NHL 17 News Post

NHL 17 patch 1.04 is available now for Xbox One and PlayStation 4. It includes 11 all new goal celebrations to showcase ultimate bragging rights and new goalie animations that make it easier to cover the post and prevent short-side goals. In Creation Zone, new logos and uniforms have been added including the LA Kings alternate uniform, Philadelphia Flyers alternate uniform and the Winnipeg Jets Classic Uniform, along with quite a few other things listed in the patch notes below.

GAMEPLAY
  • Added 11 new goal celebrations to the creation zone.
  • Fixed an issue where a user goalie would get stuck after getting hit while in butterfly.
  • Fixed an issue where after an icing the puck it would sometimes cause human players to sit on the bench for the next play.
  • Fixed some issues where a goalie would get stuck in a post lean away from the post.
  • Added new post lean saves for more coverage.
  • Improved goalie post lean logic so goaltenders to try and make saves that keep them sealed on the post to prevent short side goals.
  • Fixed an issue where some signature stances caused the goalie’s glove hand to push back behind their pad when holding the puck idle on their stick.
  • Fixed issues with shot animations when in close to the net.
  • Updated User goalie save logic to help them move into a save when they are requesting to push/move first.
  • Added functionality to allow goalies to rotate more when coming off the post from VH to butterfly to make them more square to the puck.
  • Updates to User goalie save logic on wraparounds based on requested motion.
  • Updates to User goalie save delay when in good position to make a blocking save.
  • Fixed an issue where a goalie would sometimes drop to butterfly when in possession of the puck on a User requested pass attempt.
  • Improved the reliability of one timers by adding quicker snapshots for situations where there isn't enough time to take a full slapshot.
  • Fixed an issue where precision skating would sometimes conflict with a loose puck deke attempt at a slow speed. Now if you have your stick out a deking position it prioritizes the deke request.
  • Updated goalie logic so that goalies will hold their near post on pass attempts near the net to prevent easy short side goals.
  • Updated goalie logic for softer shots on net so that they look to pick it up rather than make a save.
  • Various crash fixes.
  • General stability updates across all modes.

I play be a pro goalie 95% of the time, Im loving the new update, I found a usable slider for it to have a good season and put up solid numbers, going into my draft year I'm a 77 overall and finally liked playing goalie, only problem was that due to the amount of sloppy or glitchy goals, the only way to counteract it was to turn game speed to 0 and player speed down to 25, after playing the 1st 2 games of season which happened to begin the day after the update, I feel like I can finally play a faster game and still post my solid numbers! (Attached pic is end of regular season so playoff and offseason progression bumped me up to 77)

Enjoying my season enough to play every game on 7 minute periods. If you liked 16 offline, then 17, now a few fixes have been rolled out, is considerably more enjoyable in terms of goal variety and *slightly* better AI. New goalie anims are in and look cool, the custom celebrations definitely work in season mode and most importantly of all, the stat overlays during a game are much improved with proper season goal totals, career points ( you get special cutscenes at milestones, 50 goals, 100 goals, a rookie's first NHL goal etc. ).

Create-a-team is decent enough for a first stab and you can put any freshly created team into an NHL season not just relocation in franchise mode.

The menus are slightly faster, the whiteness is a nice change but it's still a bit of a nuisance accessing league leaders in key categories. Having to go through quite a few button presses just to find out who has the best save percentage in the league gets real annoying after a while.

The new 1-100 gameplay sliders also work. For example, after this week's patch, I was getting less penalties, bumped the sliders and back to "normal". You can also save different slider sets which is handy because "play now" definitely seems more juiced up than "season".

In summation, if you like offline, go for it. There's plenty of room for improvement but I feel like I'm getting my money's worth this year and for once the tuners and patch have improved offline gamplay. Goalie rebound control and movement around the crease was horrible with the day one patch. Soft goals would go in every game. Much better now.

How is everyone feeling about how this latest patch ruined the skating. There is a floatiness to it now. It has completely ruined the experience. Why devs? why?

I find the opposite, but I use my own sliders and I think it is skater agility, which I equate to ice friction, because when my guys turn they are heavy depending on what speed I try to turn at and if I try too sharp, I lose the puck depending on the puck carrier. I'm pretty happy with that.

I just wish they would tone down the AI reaction time. I've been speaking of it for a while. I have such great games but hate that the millisecond I press poke check, they pull their stick away, if I spam it, they will weirdly looking do it over and over.

Go to shoot, they are able to stop it because they are programmed to poke when you shoot, but there should be a delay there as to when you shoot, they react, maybe the puck is already by them. That is my one single gripe with the game right now. Hoping a new patch or update could fix that as there is no slider for it.

What is your skater agility setting? I use al tito's which is 45. The problem with the patch is that now you only feel weight on really sharp turns at higher speeds. Before the patch when you tried to accelerate you could feel the weight of trying to pick up speed, it felt like you were controlling something substantial. With the patch, everyone feels like feathers when they accelerate. The patch also introduced this problem, instead of taking 5 strides to cover a certain amount of ground now it only takes 3 (The patch introduced a float to cover more ground w/ less strides.)

I'm on mostly defaults 4/4.. but I feel the exact opposite. I think skating is the best it's ever been, players have more weight to them, depending on size/attributes. In fact, this last patch/tuner has nailed the game play for me in all areas.

This is what I expected when NHL 17 was released.

Im on near default and I agree it feels very floaty and I have worse reaction time but this happens every year after updates so if it worth it start tweaking sliders but then expect a domino effect to some degree .

Its 2016 and you have ask is it worth it ? As I just wanna pick up and play with a few tweaks but once again even with all the new sliders its just not worth it at times especially without in game sliders .

I'm using all Titos sliders and this latest patch has knocked my shots on goal down about 5-10 shots per game. Love this patch.

Anyone know what the gameplay tuner did?

I have skater agility now set to 41 ( I was using 45 pre-latest patch ). Also, you mention acceleration. I play on game speed 2 but felt that was a little slow originally so gave that a slider a small bump to 55.

I've now turned acceleration down to 51 and these two changes brings back the weightiness you mention. The best way to describe it is that you can sort of feel a standing player pushing off his skates to pick up speed.

Do agree, this week's patch brought a bit of floatiness and the subtle dev-side increase in these two fields gave the action on-ice a pinball multiball feel that was just too frantic to what I'd been playing up until now. Good news is that you can definitely get the old feeling back and it also reduces goal totals a little because you're impacting all players ability to figure skate and do crazy stuff.

If you're in season mode, maybe mod your two sliders, save, quit then do a full restart of the game from the dash / XMB, just to make sure the changes actually take. Sometimes, I'm of the opinion they don't.

I agree. In fact, I'm liking the way this game plays so much right now that I decided against getting any other games this weekend, and will focus the next few months on NHL 17.

I don't know....I'm running out of energy trying to find a sweet spot with this game. Not liking the new tuner. I've played 4 games with it and every game both sides are scoring 4 of more goals. I'm seeing the old magnetic puck back and the loose play seems gone. I don't understand how a player gets knocked to the ice and an still get up and skate in with the puck before I can gain control of the puck. In 3 of the 4 games the CPU scored a goal by shooting it over the net and it hits the glass bounces off into my goalies back and into the net. The CPU is doing the old NHL16 back skating through the neutral zone until it gain entry. Ugh....these are my settings I had great games with prior to patch and tuner. I'm just exhausted trying to get this game to play decent. Taking a break

Recently got back into Hockey and the NHL series, I bought it earlier this year when it came out after having played the EA Access version of 16 and the trial for this game. I really liked it when I played it at first but didn't put much time into until recently.

Really enjoy this game right now and the updates to it, nice to be back on the ice!

# 56 Sauce12 @ 11/27/16 11:44 AM
I haven't had time to play the game since the patch and haven't downloaded the new tuner yet. Should I get it or play with the last tuner, wich I really enjoyed?

Overall, I think the game plays much better after the update. The primary issue I had prior to the update was revolved around the Goalies - which were absolutely terrible. Most of those issues seem to be fixed.

A couple other changes that I would like to see:

1.) CPU Reaction Time: As it's been mentioned a couple times on this thread, I believe the CPU reaction time is too high. It seems like the CPU knows exactly where each player is at all times and fires off rocket passes without giving the user any time to react. Pinpoint passes, wide open skaters - just feel a little cheap. It doesn't make the game unplayable, but does need to be toned down.

2.) User Passing: Am I the only person who thinks passing is absolutely terrible? Its so frustrating to find a guy wide open, hit LT to pass him the puck and it goes to someone covered up by 2 CPU players. The puck simply doesnt go where I want it to go. Not sure if I'm just doing something wrong, or the passing skills of my players are terrible.

For #2 - try tweaking the pass assist slider, I have mine all the way up and still the CPU teams have a better passing % but it's not as frustrating.
