NBA 2K17 News Post

NBA 2K has been considered the gold standard of sports games. Every other sports game has been judged against 2K's overall quality over the past couple of years.

This year, NBA 2K17 isn't much different.

Initially I gave the game a 9.0, which qualifies as an all-time classic on our scoring scale.

There's a lot to like about this year's game, but more than a month after release and with the NBA season just beginning, it's worth taking a look at the game again to see if it still holds up to those initial lofty impressions.

Absolutely.

A new physics engine adds a new layer of strategy and physicality to the game.

Animations are blending well.

Games are dynamic and playing against the CPU feels fantasticc. Even better with an edited roster and on point sliders.

Some bugs, but hopefully they are ironed out.

Aesthetically, the slimmer body types look great. Although plenty of players need to be thinner (eg Dirk, Porzingis, Parsons).

Basketball fans can be thankful our sport gets a product this good.

Glad you're enjoying it, but...wow.

6/10 for a current state. Worsened defence in all areas since 2k16, numerious problems with shooting, unituitive menus, OP badges, list goes on.

Bruh.....I'm shleep...you can't even get all 5 people on a consistent basis to make it in to pro am, or walk on pro am and you think this is worthy of an all time classic?

When 2k stops allowing these then we can open up the conversation again...

Whoever wrote this is surely entitled to their opinion. It just seems odd that there's no evidence the author has paid any attention to the community feedback in the official OS 2K17 Impressions thread.

If he hasn't, then the post is nothing more than his impression, among the many.

If he has read the thread and chooses to pretend all that feedback doesn't exist, then how is this an even an OS community article? If his opinion differs, he should at least acknowledge the existence of the overwhelming majority of people who explicitly do not experience the game as he does, and maybe explain why his opinion is different.

I really like 2k17 gameplay wise , other than the insane shooting percentages . Defense could be a little tighter too but overall it's nice .

But as a majority my career /pro am guy I feel like everything is broken or glitched. On top of the things not working the game crashes a lot after pro am games.

"As a side note, it's kind of silly NBA 2K releases so early as basketball season really doesn't get to the forefront of our attention until December."

Completely agree with this. We all want the game in our hands asap but why release the game a month before the season even starts? I hope next year they push the release black to early/mid October to give the developers cycle a little extra time, at least for one year.

Personally I haven't had any issues with the game when it comes to actual gameplay. Most of my problems come from my end as I'm still adjusting and learning the game. You can't play 2k17 like it is 2k16 and expect to have the same success. Interested in seeing how much the game will change once the next patch releases.

I will say my one complaint has to be with aiming with the shot stick. Years of 2k has me aiming differently based on my players position to the rim, especially when attempting shots like step backs turnarounds, or shots from a post up position. I'm still struggling to consistently pull straight down with the shot stick.

I just can't agree...yet. I was super excited with expansion mode/starting in offseason and all. But the way and the amount of times cpu gets in the paint so easily and cheaply the gameplay is not good right now. See what happens after the next update...

Pushing up the release date let more bugs slip into the product at launch, which I hope 2K gets back on track with for 2K18. It probably doesn't matter to most people, but I backup my saves, so I always play v1.00, because the NBA 2K series updates are not backwards compatible like every other sports game.

No I don't think so this year, too many issues and things not working as advertised.

I don't know, dudes. I think most of the people on here sound hyper critical. I admit I've only had the game for 2 weeks, but I have to say I feel very real changes in this game, and I love it. The dribbling feels real, shot-making feels real.

Last year's defense was insanely over-powered user-to-user. The amount of times I let players go by me on defense just so I could swat them from behind was insane. Unrealistic, as fun as it was.

This year, I really enjoy the fact that when you create space from the defender, you are rewarded. This is how basketball should work. The game is founded upon ball movement, and shot creation. I'm much more impressed with how this version of 2K represents true basketball.

If you're concerned with defense in the game, ask yourself if you see stellar defense night in and night out in the NBA. In my opinion, its the job of these games to create a simulation true to what we see in basketball today. It's the same reason why the running game in Madden feels weird. Teams don't run the ball that effectively in the NFL, yet Madden chose to create their own version of events.

I'm happy that you can take difficult looking shots, and hit them if you've created space. When you watch a basketball game, you see insane athletes making ridiculous plays. Is everyone just upset that there isn't an NCAA 2K and taking it out on NBA perhaps? To me, this version looks like the real thing, and most importantly feels like it.

As a Knick fan though, Kristaps Porzingis looks like Ivan Drago, and plays like Wilt. He needs to be slimmed down, and less successful down low.

I respectfully disagree. This game has a lot of great features in it but with poor execution. Just seeing all the updates/patches they have released already and we are still waiting on the major gameplay patch shows the poor state this game was released in.

Im a pure offline player and I can say I havent enjoyed the game at all at least compared to how I enjoyed 2k16 this time last year.

I must second this wholeheartedly. I'm not sure what the author of the article is even doing -- it seems like a revised impression but doesn't take into account the multiple patch releases since the initial release, as well as the bugs that have cropped up/continue to plague the game.

In fact, the article tends to gloss over all that and if anyone is on the fence about buying it, it very much leads them to believe that the game is just fine and everything's okey dokey.

Which is misleading. I think there needs to be clarification at the top of the article that it represents one reviewer's impression/opinion and I believe there needs to be a separate article exploring the issues 2K17 is facing at the moment.

The lack of Roster Updates are pretty frustrating already. Some moves like the Michael Carter-Williams trade & Lance Stephenson signing with the Pelicans were made in more than enough time for a update, but every Thursday you can count on packs & updates added every week for MyTeam, not every player cares about that mode.

You have make an effort to please everybody instead of advertising your latest pay wall.

It was a pretty good game at launch, despite all the bugs.

However, all these tweaks, tunes and patches have turned the gameplay into a mess. As an online player I'd advise you to stay as far away from this game as possible until around late December when the patches have dropped and the gameplay is brought back to a sim (or at the very least playable) state.

I also hope that this is the last year they do the September release. I won't even bother buying this game again next year if they try to do that again. I thought the Prelude was cool but don't try to rush out the full game almost a month before the normal release date just to be greedy.

This is something I wonder about for various aspects in gameplay, not just the defensive end. The players in the NBA have a varying level of skillsets and abilities. Doing certain things in the game will be easier or more difficult depending on the player you are controlling and player you are up against. For example if you are playing defense on Curry and you are controlling Jeremy Lin you'll probably struggle regardless of how good you are at the game. Now if you are controlling Gary Payton and are defending Curry it should be a bit easier. You might not lock him down for an entire game but you should be more successful than if you are playing as a poor defender.

This goes for various other aspects of the game and basketball. You need to understand both the player you are controlling and your opponent. If you don't play to the strengths and weakness of your team and your opponent you will struggle.

As for the various problems and issues people mention I think it depends on the modes you play and how much you let these bugs effect you. I've really only played Play Now and My Team and so far I haven't noticed any issues, especially since patches released, that ruin the experience. Perhaps others that have played more modes than I have experienced much more detrimental issues but when it comes to on court action bugs and issues have been at a minimum.

I can't really speak on the online stuff, I don't play Park or any of that. That said, I've found the gameplay to be pretty solid.

The dribbling is still a little animation heavy at times, but it definitely feels better and more responsive than last year. Hopefully once I get the hang of it I'll have an easier time getting past defenders and shifting defenses. Right now I feel pretty limited offensively because of this and it can be frustrating, but I've seen enough videos of guys getting it right that I'm not ready to throw in the towel. Definitely getting tired of running so many pick and roll/fade plays though, lol.

I think rebounding and defending are both more fun this year because the ball feels a bit more alive, per say, and I really liked the addition of the skip pass.

The presentation is fantastic as well, loving the improvement on the interviews, etc, although I could still do without Coach Genero in the huddle, even though I'll admit he does drop the knowledge sometimes.

For me, it's an 8-8.5, but I really feel like my enjoyment level will go up when I get a little further through the learning curve.

"Assuming patches don't mess with that experience"....no need to assume now.

Well, the comment section on this article is about exactly how I figured it'd be before I clicked on it.

Can't even come to OS anymore without being drowned in negativity towards this game.

Seriously, why do you guys even own this game anymore if you hate it with this much passion? I would have sold it weeks ago if I felt same way you guys do.
