That is part of the new graphics. Now add specular lighting using the new lighting engine for both day and night games to the image on the far right, put the third and fourth images next to each other on a baseball field and have a better idea what the ps4 will be. Then give the image on the right new jersey textures and 350 new fielding and batting animations - image on the right is a bad hombre.

There is only so much you can do at a certain point. We have gotten to the point where the "little" things are what need to wow us, because there is so little room for improvement graphically.

I am happy with what I see for year one of the next gen, for whatever that matters.
So by this logic, ps4 graphics will never look much better than ps3?
Even though nba 2k 14 on ps4/xone looks like a totally different game than ps3/360 versions.
And Madden 25 looks completely different next gen.

That's a stretch. At first glance with both FIFA and Madden, you'd be hard-pressed to see the major differences between last gen and current gen versions.

On the diminishing returns topic...

I see that example brought up a lot, and I have to say, I see the same people showing that jumping on a game for it's graphics and image quality straight away after pointing out that graphics aren't everything. They're not everything, but they are one of the most desired upgrade in games.

The continued improvement in any way in an already great game will always bring me back for more. They've improve the overall image quality of the game, and keep striving to improve it in other ways even when there is very little in the way of competition. Great job!!

And there are many ways to improve graphics outside of quantity of triangles. That image is limited in scope.

I don't know man, I look at this footage and I am just truly in love. This is how baseball is supposed to look. They are looking at virtually untapped potential on this system, something which will be a sight to behold for years to come. I mean look at when the brandished bat goes into the light fixtures in center field, for Christ's sake! Look at that gleam and glow, and self-shadowing no less!

On that same token, I still feel like I can wait for the PS4 in general. There are very small yet specific things with this franchise that I'm always hoping will see the light of day. One of them is an authentic broadcast camera, another is what I personally consider to be a proper nighttime lighting transition, a proper stadium color palette (grass, dirt, walls) and textures on it all, and then there are the small things like a different PA announcer, less opposite field home runs... things like that. The rest really is just [really good] gravy as they tack on more features and animations, and with the franchise carry-over feature, there is no reason I would ever stop buying this game year-to-year. The Show on PS3 and Vita will keep me satisfied at least until my June birthday (we'll see if I cave in and get a PS4 by then haha).

Now onto my little gripe that you know is coming... I know I'll be the only one in this thread saying that the evening lighting/sky isn't my favorite. Oh, the lighting on the field is crazy good! So is at the start of the game. Exactly how I'd picture it to be. Then once Belt comes up in the bottom of the 4th, you really begin to see where the lighting starts to go on its own path (the "yellow" look more at the bottom of the horizon). I saw that and was like: "Okay, I'm on board. Let's just hope the transitions are smooth as it gets dark." Then Adrian Gonzalez comes up to bat in the top of the 5th, and suddenly I'm reminded of the quicker jumps to darkness at this point, going for the yellow-brown-orange-gray-blue look instead of the seeping dark blue. I know, clouds can give this effect... I also know this may be a little bone to some, but I'm still hoping that someday we'll get there where we see the transition to a darkening blue, like this sky until it fades to black. The lighting looks beautiful, but the skies just don't represent what I'd ever see at AT&T Park, or most parks for that matter.

Anyway, transition to Uribe in that same inning, then Butera, Crawford, Posey the next inning, etc. This game just does so many things right, that I'm not ashamed to say I think this is one area they might want to admit that there might be more proper nighttime sky alternatives (and that it takes a while to darken, and once it does it skips pretty quickly). Again like I said, I'm really picky about night... have been since I was like ten years old playing video games, hoping some day they'd do those sky transitions. It's a beautiful aspect of the sport. They're doing it now, but that deep-sea blue should be arriving at some point IMO. And again, I get it... some of these other skies are virtually possible given the amount of cloud coverage, the season, etc. (though with the way the sun falls there, it wouldn't ever look like that beyond right field at AT&T). I just wish there were a few more people behind me on the skies in that sense, though.

Everything else is just so right, or at the very least forgivable. I'll play this game till the end of time. Wishing on some color changes on the field and in the skies in the future, though. There is an AT&T specific issue I've had with the east bay backdrop that I'll ignore for now, but if everything else generally gets addressed someday, I don't think you'll hear anything from me again.

And I really do hate to make it sound like this post is full of negatives, it really isn't. There is just one thing I can make examples of so many times that I want to cry foul with that, and then praise all the rest that is glorious about this product. I don't have a PS4 anyway so I don't quite think I have a dog in this fight as of yet, but I'm looking at future years here.

EDIT: As I'm still watching this video, looks like once Hanley Ramirez comes up in the top of the 6th, we're at our darkest sky (a hint of gray, but it's black nonetheless... no more brown or anything). And man, that is the true essence of what a night game should look like right there! I'm talking about the on-field lighting now. The players have that right glow, the stands aren't too illuminated, the ball is a pearl... that's baseball! Colors on the grass and dirt could be of some variance but hey, that's been a staple of The Show since 2005 and I think there is some artistic merit involved in that and they have their rights to use that as they see fit. If they nail the seeping blue color that bleeds into that black before that, I think most people we'll really look in amazement at what can happen here. Just like someone posted in that Blue Jays jersey color thread, they didn't realize how off it was until they saw it on. I think that's what this thing is like here that we're looking at.

I don't think anything you are asking for is unreasonable in the least bit or negative by all means. The one thing I would love to see this generation is dynamic (atmosphere?) for lack of a better word. I would like to see rolling cloud coverage that actually affects the lighting causing to it get lighter or darker as the clouds pass by the sun, and have multiple types of sunsets depending on the time of year and weather.

I don't think any of it was negative either. Really good constructive criticism, IMO.

I know what you mean about AT&T in particular, because of the orientation of the stadium. As the sun goes down, right field/east bay should be a darker transitioned sky.

I agree. The question would be would it be possible to make those changes for one park. If the issue is specific to one park but the sky and lighting are universal by sky box, I don't know if it is possible to make a stadium by stadium specific sky box to achieve those atmospheric changes. Maybe it is possible. Don't know

Anything is possible. The real question is the trade off worth it, whether it's cost, time spent, or forgoing another project to improve the game. Probably not worth their time next year since stadiums will have their second year of development and player models may get a lot of focus. It'd be awesome to see the skies specific to stadiums. The sun reflecting off the water on overhead shots at stadiums with water around them. Windows on the skyscrappers have that glare of the sun on their windows depending on sun position.

It's so hard to see what will be possible this upcoming generation. Some developer is going to do something we never thought was possible for a video game. Hopefully it comes early in the generation so others can copy and raise the quality across the board early.

There is the thing about the new generation of games. The graphical leap is not going to be as great as last gen was from the ps2 era but the thing that is going to be a heap leap is the enemy / opponent AI is going to be vastly better and more life like than last gen.

That is what i can't wait to see what developers do. The graphics are already great and really don't need to get better. Ill take smarter and more life like AI so people can stop complaining about come back AI and have it be real AI that adjust to your gameplay style.

Not just those two things either, you could point arrows to the entire backdrop.

Looks way too dark to me in those shots.
