Rory McIlroy PGA TOUR News Post

EA Sports has just released another Rory McIlroy PGA TOUR trailer. This one shows off the Night Club Challenge mode, which breaks you free from the norm, to experience a totally new way to play golf in the dark, all while helping players tune their game. While the mode certainly won't be for everyone, it offers a rather unique way to play the game.

The mode features more than 170 quick and fun challenges, which include hitting targets, landing in buckets, exploding objects, rolling through gates, knocking down barrels, and steering through rings. It also includes over the top gameplay boosts, and various ways to unlock unique fantasy characters and courses.

A blog should be available shortly and we will update this post with a link.

UPDATE: Blog is available now.

Here are some of the boosts available.
  • Rocket – Provides a lift to the ball to hit unreachable targets.
  • Sticky – Use this to stop the ball from rolling, or stick to the ground like glue when it makes contact with the terrain.
  • Remote Control - Take control and steer the ball left and right to avoid obstacles, fly through rings, and roll through croquet gates.
  • Nitro - Gain extra distance on your shot.
  • Nudge - Obstacle in the way? Use the Nudge to adjust the shot in mid-air or while rolling along the ground.
  • Super Spin - Double the amount of spin on the ball, or backspin onto targets that are normally unreachable.
  • Pause – Stop the ball in mid-air to time shots and hit moving targets or avoid pesky obstacles.
  • Below Zero – Avoid bad lies by bouncing the ball off any type of terrain, including sand or even water.
  • Anchor - Stop on a dime and drop straight down to the ground. Rotate your camera view in air to spot the target, then drop from the sky and slam down to the ground.

I was actually considering picking this game up. Not now. I'll deal with the lesser graphic quality of TGC and wait patiently for PP's PerfectGolf.

Typical EA. All flash and pretty graphics but no core gameplay. I will stick with TGC.

Every minute that was spent on this is a minute that wasn't spent making the core PGA Tour material. Ditto for every dollar budgeted for it. Yeah, I don't have to play it, but the fact that it exists means that the parts of the game that I want to play didn't get as much attention as they should have. That makes me angry.

It was still a complete and utter waste of time putting this in and just goes to show the demographics they are going for.

Awful sign for the future. There is no defending this being in this game at all.

What did I just watch...

This trailer was meant to be a joke right? I don't even know what to say right now.

I'm not defending it. The comments on here act like ea is forcing them to do it.

You'd have to show me those comments because I missed them.

I've seen a bunch comment justifiably upset at the very existence of this mode.

I get the pushback on this mode... but at the same time, I really don't get it. I mean... to me, it's no different than the ultimate team modes. I find them a complete joke in Madden and NHL. So... I just don't play it.

If PGA courses, and golfers are your thing, and you play the actual regular golf portion of the game, and it's good, who cares that this mode exists really?

Nobody says you have to play it. It just looks like a goofy arcadey mode to me, I dont like that it's there, so I get the frustration with it, and Id rather they didnt waste the time with it in development. However, if the rest of the game is still regular golf, with PGA golfers, courses, and equipment. So play that part, enjoy it, still give it a chance, and just ignore this part like some of the other modes in some of the other EA titles.

I know I'll never play this mode, I'm still giving the game a chance through EA Access though, and if the real golf side of it is good, then I'm still in. The sheer existance of this mode, isnt going to make me not buy it if the rest of the real golf portion is still good.

Divotmaker would probably be able to chime in on this better than I could but I'm pretty sure there is a HUGE different between Madden adding MUT and RM adding this mode.

I know for a fact that there are completely separate teams that work on that mode in Madden so it sacrifices no resources to other area's of the game.

I don't think it's a poor assumption to make that this dev team is DRASTICALLY smaller than Madden's so the opportunity cost for adding a mode like this is drastically different and much more of a hindrance than Madden adding MUT.

It miffs me because I actual enjoyed most of the training drills in the past, I think as of now we can assume they are still there but seeing this makes that not a guarantee.

Most concerning though, and why people are so mad about this, is it shows a strange direction for the franchise, and not one that you will get much support on here.

Wasn't their a similar mode like this for tiger 04 or 05 not to this extent, but vaugly remember a mode at night with targets back in the ps2 days. Not sure this needed its own blog post or trailer.

I don't remember one but that doesn't mean there wasn't but I'm not sure why something that may or may not have been in the game on ps2 but was since removed would add any comfort to those concerned with this being added in 2015.

You all realize this is just an extra mode and you don't have to every play it right

Not getting the uproar, honestly. Like has been stated by a few, things like this have been in the game in the past and can be skipped over rather easily. It's not for us on here on these boards. I won't play it and I imagine no one "hardcore" will. There's a whole other mode in the game made for guys like me and others on this board.

This mode doesn't kill the sim factor of this game any more than the crib did in NFL 2K, Blacktop in NBA 2K or the Party Mode in the NHL 2K series. I think people are so starved for info, we're living on the extremes of rationality.

This exact discussion was had just a few posts ago.

You can disagree with me and that's fine but I'm not going to copy and paste my last post.

I don't pretend to speak for others here, but I think the "uproar" is the fact that the first thing we see out of E3 on this game is a nonsensical arcade feature that has NOTHING to do with PGA TOUR Golf. We still do not know how the "golf" portion of the game will play. The marketing of this game is the most bizarre thing I have seen in 25 years of video gaming personally. This is the first EA Sports Golf game that I am actually debating on whether to get or not. And I have played every one since PGA TOUR for Sega Genesis in 1992.....

Absolutely. I get all of that. I'm not so worried about the direction though. They have the PGA license still. I dont think they would be coughing up cash for that just to make an arcade style game like this mode.

I don't like that they took focus away from designing another real PGA course or two over the 8 (9 with preorder) course list they have, so I completely get that.

I simply compared it to MUT/HUT in my original post though, because they are modes that I think are ridiculous in both of those games, and I just dont play them. Similar to how I'll handle this mode if my trial of the game through EA Access goes well.

Wrong on so many levels

For me, based on my past experiences with a vast amount of video games, this video really dictates what type of game and audience EA is targeting.

If EA is developing a racing game (Need for Speed) with Honda Civics that go 200 mph around city streets, then EA is targeting arcade racing audience. It may be a great game with stunning visuals, but I am a sim racer and simply do not have any interest.

For golf, I am also sim only. I play TGC only with all aids off. The video shown by EA dictates what type of game / audience they are targeting and it simply isn't my style.
Those saying, "you don't need to play this mode" are correct. I will not be playing that mode or purchasing this game.
