SIXER GM GRIFFIN HAS HIS WORK CUT OUT FOR HIM

by Drew Stone

Tyler Griffin has had tougher jobs than his current one. "My first job was a summer job painting homes in Denver," said Griffin. "We would have to get on roof tops in 95 degree weather and the roof would get so hot that it felt like your shoes were melting." With apologies to his summer time gig, his current job may prove to be a tad more difficult. While he may not have to climb heights to paint an attic, he will surely have to get down and dirty to get the 76ers out of the NBA basement. "I realize that it will not be an overnight fix, but we do have some players with a ton potential and that is enough to get me excited about where we are headed," exclaimed Griffin. He specifically mentioned the tremendous upside of young post players Joel Embiid and Nerlens Noel as well as the talent of point guard Michael Carter-Williams. With the acquisition of David West, Griffin feels that he will provide that veteran leadership and be a role model to Embiid and Noel. However, if you spend any time with Griffin you will soon find out that he is a realist. He didn't sugarcoat his expectations of this years edition of the Sixers. "We hope to be competitive every single game. I understand that we will take lumps, but I do believe that you can learn more in a loss than in a win," said Griffin. "Yet I would love not to learn as much as we have in previous years." Owner Terrence Gambin has repeatedly said that he has hired the right man for the job. "I believe in what Griffin can do for this city and Sixer fans around the world," said Gambin. "He will roll up his sleeves and accomplish what many think to be impossible." He must because if he doesn't, Sixer fans can make his new job so uncomfortable that he will need to get back on top of a roof to avoid the angry mob.

THREE SAY GOODBYE, THREE SAY HELLO

By J.A. Adande
ESPN.com

Philadelphia -- In a move that proves any job in the NBA is a good job, three free agents signed on to join the train wreck that is the Philadelphia 76ers. Rookie C Isaiah Austin, swingman James Anderson, and PG Jordan Farmer seach signed one year contracts for a collective total of $13 million. The Sixers released Shavlik Randolph, JaKarr Sampson, & Furkan Aldemir to make room for the trio. In all, I believe it's a move that get the Sixers to 18 wins instead of 15. Gentlemen I hope the check is worth it.

SIXERS MAKE TWO TRADES, ADD DAVID WEST

Philadelphia - The Sixers traded veterans Luc Mbah a Moute to the Pacers and Jason Richardson to the Celtics. In return they added David West & Shavlik Randolph and they also swapped 2nd round picks with the Pacers. Adding David West puts a veteran presence on the team that can teach young bigs Joel Embiid, Nerlens Noel, & Henry Sims how to be professionals and the ropes of the NBA. The moves did help the Sixers shed some salary, they now have $30 million in cap room.

We interrupt this program to bring you live to the introductory press conference of new Sixers GM Tyler Griffin:

Terrence Gambin: ...can come in here and provide us with a clear direction and help us reach the NBA pinnacle. We have a lot faith in the ability of Tyler. After talking with him over the past week to gauge his interest in joining our franchise as the Director of Media Relations, I found him to be a perfect candidate to be the General Manager. Initially, I tried to hire Tyler as the assistant GM, but Sam was against it, so I made the tough call to relieve Sam of his duties. To be clear, Sam didn't do anything wrong, but I feel that Tyler can be special and we needed to get him on board as soon as possible. Without further ado, ladies and gentlemen Tyler Griffin.

Tyler Griffin: I'm gonna make this short and sweet and then take a couple of questions because I have a lot of work to do. I'm excited about being in Philadelphia. I believe that we can compete for a championship within the next four years, but it is important for us to pinpoint & develop players. I believe that we have some great pieces to build around, but we must do all we can to develop them. So now I'll take a couple of questions.

Chad Ford (ESPN): Tyler how well do you think the Sixers can do this year?

Griffin: I don't think that it is realistic for us to compete for a playoff spot this year, but I expect us to be improved from last year, as our players are a year more mature. Also having the third pick in the draft allows us to bring in another talented piece. I believe the future is bright.

Stephen A. Smith (ESPN): Are you mentally prepared to lose over and over and over again?

Griffin: Mentally I'm not ready, so I physically have to be great at my job in order to avoid that. I don't want to be daily fodder for Skip and you on First Take because we aren't winning. Ladies and gentlemen thank you for your time, but I have to get to work.

We now return you to Maury.

Sixers axe Hinkie, tab Griffin as new GM

Philadelphia - Sixers owner Terrence Gambin did it all in one fell swoop. In a surprise move Gambin fired General Manager & President of Basketball Operation Sam Hinkie and hired Orlando Magic Director of Media Relations Tyler Griffin for both roles. The 25 year old Griffin inherits a rebuilding team coming off an historically bad season with a roster full of young players. Hinkie leaves on a sour note as the firing came as a complete shock to him. "We followed the plan that we crafted with the expectation that we would struggle mightily. I guess Mr. Gambin became impatient. I wish the new guy all the luck in the world." Hinkie offered no further comments as he left the teams practice facility. Gambin could not be reached, but the Sixers have scheduled an introductory press conference for Wednesday at 10:00 am.

Giants Sack Broncos 31-25

by Mike Klis

East Rutherford, N.J. -- Rookie DE Johnny Busey enjoyed a bunch of success in high school and at the University of Oklahoma, but he had never had a day like this. On Sunday, Busey sacked Broncos QB Jay Cutler five times. "He is in line for a raise after what he did," said Broncos Head Coach Jason Griffin. "Never have I had a game like this, but for it to come in the NFL is truly special," said Busey. He wasn't the only Giant to get to Cutler. In all, Cutler was sacked 12 times to push the total to 22 of the number of sacks he has taken. that puts Cutler on pace to be sacked 88 times which would easily eclipse the record of 76 times set by David Carr of the Houston Texans. Griffin, who was visibly upset, said, "If our offensive line doesn't improve drastically, we are going nowhere this season. We have to get better." The running game was non-existent also. Ozzie Jones ran for nine yards on 15 carries. For his part, Cutler had a big day throwing the footballas he passed for a season high 341 yards on 20-29 and finished with a 117.1 QB rating. Rookie Tra Campbell continued his impressive play with 6 catches for 142 yards and a td. The defense wasn't stellar either. They did hold Marion Barber to 59 yards on 22 carries, but they surrendered 360 yards passing and three touchdowns to Eli Manning. WR Steve Smith had 7 catches for 92 yards and two td's. "We felt that we could pass on them despite the big names that they have at cornerback, because they still have two rookies starting at safety," said Manning. Both teams will be on the road next week as the Giants travel to Minnesota and the Broncos travel to Pittsburgh.

Freddie Coleman: Welcome back to Gamenight brought to you by State Farm. Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there. I am your host Freddie Coleman and I am joined by Dat Dude Marcellus Wiley & former All-Pro Eric Allen. We are recapping some of Sunday's action as we are almost finished with week 5. Let's take a look at the Jaguar-Broncos game. The Broncos held a 28-7 advantage after 3 quarters and were able to hold on for a 28-21 victory. Eric what stood out about this game for you?

Eric Allen: Well the thing that stood out for me was the matchup of Brandon Marshall against his former team. I figured that he would have a huge game despite the Broncos having such vaunted cornerbacks. I was wrong. Marshall was held to 22 yards on two catches and was never a factor in the game. I forgot he was on the field at times. Marcellus, what caught your eye?

Marcellus Wiley: For me it was Jay Cutler. He dissected the Jaguars defense for 262 passing yards, three touchdowns and more importantly no picks and only one sack. He controlled the game and showed why some peopel have put him in that elite class of quarterback. He still has to show more consistency for my taste. He hit seven receivers on his 19 completions and he may have found his #1 guy at receiver. Rookie Tra Campbell had eight catches for 121 yards and two touchdowns. This team is starting to look scary.

Coleman: I was impressed by the Bronco run defense yet again. They have given up a total of 146 yards rushing in four games this season for an average 36.5 yards a game. Last year this defense was porous on the ground and in the air and with some key free agent signings and draft picks they have done a complete 180. They are looking really good. Marcellus, what is this defense doing differently? Is it just the change in personnel?

Wiley: The change in personnel is obviously key. Adding Peppers, Asomugha & Suggs is a definite upgrade, but new Defensive Coordinator Chuck Bresnahan has instilled an aggressive system that attacks the offense. You heard of bend, but don't break? His system is break, break, break. Normally when you have an attacking defense like that you are vulnerable to giving up big plays. However, with their secondary and with their sure tackling linebackers, this hasn't been an issue through four games. Amazing.

Coleman: Eric do you think this Denver team is for real?

Allen: I think they are. If they limit turnovers, they have enough talent to win the AFC West. I was amazed that Asomugha, Peppers & Suggs signed with Denver, but having all that cap space was key. Also Head Coach Jason Griffin has proven to be a great talent evaluator. His draft knocked it out of the park. And just think, they have three 1st rounders, three 2nd rounders, four 3rd rounders and four 4th rounders in next year's draft. This team could be scary for years to come. But the key is still Cutler. As he goes, so go the Broncos.

Coleman: Rookie RB Ozzie Jones had another 100 yard game & Nnamdi Asomugha picked off his league leading fourth interception this afternoon. Second year WR Dexter Jackson was the Jaguars star of the game with seven catches for 85 yards and two td's. The Jags travel to division rival Tennessee next week and the Broncos travel to New York to play the Giants. This is Gamenight brought to you by State Farm.

Rookie Sets Record; Raiders Drop to 0-4

by Don Banks
si.com

Oakland rookie QB Joe Kain has thrown for 300+ yards in all four games this season, but his three interceptions helped lead the Raiders to their fourth straight defeat. Kain has had an impressive start throwing the football, leading the league in yards, td throws and unfortunately for the Raiders interceptions. Three picks and a lost fumble led to 17 Bronco points in a 38-22 defeat. Jay Cutler threw for 256 yards and two touchdowns. he also led the team in rushing with 52 yards on six carries. Rookie RB Ozzie Jones omly gained 43 yards on 28 carries, but rushed for two td's. The Bronco defense continued their dominance against the run allowing only 38 yards. They also had four sacks to go along with the four turnovers. Oakland first year coach Gary Hammermill is still encouraged by the direction his team is heading. "Joe (Kain) is experiencing some growing pains, not unlike what Peyton Manning went through his rookie season, but you can see the progress. I know that he will lead this franchise to many victories in his career here. I just want to get the first one soon," said Hammermill. The Raiders will host the 1-3 Texans next week, while the Broncos will take on the 3-1 Jaguars in Denver.

Maybe He Knows What He's Doing
When the Broncos hired a relative unknown in Jason Griffin there was outrage expressed by fans, NFL insiders, coaches, columnists, even some in Griffin's family. Barack Obama mentioned him in a political speech. I chose not to be as reactionary, but to put trust in the instincts of Pat Bowlen, although my knee jerk reaction was to write a scathing column on the demise of the Broncos. After a 5-11 season in his first year, Griffin still had a very low approval rating. The Broncos couldn't run and Jay Cutler looked lost without Mike Shanahan. Dre Bly would have been cut if not for the $12 million cap hit it would have cost the team. He only had a Pro Bowl season & led the league with 9 interceptions. In the offseason Griffin traded Brandon Marshall and there was talk that Champ Bailey, D.J. Williams, Bly & Cutler were all up for grabs. None were moved despite being shopped. Griffin spent a combined $95 million on Nnamdi Asomugha, Chris Gamble, Terrell Suggs & Julius Peppers to try to re-energize the defense. They wrestled away the offseason championship from the Washington Redskins who have been irrelevant for the entire Dan Snyder regime. However, they did something opposite the Redskins. They stockpiled draft picks, not give them away. They counted on rookies, not just aging, overpaid veterans. Now they are 2-0 heading into their bye week having just destroyed the Chiefs 41-17. The outlook of this season looks great, but the future looks even brighter. The Broncos have 3 first round, 3 second round & 4 third round picks in next year's draft. Ozzie Jones looks like the answer at RB. Marshall hasn't been missed and Cutler is well, Cutler. We will learn a lot about Griffin & the Broncos this year. They have a four straight road games & then five straight home games to end the season. How will they fare with a team that isn't used to winning lately. We'll soon see. Bailey, for one, is a believer in his coach. "Jason understands the game & instills confidence in the players. I trust his decisions because I have seen how much work he puts into this," said Bailey. Good enough for me.

Found It!!!
Broncos Discover Running Game in Rout
by Jeff Legwold

Kansas City -- Ozzie Jones has been compared to Barry Sanders so often he sometimes answers to the name. "I've heard it since high school and was fortunate enough to meet him at Oklahoma State. It's a lot to live up to, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't trying to be better than him," said Jones. On Sunday, Jones certainly looked just as good as Sanders rushing for 143 yards and three touchdowns on 22 carries. Jones broke 13 tackles and rushed for 73 yards after contact. His breakout running game also assisted Jay Cutler in having a big game. Cutler was 16-24 244 yards and a touchdown. Although he played a good game it didn't start out well for Cutler. He threw a pick that was returned 100 yards for a TD by Patrick Surtain on the Broncos first drive. Head Coach Jason Griffin was pleased with the overall performance of the team. "Ozzie's play was big for us. He impacted not only this game, but he gave our future opponents an element that they have to prepare for, that we haven't had in my tenure here," said Griffin. The defense sacked Kurt Warner five times and rookie MLB Freddie Bates picked Warner off. The defense continued it's stout run defense and has now held it's first two opponents to 59 yards rushing in two games. "We had a hard time moving the ball. A ton of credit goes to their defense for that," said Chiefs coach Herm Edwards. Both teams have a bye week next week. The Chiefs will host the Ravens on Monday Sept. 28. The Broncos will host division rival Oakland on Sept. 27.

Jason Griffin: I was proud that we fought to get the victory over a tough Baltimore Raven team. We still have to manage to find a running game and stop putting our QB in tough spots. the line protection wasn't up to par and that has to cease. Jay can't go through another season like he had last year. That's unacceptable. I was pleased with Nnamdi. He jsut continues to justify his big contract with both his play and his leadership. Julius was also huge for us as he kept pressure on Kerry Collins all day. I was also pleased with the number of different receivers that managed to catch a pass, I think it was eight. that's good distribution of the ball. As we prepare for the Chiefs, I still want to focus on finding a running game. Ozzie Jones showed some flashes and was inches away from breaking two long runs, but we haven't produced yet. I know it's only one game & the Ravens have a formidable defense, but to contend for the division we need to achieve more balance. Stopping Larry Johnson for Kansas City will be key for us. As a team the Chiefs rushed for over 100 yards against the Redskins, so we need to be aware of that. Also it is their home opener and we all know that Arrowhead is like the Swamp or Death Valley. the fans will be lubricated and will give Kansas City that little extra boost & we have to be prepared for that. I'm looking forward to the challenge. I have time for one question.

John Clayton, ESPN: Coach is Jay Cutler on the hot seat. there were numerous reports quoting a Bronco assistant that you had to be talked out of benching Cutler after his third interception. Can you comment on that?

Griffin: I knew I shouldn't have called on you John. (Laughs) Those reports are accurate. I sat Jay down and told him that I will not sit by and watch his mistakes cost the other men on this team a shot at a victory. he understood where I was coming from and assured me that he would win the game for us. He then promptly led us on a game winning drive. Look when you have a QB like Jay Cutler or Brett Farve, you have to live with brilliance and sometimes brilliant f#*k-ups. We just hope for more of the former and less of the latter. Jay knows that he is the key to moving this franchise to another level. Now I wish Jay would get as much credit as Brett Farve for being a tough son-of-a-gun. He has taken a beating since his days at Vanderbilt, but he keeps getting up. I know that he has the support of everyone in our locker room, but he, like everyone else isn't above reproach. I just had to reproach him Sunday (laughs). Thank you for your time ladies and gentleman.

Despite Sloppy 4th Quarter, Broncos Edge Ravens In OT
by Lindsay Jones

Baltimore -- Before Sunday's season opener Coach Jason Griffin said he wanted to see what thype of character and resolve his team had. After four plus quarters of football he may have his answer. After taking a commanding 26-7 lead into the fourth quarter, the Broncos surrendered 23 straight 4th quarter points before scoring a touchdown with 22 seconds left to force overtime. Denver had the only posession of the extra frame as they drove the ball down the field and set up Jason Elam's game-winning 35 yard field goal for a 33-30 victory. The Broncos had a uneven performance, but free agent acqusition Nnamdi Asomugha starred. Asomugha had 3 interceptions and returned one 55 yards for the games first points. Jay Cutler, on the other hand, did little to inspire confidence in Bronco fans as he matched Asomugha's 3 int's with 3 picks of his own. Cutler was responsible for a td pass and a 12 yard touchdown run at the end of the game that forced overtime. The running game was only able to produce 49 yards and continues to be a sore spot for the team. Rookie WR Naji Warner caught 6 passes for 71 yards and a touchdown. He was among 8 different Broncos to record a reception. Defensively the Broncos dominated the first three quarters before falling apart in the 4th. Along with Asomugha's 3 picks, DE Julius Peppers forced and recovered a fumble. the Ravens were led by Kerry Collins 354 yards passing and 2 td's. Defensively safties Kenny Phillips (2) and Ed Reed (1) were able to intercept Cutler. As a team the ravens defense also sacked Cutler 5 times. "I have to do a better job of putting this team in positions to win and not make it harder than it has to be," said Cutler. The Ravens host the Browns next week, while the Broncos travel to Kansas City.
