MLB The Show 16 News Post

San Diego Studio game designer, Lance Leahy provides more details on the 2 new modes for MLB The Show 16 today. Check out the new video on Battle Royale and Conquest modes and post your thoughts.

Quote:
Battle Royale is the most challenging and competitive game mode Diamond Dynasty has ever seen. In this player-versus-player experience, you’ll be challenged to draft a team and outlast opponents in a double-elimination tournament to acquire unique rewards.

Conquest is like a classic turn-based strategy game that pits you against the 30 MLB teams on a map of North America. You’ll be tasked with the challenge of defeating MLB teams and conquering territories in order to complete specific missions that contain team-specific rewards.

No you don't need PS+ for rosters. Online to play multiplayer online

I think they're going be a little more generous with stubs this year too.

Conquest mode actually looks pretty cool.

I don't understand why people are complaining about the 1500 Stubbs buy in.

There is a game called "Hearthstone" where you have to play 150 Golds to enter Arena mode (draft your cards mode), but you are guaranteed to get a card pack (100 Golds value). Sounds similar? That game is extremely popular and it's the same model.

However there is a market behind this decision also... Let's say if you earn 1500 stubbs by playing the game. You now have 3 possibilities:

- buy a standard pack for 1000 Stubbs and buy a player on the market for 500 Stubbs. This way 1000 + 50 Stubbs are going back to the Bank. (1000 for the pack and 50 for the market sale assuming 10% of TAX this year) On the other hand you get 7 new cards on the market

- buy a run in Battle Royale for 1500 Stubbs. This way, 1500 stubbs are going to the Bank (SCEA), but you also get 6-10 cards, which of course you can use in the market.

- you decide to buy a player for 1500 stubbs on the market. This way only 150 Stubbs are going to the Bank (Tax for selling), and you only get 1 new player (who in fact is not a new player on the market, because he was on the market before) If you are doing this, you are not supporting the growth of the market you are just playing it.

Howevere if your goal is to get players and not making money, you should support the growth of the market.

So, by encouraging YOU to buy packs and BR runs, there are going to be more players on the market, which leads to lower values on the market, because there are going to be more supply of players.

This is going to change the market significantly.

Even though I will never probably win a BR (shoot I may not play more than once or twice) I hope that the unique cards that can only be won in BR as awards are not sellable on the market.

When they say that Nolan Ryan can only be acquired in Battle Royale I hope that means that we won't see a flood of his cards on the Market, which would negate one of the incentives to play BR.

Holy crud, I agree with a Cardinals fan on something...

Or, if they ARE sell-able on the Market, maybe make them a unique one-off. Meaning, once you've won that card, you can't win it again. So those users who do nothing but play BR all day and all night don't keep accumulating unique legends/prime cards.

Why do people care about cards? genuine question.

Well, the obvious answer is that if you are interested in playing Diamond Dynasty or the new Conquest mode then the cards are how you build your team. As a Cardinal fan if I want Adam Wainwright in my rotation I have to have the Adam Wainwright card.

Many if not most of the captains missions and general missions are based around fielding DD teams that meet certain requirements, which means you need to have the player cards to meet those requirements.

Finally some people just like the collecting aspect of the cards. They are kind of like achievements in that regard. Personally I have never tried to earn all of the achievements in the game as they do not matter to me, but others enjoy the added challenge.

Cards are less important to RTTS (you only use Equipment cards in that mode) and Franchise players (where you use sponsorship cards) so I can see many of those players not caring as much about player cards.

I assume those cards will be unsellable Ryan and Arod just like the collection legends last year.
I'm going grind hard for that Arod

Yes, but it would allow those who don't want to play online or who can't compete online to get those cards. I don't like exclusive cards since it means you have to be good enough to have a lopsided W-L record in BR to get any of them. There are a lot of people who simply will never get those cards if they are exclusive and non-sellable.

Plus I would want to recoup my buy in fee and be able to sell the lesser cards I earn and if I win 20 games in a row I feel I should be able to sell the reward for stubs. What if earn two Ryan's? I cannot sell one of them?

The players who aren't BR exclusive (ARod, Nolan Ryan, etc.) will be sellable because people would end up with tons of terrible unsellable cards which makes no sense. I am not sure what happens with 2 Ryans but I think the cards should be sellable because it would be hard to pay for such a good card anyway.

Somebody needs to remember to ask the question about the BR exclusive award cards being sellable during tomorrows twitch stream.

I would ask but I always miss the first 45 minutes of the stream due to work.

# 53 TexasDBack @ 03/09/16 05:34 PM
My guess is that the card in that scenario is unique (you can only earn it 1 time) and bound to you (not able to be sold). This is usually the case in games that do rewards like that. Again, this is just a guess and hopefully someone can confirm tomorrow.

Sorry for the basic question, as I've never played DD, but do I have to unlock players in DD first before I can play Conquest mode or can I start conquest mode on release day as soon as I put the disk in?

You will have a team already when you first start (will mostly be low overall players). You will be able to play conquest right away

He did kind of waffle on the question though like maybe some may not be.
