Jason Griffin: There are going to be 31 press conferences around the country regarding the draft and 31 coaches are all going to tell the assembled media that they had a great draft. They are going to say that they took a major step in improving their franchises. They will speak about the number of immediate contributors that they drafted. This will be the 32nd one like that. I am so excited about the draft they we were able to pull off. Ozzie Jones has a chance to be a starter from day one. He is an explosive back in the mold of Barry Sanders and as an Oklahoma State alum, I am excited to get a fellow Poke into the fold. We added some depth at the WR position, which was needed even before we traded Brandon Marshall. Finding some safety help in the later rounds was key for us as well. I'm also excited about Donovan Patterson at tackle. I feel he is a diamond in the rough. So is Eric Harper who is a beast at defensive tackle. Our D line coach says that he reminds him of Warren Sapp. I feel that we can make make a move in the AFC West with the help of some of these young fellas. Thank you so much for your time.

The Denver broncos signed CB Chris Gamble to a 4 year $16 million deal with a $2.5 million signing bonus and no incentives. The signing begs the question of what is Champ Bailey's future in Denver. Only time will tell.

The denver Broncos are trying to set an NFL record by giving up no points as they sign LB Terrell Suggs to a 3 year $24 million deal with a $3.5 million signing bonus & no incentives. Suggs commented that the earlier signings of Asomugha & Peppers made him consider Denver even though he had no intentions of entertaining the Broncos previously.

The Denver Broncos continued their free agent spending spree by signing DE Julius Peppers formerly of the Carolina Panthers. Along with CB Nnamdi Asomugha the Broncos have signed two of the biggest free agents. Peppers' deal is a 3 year deal worth $22 million with a $5.5 million signing bonus & no incentives. Coach Jason Griffin said that that he is pleased with the signings, but the Broncos are no where near finished with their spending spree.

Denver Broncos signed former Raiders All-Pro CB Nnamdi Asomugha to a 5 year $43 million deal. The contract includes an $8 million signing bonus and has no incentives. Asomugha & Champ Bailey should make a great CB tandem.

Sorry fellas but this is the first time I have had the Ozzie Jones path and I want to start drafting. So i will give a wrapup of the season. Broncos finished 5-11. Only Pro Bowl players were Dre Bly (9 int's) & Elvis Dumervil (13 sacks). Jay Cutler stunk 52.2 QB rating 14 td's 26 picks and he took every snap. No running game to speak of. leading rusher was Aveion Cason with 484 yds. 4 td's 2.9 avg. Brandon Marshall was pretty good 67 rec. 1189 yds. 6 td's. The Patriots went 16-0 again, but the Colts defeated the Eagles in the Super Bowl 31-10. now that you are all caught up. Lets get to the offseason.

Rich Eisen: We take you out to Broncos cam where we are joined by Broncos Head Coach Jason Griffin. Coach how has it been after two weeks?

Jason Griffin: Thanks for having me Rich. It has been a good ride thus far. We just need to continue to improve every day, but I am as excited today as I was when I accepted the job.

Eisen: What has been the most surprising aspect of the job thus far?

Griffin: Without a doubt it's the demands on my time. Show's like NFL Total Access (laughs) are constantly trying to get the inside scoop. But in all seriousness, the time spent in other avenues besides actual coaching are incredible. When I was a high school coach I spent about 30 hours a week coaching with no media obligations. Now I spend 60 hours coaching and about 15 hours fulfilling media obligations.

Eisen: So are you overwhelmed by it all?

Griffin: The fact that I'm not married helps because I know that the time constraints puts stress on families. Really I'm trying not to become burnt out on the profession, but at this stage I am bright-eyed & bushy tailed. I have a ton of energy for this and I will continue to work until I bring Denver another championship.

Eisen: Good luck Coach. We hope to hear from you soon.

Griffin: Thanks for having me.

First Half Onslaught Charges San Diego to Easy Victory
by Jarrett Bell

Denver -- On their second offensive play QB Phillip Rivers found TE Antonio Gates streaking down the middle of the field and hit him for a 60 yard touchdown and the rout was on. San Diego rode Rivers' three touchdown passes to a 31-7 halftime lead and cruised to a 31-13 win over the Broncos. Rivers threw td passes of 60, 32 & 58 yards. The last two to WR Vincent Jackson. RB Ladanian Tomlinson also ran in a 3 yard run for a td. The Chargers had 410 yards of offense and limited Denver to 39 yards rushing. They also held a 2-1 time of posession advantage over the Broncos. Jay Cutler passed for 203 yards 2 td's and a pick. The td's went to WR's Brandon Marshall on a six yard pass and Glenn Martinez on a 30 yard pass. San Diego coach Norv Turner was excited about the win. "Anytime you can win a division game on the road that is a big win," Turner said. A visibly frustrated Jason Griffin was not as excited. the Broncos head man spoke of going back to the drawing board. "We have to go back to basics. The lack of a running game is making our offense too predictable," said Griffin. The 2-0 Chargers host the New York Jets and the 1-1 Broncos host the New Orleans Saints on Monday Night Football.
Tony Kornheiser: Welcome back to PTI, we are joined by rookie head coach Jason Griffin. Coach how are you?

Jason Griffin: I'm good gentlemen. Thanks for having me.

Kornheiser: Let's get right to it. Coach you are undefeated after your first game so are you ready to announce your retirement on PTI and go down as the greatest coach in NFL history winning percentage wise?

Griffin: (Laughs) I'm not sure I'll be mentioned with the greats if I retire today. I need to strengthen my resume a little. Although I may have surpassed Mike Ditka with Monday's victory. (Laughs) In all seriousness, I was elated to get the first game out the way and to get a victory was amazing. But despite that wonderful feeling all it guaranteed was that we won't go 0-16 this year.

Michael Wilbon: But 1-15 is still a possibility Coach. (Laughs) How are you gonna improve your offense?

Griffin: We need to improve, but I like what I saw in practice earlier today. We had a crispness that we had been lacking lately. I was disappointed that we had trouble moving the ball but the optomist in me thinks that we have nowhere to go but up. I'm putting pressure on our offensive line because they are the key to us becoming a great offense.

Kornheiser: Can Jay Cutler survive all the hits that he is taking?

Griffin: He probably can't. We have to do a better job of protecting him & finding a ground game that he can depend on. Our team needs Jay in order to be effective so we must find a way to help him out.

Wilbon: Brandon Marshall winced when you were first hired & went to the paper to say that a trade may be the best thing for him. How has the relationship been between you two?

Griffin: Brandon has been wonderful. We have very similar personalities and I know that deep down he wants to win as do I. We met shortly after my intro presser and I had a great conversation with him. Since training camp he has been one of the most dedicated professionals on the team.

Wilbon: San Diego is the favorite in your division and you have them this week. Are you willing to guarantee a victory?

Griffin: I'm not gonna go that far, but I do expect a good competitive game. The talent on that team is unreal. You have a hall of famer in Tomlinson & a great QB in Rivers. It really is a case of pick your poison.

Kornheiser: Last question Coach. Eric Mangini is the Mangenius. Bill parcells is the Big Tuna, what should be your nickname.

Griffin: (Laughs) Wow, that came out of left field. I would like to be known from here on out as Employed. I think that it has a nice ring to it.

Kornheiser: (Laughs) Thank you for your time coach.

Wilbon: Thanks a bunch Coach.

Griffin: Any time fellas. I really enjoyed it.

Elam FG Clips Raiders in Overtime
by Jeff Legwold
Oakland -- The Denver Broncos edged the Oakland Raiders 10-7 in the season opener for both teams. Jason Elam kicked a 19 yard field goal in overtime to push the Broncos to the win in an offensively-challenged game. The Bronco defense starred as they accounted for 4 interceptions & 7 sacks. Dre Bly picked off two passes ans Elvis Dumervil terrorized the Raiders offensive line in racking up 3 sacks. Raider QB Andrew Walter finished his miserable night with a 3.0 QB rating as the only Raider points came on two safety's and a field goal. The Denver offense didn't fare much better as they only had 207 yards of total offense. Raider head coach Lane Kiffin said, "This is one of the worst offensive showings I have ever been a part of. We must improve or we are going to have a hard time winning a game this year." Bronco head coach Jason Griffin was pleased at the outcome, but also voiced concerns over his teams offensive performance. "You always want the win, but if we can't give Jay more time & open up holes for our running backs, our defense will have to keep having superhuman efforts like this just to keep us competitive," said Griffin. Next week the Raiders travel to kansas City while the Broncos host the Chargers.

Coach Griffin: I believe that we made some progress during the preseason and I'm looking forward to the season. We got out of the preseason very healthy and that was our top concern. The offense is shaping up a little, but we have to find a consistent running game to some pressure off Jay Cutler. On defense we need to get more pressure on the quarterback & create turnovers. I feel that we have some of the pieces in place to do that, but we haven't displayed consistency. I'll open it up for questions.

Lindsay Jones, Denver Post: Coach can you comment on the constant rumors of players like Cutler, Marshall, Champ & D.J. Williams being available for the right price?

Griffin: We intend on keeping those guys in Bronco uniforms for a very long time. They are the building blocks for our organization. We feel they give us a great chance to compete for championships in the near future.

Mike Klis, Denver Post: How do you feel about making your coaching debut on Monday Night against the Raiders?

Griffin: I am really excited and anxious to get it started. A division rival on a Monday Night doubleheader. the last game of the week. I'm full of anticipation. The rivalry between the Raiders & Broncos is a special one & to be in the midst of the crazy fans in Oakland will be really special.

Jeff Lewgold, Denver Post: What are your expectations for this season?

Griffin: I believe we can contend for a division title, but we have to be more consistent. I feel that our talent level is good enough to surprise some teams this year. I think it's going to be a fun ride. So I suggest that everyone strap up & enjoy the ride. In the words of Barry Switzer, WE'RE GONNA DO IT BABY!!!!

Preseason was simmed. Broncos finish 1-3.
Posted on February 18, 2011 at 05:51 PM.
Tony Reali, host: The Denver Broncos traded starting center Tom Nalen to the Baltimore Ravens today for a 2nd round pick in the 2010 draft. They also traded TE Daniel Graham to the Saints for a 2010 3rd round pick With rumors of Champ Bailey, Jay Cutler, D.J. Williams & Brandon Marshall all being available for trade the question is are the Broncos giving up on the season? Woody?

Woody Paige, panelist: As the one guy close to the story I can tell you that the Broncos are giving up on the season with an eye on the future. The trades today were of a 37 year old veteran and a mediocre TE that is making nearly $6 million this year and has 4 more years left on his deal. I think Coach Griffin is just trying to eliminate guys that won't be around for the long term & try to get something for them.

Kevin Blackistone, panelist: Yeah, but Woody you have an inexperienced Coach who is making his first go around in the league. On the surface it looks like the Broncos are giving up on the season which isn't a crime, but the new coach boldly predicted that they could win the division at his introductory presser. Now his actions seem to be a contradiction of his words. I don't think the Bronco fans deserve this. This coach seems to be way over his head.

Tim Cowlishaw, panelist: When the cowboys were 1-15 there was a chorus of people saying that Jimmy Johnson was way out of his league. He traded away what very little talent they had fo draft choices that became the foundation for a 3 time Super Bowl winning dynasty. With that being said, I don't believe that Jason Griffin is Jimmy Johnson. he seems to be lost as to what he really wants to accomplish. I can't see this ending well. the fans who complained that the Broncos should have hired Bill Cowher, don't fret it looks like Pat Bowlen will get another crack at it next off-season after he fires Griffin.

Jackie Macmullan, panelist: It's interesting that you mentioned firing because www.firejasongriffin.com was established earlier this week. I believe that Griffin will prove he can't build a team much the same way that Shanahan proved he couldn't. It's why you need a general manager & a Coach and not one guy filling both roles. It doesn't work.

Reali: Woody you get the last word.

Paige: The old Parcells line is that if he has to cook the meal he should get to shop for the groceries. As the only person on this show to have an in-depth interview with Griffin, I can say that I am impressed with him. He reminds me a lot of Mike Tomlin and the players have bought into what he is selling. I think he will be successful and I'm going to say he will lead the Broncos to a world championship in 3 years.

Cowlishaw: That's crazy.

Paige: Mark my words. Griffin gets it.

Coach Griffin: Good morning ladies & gentlemen. We are on the eve of the start of training camp. We have signed 4 of our 6 draft choicws, with Josh Morgan & Ryan Clady being the two unsigned picks. There is an excitement in the air that every team feels at this time of year. We feel like we have a team that can compet. This will be an important training camp for us as we implement our system and get our players up to speed. I feel good about several positions and I have concerns about others. Jay Cutler reported to camp in great shape & Brandon Marshall is also in tip top shape. I like the new line that we have assembled. I am looking for them to gel as a unit over the course of the preseason. the secondary is a concern for us with John Lynch and Champ Bailey a year older. We need to add some quality depth in that area. I'm excited about the coaching staff as they have shown a hunger this offseason. Overall I'm looking forward to the next two weeks of practice before the preseason opener against the Texans. The depth chart will be released later this afternoon. Thank you for your time
