The PES 2016 Demo has been out and playable for a few days now, and OS'ers generally seem to be pleased with what they see. But what about the staff? We get some of the gang together in a new roundtable discussion to see what exactly they're thinking about the demo as we head towards release.

Jayson - So you don't like the x button for tackling and meter for measuring passing and therefore hate the game? Everyone i talk to loves the meter but if you are doing a short pass you don't need to even look at it. Most of the time you don't unless trying to pinpoint a pass or are switching play across the field. Also if you play on a high difficulty and spam x usually the AI or human player will go right around you.

Also the menus are not that confusing to me. It is just because most people play FIFA and are used to those menus. It is like any game you play that has different menus. Just takes a little while to get used too. Don't get me wrong, they are not perfect but they are NOT that hard to get around. It has been pretty easy for me to go in and edit whatever I wanted.

Anyway these are good just wish you guys went into a little more depth. Check out my thread for an in depth look at how fluid formations, tactics, and other things can really improve the gameplay and make it more simulation like.

The roundtables are more meant for quicker impressions. When the release comes around, obviously we'll go much more in depth. I watched your video the other day though, thanks for sharing on the site.

Yeah no problem, just felt like a little rebuttal would help with the conversation. I agree it isn't perfect but has a lot going for it.

Wow, this james guy doesn't sound like a fifa fanboy at all, right?
He seriously sounds like someone who played one PES title and moved to fifa, considering what he said about the controls.
Also, the rating system? Remember fifa 15? Remember the rating system it used? That's right, a PENTAGON.
This system was on almost all PES titles (only one I remember didn't have it is 2015), and you know it's a good system if football manager uses it...

i can't believe it.
This is what PES 2014 would be...Look at that. It's PES 2013 and it looks and feels so much closer too PES 2016 than PES 2015 does....

What?
You just showed a PES 2013 with I think mods?

One of my favourite things about the PES rating system is that you get immediate feedback when moving a player around different positions. It's a bit of a crapshoot in FIFA when it comes to this and it makes the team management aspect alot easier...

...which then immediately goes out the window when trying to navigate the cumbersome menus present in this game. All the talk going into PES 2016 was the redone menus and granted they LOOK alot better. But functionally they're the same and I'd rather they work on that aspect of things.

As a relative PES newb, the menus were a huge pain to deal with in PES 2015 and they're not really any better in this demo. FWIW, the other game's menus are far from perfect themselves.

I am generally "anti-meter" in all sports games, not just the soccer ones. The difference between PES/FIFA and say, MLB The Show or NBA 2K, is that the latter group of games gives people like me the option of having attribute ratings govern the areas of the gameplay that meters will determine on the default settings. I'd love to see a "ratings only" kicking system brought into PES/FIFA. It really should have happened years ago, when you consider how long basketball and baseball games have given their players that option.

Awww, the control scheme is too hard for Jayson. Lets get him a Wii controller. Why fix something if it's not broken. That would be like Madden changing their passing control scheme after all these years.

Yeah I play NBA2k with ratings only, especially at the free throw line

I guess I am on the Pro Yakyuu type of team where stats change how your player can play (for example in that game a bad player has a smaller bat to hit and a better pitcher has a smaller ball to hit which is all dependent on how well you execute the playing mechanics). Whereas I am not a fan of The Show where I can hit the same ball in the same spot at the same time and get a homerun with one guy and a groundout with the other. Can be frustrating.

Though for something that can be mastered like a free throw using real ratings is much better. ha.

PES has a rating only system.

you have alot of options to put stuff on manual/advanced.

stick skills and ratings mean so much more when doing that.

i dont see much difference with how 2K implemented it TBH.

love to hear a clear explanation ....

N00b question, but do you mean to say that PES has a ratings only system where it doesn't depend on how long I press the button for a pass or shot?

I think I'd actually prefer that to be honest.
I want the players to play like their real life selves instead of depending on my skill (or lack thereof) with the controls.

Yup it does.

That can't be the case or why have the meter at all? The meters affect gameplay, and the player ratings affect forgiveness and efficiency when using the meters.

The dribbling is still a bit too slow and limited for me, but I really like almost every other aspect of the gameplay so far. That being said, the fouls are a dealbreaker. If that doesn't get ironed out, and it's hard to imagine it will at this stage, I just don't think I can invest the $60. It just takes a huge step back in the realism dept.

Shooting is also limited. It's just like last year. There is no variety. Keepers also behave like their 2015 counterparts in that they don't come off their line enough to challenge attackers who break through the d-line for one on ones. If those two things along with fouls are fixed PES 2016 could be a gem of the game. I'm not sure they will though with so many people praising the game. If they supposedly have a 95 percent satisfaction rate what incentive do they have to improve the game? All that said, the demo plays a pretty good game of football. I like the pace, momentum, crossing, tactical options and physical play.
