Madden NFL 18 News Post

There have been a few community members that are prominent in the Madden Ultimate Team world asking their Twitter followers for constructive feedback on what they would like to see changed gameplay wise in Madden NFL 18. I'm here asking the same thing, but to the OS crowd.

Two rules - keep it constructive (and in a positive nature) and respect other's feedback (even if they differ from your own).

Other than that no opinion or idea is too big or too small.

Have at it.

For example, if it's raining/snowing, I would like to see more drops by the WRs, some slips when the player changing direction, etc.
This already happens and they need to honestly get rid of it IMO because they do not distribute it evenly. Doesn't make sense that only offensive players, namely WR's slip and fall, but the guys covering them never slip and fall? Just get rid of it IMO.

Since quite a few people have discussed options to separate simulation style and arcade style (NFL Gameday had this forever!) maybe also separate the passing structure. For arcade mode, keep the traditional 5 buttons for receivers. For simulation style, maybe use some sort of right analog movement. Maybe slide the stick up for a normal pass, click R3 for a bullet/low pass, flick up for a lob pass. Of course, this may require something like the infamous passing cone which might not make this option popular. However, it would place a lot more into the skill of passing the football. This isn't my lifelong dream, so feel free to tell me it's a stupid idea, but since the devs may read this from time to time, it could provide some interesting discussion for them to look at.

Most of the changes I want to see are in CFM. But I am not expecting any of them to be touched.

1. Full coaching staffs. There is no excuse that we still have just one coach when the real NFL has a head coach, coordinators, position coaches etc. And each one should have some effect on their position group. To go with this there should be a bidding pool when coaches get fired, similar to how NCAA used to handle it.

2. Redesigned free agency. Include RFA's, 5th year options on rookie contracts. But the biggest change I would like to see is not being able to see who offered a player a contract or how many fictional points you have to reach to sign him. It's something so simple.

3. Actual Draft. As we experienced this weekend the draft is a huge event watched by millions. We need something more than the same boring screen with Trey Wingo and Adam Schefter randomly speaking about something no one cares about.

4. Full relocation. Build on what NHL 17 did but expand it with custom logo's. Relocation is something that is becoming a reality with 3 teams now on the move in the league. I would love to see a system that allows you to completely change your logo/uniforms but still use your old uniforms as "throwbacks" similar to the Titans with the Oilers unis.

5. Fully editable draft classes and reworked draft logic. Right now basically you don't need to scout 2nd round picks because you know those players are all going to be busts.

6. GM AI. I am sick of seeing teams drafting the same position year after year. At one point in one of my franchises, the Colts had Andrew Luck as well as 3 QB's they drafted in the first round. And that isn't the exception, too often in the game teams draft the best player instead of positions they actually need.

7. An actual offseason. Give me something more to do. Previous Madden games had a full combine. Previous sports games have allowed you to actual play with the incoming rookies in all star games.

8. A recap show ala 2k5. Something that ties the entire league together. This is one of the biggest issues I have with playing a franchise solo. I really don't care about what happens in the rest of the league because I don't have time to read through lists of transaction, go through multiple menus's just to see standings or read random tweets from people I could care less about. Give something that actually informs me about the league I am part of it. Even the old Madden 2005 Radio show would be awesome. It amazes me two games from 2005 had something so unique that has never been seen again.

9. Reworked scouting. This is one of the biggest ones for me, it is still too easy to build a powerhouse team through the draft. Scouting should show you measurables, combine stats and strength's/weakness of each player. All of the ratings and letter grades should be hidden from the user. This would create actual draft busts and a more interesting draft. This would tie into your staff, the better your scouts the more detailed your scouting reports.

I go with something unique during the offseason, but personally, I want no part of the call in radio show. It was repetitive and the voice was nauseating hearing all the time.

Otherwise, good list from a CFM POV.

I'm one that will button press through a HT show because my games are 1 hr 15 minutes as it is from opening KO to end of the game w/o replays, etc...., but I feel there should be an option for it for people.

I button press w/pregame and HT and between quarters on the NBA game.lol

Yeah, see, I often button through pre-game and HT shows as well. But, for me, I would love a video generated weekly wrap-up show in CFM. U can choose to button through this as well. I understand what u say in terms of time. But, for me, a 2 min show that shows highlights from the rest of the league would be 'fun' to watch, weekly. To actually 'see' the superstars performing would add so much more immersion to a CFM. And, somehow tie in some heisman updates and whatnot, again, with real footage (this may be tough, gotta get school uniforms, maybe?). I don't know u, personally, but I really think that anyone that wants more immersion in CFM would enjoy this feature if it existed and they gave it a shot. For me, I play 2 hour games, so I feel u on time, but 2 min per game? I think that's fair. And, for me, I would like it for when I haven't played for a week or 2 (real life). Fire up the CFM, watch the 2 min weekly wrap up first thing, and see a highlight of someone dominating, or a good team doing poorly, and instantly remembering, 'oh yeah, Dallas sux this year, and the bears are actually competing, lol. Then, play my next game. Sometimes, I might play a game, and instantly check the weekly wrap up to see who's up/down. Yeah, for me, I WANT this BAD!! Lol.

qbs need some love...

1. an ability to use a cadence.
realistic audible signs and signals.

2. more movement around from qb pre snap shouting instructions.

3. more audibles and hot routes from cpu on offense and defense...the nfl is cat an mouse game...adjustments are made nearly every play...but not in madden.need to do this without cpu knowing the play we are running.

4. since right now i could be as effective with jamarcus Russell in madden 17 as i would be with ARod. its time to add a pass meter. accuracy ratings, if your feet are set or on the run, and if you are under pressure determin how wide your green zone ( similar to mlb the show pitching meter) would be. this would finally add a challenge to playing qb an not make every single throw.

5. give us the ability to create our own uniforms, at least 2 and 1 alternate. and ability to design aspects about our stadium. mlb the show, nba 2k, and nhl 17 all have this. Madden needs to get with the times.

6. more realistic footplanting and launching off those planted feet.

7. remove the button mini game on defense, using the R stick for different moves is more realistic. not button mashing. cmon EA.

8. awareness should be tied to players with the ball reaching out for first downs on their own.

9. ability to throw swing passes and not immediately run out of bounds. and when throwing to a wr who is facing you. they should trigger an animation of immediately turning up field. otherwise we press up on l stick and they go up in the way they facing which is the WRONG way.

10. realistic trade value for players. i offered the bears andrew luck, a current 2nd round pick, and nexr years 4th round pick for Jordan howard and they declined. top tier qbs should have that value.

11. commentary took a big step this year, be replay camera angles are still the worst ive ever seen, nothing like you see on tv. and that halftime show, pathetic compared to 2k5..still.

12. get rid of xp and drive goals. not sim in anyway, will force players to try an throw for a td in goaline situation to complete a goal vs trying to run..or vice versa. what we do shouldnt be dictated by the game. go back to potential ratings and a normal progression system used by all other sports games.

Top gameplay changes I want to see: I'm not exactly sure where to start or how to lay this out but..

1.) CPU PLAYCALLING - I've read into breakdowns of giving CPU custom built playbooks. I'd like to see this be a feature built in so there is no required workaround.

I've read into DeuceDouglas' deep dive on the CPU only utilizing 15% of the playbook. That NEEDS CHANGED ASAP. At this point I'd accept a "random selection from full playbook" rather than see every team run the same vanilla concepts and plays. Every team for the most part plays the same.

All in all open up CPU playcalling for more than 15-20% variety that is just sickening given the fact playbooks have around 450 plays.

SOLUTION: draw data from teams tendencies on down& distance such as personnel sets. Then use all sets for given situations correctly but do not cap plays available out of those formations.

2.)
The challenge system. It's been faulty and incorrect for as long as I can remember I've played and owned every madden since 2000 and I don't think they ever have got it right.
There needs to be a menu on which you choose what you challenge. It's part of football no excuse just get it in the game please. I don't think it gets easier than the image shown.

3.
So last year they introduced ball carrier archetypes. Bland but variety was added.

Now let's see this ranged out to each position.
My idea with this is : Traits need to be added as well as levels. I say 5 levels should suffice. Variation of DYNAMIC PLAYERS is needed. KEY NOTE: I do not want these levels to be capped by ratings though. Like I dont want to see it work [a level 5 trait = 90+ rating.]] It turns into player OVR mess; as well as identity mess up. Let the ratings define the final success.

My theory for that is : Maybe there is a QB who is statistically average but lacks arm talent but makes the right decisions (ideal read below) or maybe there's a guy who has catch problems and jazz but can make remarkable grabs seldom and really high points ball (cam merideth / tyrell Williams) maybe those guys should have a level 4 aggressive catch while having 70s ratings. More cases could be made but I don't want the levels to be locked by rating range.

Example :
Qbs- all traits should be leveled
Force passes - Ideal/Conservative/ aggressive should be levels 1-5. The "Ideal level" should be his ability to ideally make the right throwing decision. Conservative vs aggressive also on a 5 level scale should be tendency sliders how likely is this QB going to throw conservative check down passes vs pushing the ball downfield.
Same thing with Sense pressure/ throw ball away ect.. QB levels are more of tendency separation rather than an animation gameplay difference (read below)

RB's - Fight for extra yards/ cover ball/ NEW- "pick up blitz" level 1-5.
These things should be in game tendencies.

WR's

RAC / POS/ AGG catch styles they should have 1-5 levels rather than (yes & no) with the level implementation you then can have level specific animations for style of catch. 15 levels of a wide receiver with different animation combinations. Would definitely spice up receivers especially adding Ratings into effect as well.

DLine : Bull rush / spin / swim / high motor these should also use the uniform 5 level system. Dlineman should not be stripped moves because they don't use them often every lineman uses any move they need to. Simply put if you cannot do these moves you will not be on field on Sundays.
So have 5 be elite effective moves
And again this creates a dynamic play style for each player.

I think I've explained enough if you want more in depth on positions I didn't post I'll add in later.

2.B) THIS VARIETY makes everything better ; Draft; gameplay/ Player CFM/ CFM in general player battles. Animations game to game

3.) realistic injuries/ in game and even mid play 2k and the show can pull this off but in madden it doesn't happen really. Would like to see more injury variety and maybe even a recovery rating

4.) audibles & cadence
id like to see more CPU cadence fakes and I'd like them to make audibles to my audibles not just "Peyton Manning effect" I feel like old Peyton Manning had something hard coded because he was the only QB who would audible in game more than 1-2 times..

5.) make player cfm matter
Add a playable combine :40/ bench/ shuttle / vertical/ positional drills

Also add details & more archetypes and "skill points" to mold they type of player you want even within the arch type. I don't like the backstory decider (1st round / mid round/ I drafted)

Add the ability to be drafted or just select your team.

Running out of time with this post I made at too it or make a new post. All in all I think these would make madden fresh and more enjoyable. IMO

Is love to see madden introduce the team location that nba 2k has. The Nikita to basically create teams in any way you want and having the ability to download other people's creations. This way you could basically create NCAA Football teams in madden like many people made ncaa basketball 17 in 2k.

I did mention to leave it as a option to have.

Time is a valuable commodity the older I become. lol

I would like to see more position flexibility. In the NFL today positions are more flexible and fluid based on situation. The Panthers with McCaffrey and Samuel would be fun to play with if you could fully maximize their abilities.

I understand some stuff might be troublesome with online play but QB/RB/WR and S/LB should be open for formation subs now that we have them. At the very least make it a player option so individual players would have the designation like McCaffrey, Samuel, Peppers would have it while others don't.

Someone mentioned last year it was around May 9th when a trailer dropped.

Otherwise, we will get crumbs at EA play.

a lot of these ideas are great but we shouldnt lose sight of those of us that are stick impaired or use coach mode cos we want our roster to play to their ratings/techniques/temperament/intelligence/football iq plus or minus a cariance and i for one dont want to be the qb, or whiff a tackle cos im not football savvy

I want to see contextually appropriate animations, adjustments based on body position. Like when a receiver is running towards the sidelines, he just keeps running during the catch instead of trying to square up to face the ball.

I just want the receivers to react how a skilled pro is trained to. Things like when to break stride, variations in route running mechanics, opening hips to face the ball, catching with the body vs hands are all considerations that aren't represented. I hate seeing that catch animation where the player is running a drag, the ball is thrown behind, and his inside leg is forward while he reaches up and back to make the catch. It is so ugly and I'm always thinking how difficult you make it for yourself doing that. That example should be a low success rate catch animation that good receivers don't attempt.

Make effort and urgency visible in animations - sprinting, quick adjustments, fumble recoveries.

One last thing is the juking system is brutal. It's impossible to represent with heat-seeking defenders. You have to be able to freeze opponents from further away with changes of direction and not just running into them, pressing juke, and hoping you get the animation.

1 Smarter AI in the 2-min drill
2 i like the FG system but if u are off by .01 u miss evan a 30 yarder
3 easier punt return

Cover annoucement and initial trailer was May 12th last year, so we are close!
As far as EA Play goes, we usually find out just about everything there don't we? As far as main features etc. And some gameplay footage (hopefully)

Could be nothing, could be something. We've gotten first look trailers around this time for the last couple years and full trailers have been released at E3 or EAPlay for as long as I can remember so the late-June timeline seems a bit odd. Hopefully we'll get the usual bombardment around EAPlay time.

I just hope this whole Frostbite change-over doesnt give EA the impression that a visual/animation overhaul is a big enough of a change that they don't fix more of the other issues.

I could handle it if they didnt do a single thing to the visuals/animations and focused on only gameplay / improvements to CFM

I think with the success of Fifa's the journey then the top bods at EA could likely push for that in Madden. It could likely rival NBA2ks MyCareer but I can't see how a Madden Journey/Superstar could do anything like MyPark so it would be limited.

I would agree that the new engine will likely be touted as a big back of box feature and shadow over some other features. We might hopefully see a split of Madden-bowl and Sim-style sliders as the dev team has hinted this is a direction they might want to go.

For gameplay, I'd settle for O-Line-D-Line interaction, further fine tuning of M16 defensive improvements, full team true step and off ball injuries. Is this a reasonable amount of improvement to expect in 1 year?

For Franchise, anything less than scrapping CFM (which could happen if Journey/Superstar happens) and rebuilding it to include a LOT more features (chemistry, morale, badges/expanded attributes, offseasons, coach carousel etc) I would view as a disservice to those screaming for changes to Franchise where big improvements have not happened since M12. Whilst I would love to protest and not buy M18 if this doesn't happen, not buying would also mean losing my online league so I feel a bit stuck there.
