Madden NFL 15 News Post

I have spent quite a bit of time over the last couple of days playing the retail release of Madden NFL 15, which is set to release in a limited format to EA Access customers later today. To put it simply, this is probably the best Madden ever from a technical perspective and may be some of the most fun I’ve had with the franchise in years.

Here are my pros and cons after about ten full games:

Pros

Defense is fun again — There are multiple mini games you can now effectively partake in on each play on defense. Beating the OL is a timing mini-game of sorts which requires you to jump the snap and then make an effectively timed and directionally smart move to get to the QB. You can tell when you are facing an elite OT, because he will feel like a brick wall on many/most plays.
• Quarterbacks feel different — I don’t have enough info to safely say the pass accuracy is fixed, but playing Peyton Manning feels like you are playing a more elite level QB versus, say a Matt Cassel. Defensively, I found that it was even more of a rush to get to the QB when he was better, because you knew he was going to make decisions faster.
• Good news, the tackle cone doesn’t suck — From my initial play-sessions with Madden, it appears the tackle cone is not a major in your face type of addition many feared. The new tackling system adds a risk/reward setup to what used to be a very boring aspect of the game.
• Defenders are smarter — Zone defenders are much smarter this year, with players reacting to the ball much faster resulting in much narrower throwing lanes. This is going to make a lot of people used to soft zones very angry initially.
• The New Connected Franchise Options Are Great — Setting up a weekly gameplan or repairing your team’s busted up confidence is such a great series of decisions to have to make each week. Alex Smith had a horrible game against the Broncos and his confidence sank, so I had to spend valuable preparation points to raise his confidence back up. These are the things you don’t see in the NFL, but things coaches have to do to ensure players are at the top of their game.
• Community Playcalling is surprisingly good — The playcalling feature which I thought was nothing more than a gimmick actually seems to be pretty good at both conveying information that you would find relevant in both how users and how you use it. It makes the whole experience feel more connected.
• Thank goodness for the new cameras — Seriously, the new cameras and how they've been implemented (fast switching) is something which should be universal in sports games. It's that good -- it doesn't hurt the camera angles themselves are quite good, including the new over the shoulder defensive angle you can switch to on defense. Major kudos EA.
• The graphics, audio, and in-game broadcast presentation have arrived — It has long been a dream to have Madden look and feel like the rest of the major sports games in our genre, it always lagged behind. This year, at least to me, I feel like the presentation and graphics are both up there with anything you can find on store shelves today. It’s not perfect, but it’s definitely gotten to a point where it’s clearly quite good.

Cons

• The playcalling menus really need to quit defaulting to the community playcall screen — I swear the amount of manpower and hours I’m going to spend backing up one menu layer to get to my preferred playcalling screen is going to make me sad. Bonus points for the playcalling menus not having that weird lag where I literally miss my option a lot.
• QBs may still be too accurate out of the box — I need to run more tests, but I’m pretty sure QBs may be more accurate out of the box than realism would suggest is possible. The good news is, slider combinations are going to fix this largely.
• The game’s first boot takes too long to get to action you care about — We can do without this nonsense.
• The new kick meter is hit or miss — At first, I actually missed a couple of field goals, but now I seem to be automatic again. I need to test this out more.

Initial Thoughts

Thus far, Madden NFL 15 is really shaping up great. I still have a lot to check out within the game before I end up posting my final review. However, my initial thoughts are pretty strongly in favor of this year’s Madden. This is still Madden football, just a better and more true to life version of it. It’s too early whether to say Madden belongs amongst the discussion with the traditional great games in our genre, but I would be lying if I said it wasn’t tempting to suggest its possible at this point.

Look for my full review in a day or two here on OS. Madden NFL 15 releases later today (noon) for EA Access users in a limited six-hour demo, and will be out next Tuesday in stores.

Both those things (Movement and footplanting) are definitely in the game I love not being able to swerve and pick up 20 extra yards every time. And in my time playing I thought WR/DB interaction was much more present then previous versions of Madden.

Played first full game with Titans @ Soldier Field.

1.Graphics wise, the game has even out done last year in a way like wow.
2.Locker actually resembles himself as he walks up to the line.
3.Defense is actually fun once you figure out what is going on.
4.Played as Casey for most of game, had an early sack then I was double teamed the rest of the game.
5. No fumbles either team
6. scrambled left with Locker, he threw across his body then got hit and threw a perfect dart 40 yards down field (looks to be an issue again with accuracy)
7. Cutler controlled by CPU did overthrow Marshall a few times.
8. Lance Briggs head is HUGE, as well as many other players, I mean its very noticeable
9. Kicking is different but it works
10. stadium, scoreboard, field is awesome
11. half-time was cool and so are the tv broadcast, seems like CBS without CBS. very cool

based on one game I would give it a 8/10. Better than last year but still odd movements, too many perfect throws, Jim & Phil, play calling will take some time to master as well. Nice step forward for sure.

Looks like I will have to wait on OPS experts and sliders. The game feels great, looks great but I have some issues. Let me preface by saying I've been playing madden since year one but I'm a causal player so I play on all pro and always remain competitive. Here was my problem.

TB vs Hawks. They beat me 35-14 sounds reasonable but...
Wilson was 20-20 did not throw one incomplete pass, that has never happen to me in a game. The other was not a single penalty. The sliders were default and I played in all pro. Also simply no fatigue Lynch ran the ball every time.

I worry about the high completion percentage. Why have they not fixed this? Once again no penalties, they have not fixed that. Love the game but year after year the little things kill the realism of the game. Please experts on sliders fix this though in a perfect world it would be fixed out of the box.

I have serious issues with the turning upfield after receiving a pass, especially on sideline routes, and screens. It is almost 90% guaranteed that your player will either run out of bounds or do some stupid animation that forces him to run backwards a few steps, have a hard time turning around, and get tackled.

My other gripe is the same thing for interceptions. It's like the slight pause just after the interception allows the defenders to get a jump, and once the animation resumes, you are tackled after minimal gain. I found to counter this is to simply take the interception and allow the cpu A.I. to take control for a few yards, and THEN you can finish off the run. I've seen the cpu break a few tackles and I then take control and get a nice chunk. But if I try to take control immediately, I'm pretty much tackled.

Lol, you guys are killing me!!! I mean you want "sim" with Madden, (this the closet thing we've had to sim in Madden in a looooonnnnggggg time!) and you're complaining about not being able to turn on a dime to get up field...there is actually momentum in Madden this year that you must account for. Try laying off of turbo.

Hold up, are you seriously trying to say Madden 15 is a sim?? Now that is laughable. Seriously man, you need a reality check if that's what you're saying. For one, when have you ever seen players flopping and falling all over the place like lifeless crash dummies during gang tackles. Solo tackles are ok for the most part but you get more than 1 player in on a tackle and that game goes haywire in the worst ways. Not only that, you will see players spazzing out and defying gravity. Sim? HELL NO. Now the game does look good as far as the graphics go and animations not pertaining to gang tackles are serviceable, but when you have Olinemen getting tossed aside like feather weights, weather effects that have ZERO impact on the game, DBs in man coverage that suddenly run back towards the line of scrimmage towards NOTHING allowing the receiver to head to straight to the endzone uncovered, penalties hardly called, edge rushers RARELY using chop and rip techniques and just squaring up, I would hardly call this game a sim. It is a bit better than it's been in the past but it's still a mess that needs some serious fixes. Be it patches or fixing this stuff for M16. To call this the closest thing to a sim is delusional.

So wanting to catch a pass and turn up field like an actual human does in real life is bad? Some people are so high strung off anything EA creates that you can't even reason with them any longer. Every catch made towards the sidelines doesn't have to result in going out of bounds or tippy-toe animations. Momentum or not it's just overblown with this game. Most features are overblown. I catch a pass on an out and up and my WR only goes out and can't turn up. I mean this isn't rocket science.

Matter of fact if you watch enough football on Saturdays and Sundays you'll find that 60% of RAC is on or near the sidelines.

The bit of madden I played was fun but it really is amazing these things still happen this Gen.
