ones that were added this year for the receivers. While it is a little better this year, the patty cake stuff is really getting old. I will have to analyze it more to see if strength and ratings really matter down there in the trenches.

Running backs explode through holes and you can actually see them putting their head down to attack a defender on occasion. While watching another gamer playing Madden in the cube next to me, I noticed he was running with Stephen Jackson. As he flipped, while rolling on top of some players on the ground, he stuck his hand down and took off running for some extra yardage. Momentum, for the most part, works as advertised. Bigger players will push smaller players backwards, players will jump and get flipped into awkward positions. When players collide, you will see helmets and necks snap back.

I never played with the Cowboys, but I did roll with the Ravens and Redskins (did I just say that?), just to get a feel for the defense of Baltimore and the RG3 effect for the Skins. He's pretty quick and has an accurate arm, which is very dangerous, as many Madden fans know. The Ravens defense seemed to be everywhere and I mean everywhere. Swarming to the ball at all times. The Steelers defense was no slouch either, as I found it difficult to find any open receivers or run against them at all.

Players don't just get wrap tackled, they will trip over other players feet, on occasion as well. This one time, in band camp… Oh wait, this one time, I flattened a corner, but as I ran by him, he shoestring tackled me, by bringing his arm up and tapping my foot, causing me to trip. It was the wildest thing I ever saw. A couple of times I went into replay mode and instant replay wasn't an option. Guessing it was just an odd bug.

I'm still not seeing many penalties at all and definitely not seeing any pass interference calls. I'm thinking they implement penalties more next year, as they continue to tweak the Infinity Engine. I'm not seeing double teams on pass rushers, but it was only two games and I didn't pay that much attention to it. If you are worried about seeing over the top tackles happen all of the time, I didn't see many of them during the two games I played, but will get plenty of time, over the next three days to find out.

I didn't go into any other modes, just strictly gameplay. I'll be capturing a ton of videos of Madden and other games this week and will post them as I have time.

I thought the Infinity Engine was used by Black Isle RPG's?

Madden is defense optional and has been that way for too long. Where you able to play effective defense without gimmicks?

Looks interesting but I think we should give credit where it is due. Thank you to Natural motion and Backbreaker for forcing EA to get off its hind quarters and implement physics into their game.

This.

After I watched some the videos showing off the Infinity Engine, the first thing I did was thought about Backbreaker and how the Infinity Engine probably wouldn't exist without that game's creation.

This is why I'm mad at 2K for just giving up and not making another attempt at a football game after 2K8. A fully-featured game with generic players would have created enough buzz to get EA's attention.

Backbreaker wasn't even a fully-featured game, but it brought forward one of the most innovative additions in football gaming history. Every football game (or sports game for that matter) would be judged on whether it has real-time physics or not.

Just imagine if they work on footplanting, line interactions, penalties, and WR/DB interactions for 14, that game would probably be the best sports title of the year. I cant wait for Madden 13, never been this hyped for a Madden game.

How real is that. EA might not say it openly but they are clearly implementing this because of the innovation introduced by others. Case in point, DBs and Backers having to see the ball to react on it is one of the features in 2k5, fact not fiction. My only care for the monopolization of any sports license is and has always been the lack on innovation that is wrought from such deals due to the lack of competition.

People who played APF2k8 and enjoyed it (Like myself who still plays it more than Madden) miss the small things, like sideline interactions with off field players and great commentary. But, when a non NFL title is released even it's it's Gawd Awful(Backbreaker was nearly unplayable) we will need to show some support because the concepts in some of these other titles are actually very good.

Any who, my interest in Madden this year will be to see if this addition plays well. I can say that the changes to NCAA 12 feel nice and fast and I plan to pre-order this game as well.

I can't remember when I was this excited for a Madden release. I have been hard on EA for the lack of innovation and stale engine in Madden. I am very surprised that physics calculations will be implemented before next gen consoles and this definately shows EA is making game changing strides to bring Madden back to past form.

You don't think Backbreaker's Euphoria engine influenced EA's decision in any way to create a physics-based engine of their own?

I have no definite proof either way, but in my opinion, I think EA was definitely influenced by that. If not directly, I'm sure the over pouring of fans asking for such a feature played a factor. And guess where the fans got that idea from?

"I'll take Backbreaker for $500, Alex."

Good write-up, It was a bit dissapoiting to hear about the battle in the trenches but this is something which they can vastly improve next year with the new engine and I actually mean it, I'm not just using the phrase like others have every year.

On the whole, everythng sounds great. I'm defintely going to buy this Madden and this in of itself will make the game so much more realistic. Whenb you add that to the new passing and read and react defense you have a recipe for the best football game of this generation.

The long, weird pauses that don't occur on Sundays.

But anyway, the Infinity Engine looks really good. I like how certain players who are caught up removing themselves from the pile occasionally stumble, looks cool. Although I feel like we'll have to get used to another form of the run game, more difficult in fact. Seems as though you wont be able to simply sprint through the gut anymore... have to wait for the hole to open up, with patience. I approve.

I dunno CR, its been years we been playing "eye behind my head" madden and been asking for something like this ever since. When BB showed off its engine and what it was aiming for, most of us here were clamoring for EA to get that into madden ASAP. It never happened and we were told it would take too long to implement such a feature or engine into madden.

I applaud their efforts for madden 13 and am quite excited to get my hands on the demo, but we gotta face the facts that society and marketing go hand in hand in what consumers love that drive products today. When one car came with a CD player, all of a sudden ALL cars started coming with them aswell regardless of the cost at the time.

Stuff thats getting into madden now, should have been standard anytime you create a sports game period! Now I would like to know about penalties since I think someone will be touching on the zig zagging running and whatnot existing or not from what we seen so far!

As a Dynasty fan I am so jealous that Madden has Infinity but NCAA does not. I had decided to get Madden instead this year but then they announce that I cannot import draft classes.

Oh well, at least Madden 14 will have **ALL NEW** draft class import functionality

Infinity engine looks good, it looks like I still see some animations but for the most part, I saw alot of it at work on the long previews @ e3. Still pumped and ready to buy.

Infinity really is looking good, there are a few bugs here and there but they must be fixing them by release.
