NBA 2K14 News Post

Despite the struggles that NBA 2K is facing right now, the development team has still hit it home with presentation and commentary the past few years. The team of Kevin Harlan and Clark Kellogg, with recent additions Steve Kerr and Doris Burke, has become the so-called Holy Grail of sports video game commentary and everyone knows it. But when will 2K set the bar even higher? Even though they’re the best doesn’t mean that they can’t be better, which is exactly what they should do.

In NBA 2K14, the commentary is slowly becoming – dare I say it – stale.

Wouldn't it be sick if they used RealVoice for team specific commentators? Mike Breen and Walt Frazier for instance...

They need to add more elements and rotate them depending on what part of the season it is (in MyGM Mode).

I would love to hear the current MyGM All-Star voting numbers during a regular season game. I'd love to hear of any trades that have transpired. And coaching changes that have been made. Any retirements that have just been announced. Any trade speculation that is in the rumor mill. The playoff races that are coming up. The draft picks that are being hyped.

These are all stat overlays or talking points that could easily be added (considering all of the information has already been gathered by 2K in their game) and simply need to be coded, formatted and recorded by the commentators.

The halftime report needs serious work.

And I'd still LOVE a weekly report (like Chris Berman did in ESPN NFL 2K5) highlighting the aforementioned NBA news and updates.

These are all things that could immensely help presentation and keep it fresh, no matter how many times you've heard the overlays and recordings.

Exactly. A good number of players who want all this will probably wind up clicking right through it after a few games. One of the few things Live does well is the Halftime report. Not so much the execution of it (the commentary is still very stilted) but just the overlays and the amount of information. Like someone said earlier, if 2K could somehow snag a TNT license and incorporate their crew into the game, it would be magnificent. They could treat it just like the voices they have now and simply lift real audio from old broadcasts. Just create models a little prettier than Doris Burke, and we'd have an awesome halftime and hopefully postgame wrap up show. For all the hoopla over NFL 2K5, they did have the ESPN license for a time and did nothing with it for their basketball game...

Oh, and can we please get the Players of the Week and Months right in NBA Today and quickplay, please? They should be synced to the NBA's selections, not just randomly picked except in the fantasy Assocation/MyGM/MyCareer modes.

I don't know if I'd say that. I found NFL 2K5 to be ahead of its time with Sportscenter, Chris Berman, and whatnot. The NBA game never went that deep, but they were slowly ramping up their ESPN usage until they lost the rights to EA. NBA 2K had official ESPN overlays, music, introductions, and talent (Kevin Frazier, Bill Walton, and Tom Tolbert all making appearances).

2k's commentary is great but every thing else is horrible. The statistic slides are very bad, they don't resemble anything you would see on TV. I'd really love to see real players photos in game instead of the 2k rendered ones.

I'm not sure if this goes under presentation. It could be "Sounds". There needs to be more reaction from the crowd on big time plays and buzzer-beaters. The crowd needs to be more into in playoff games and big season games with rivalries. It's one of the fhing NBA Live 10 did well and why I still play that game. Like on poster on here said, "Game 6 and 7s" don't feel any different from a normal game. Commentary does get stale.

And for the love of mankind, please do the team starting lineup intros with the PA announcer.

2K has the best commentary in sports games hands down. I only wish madden could be half, or even 1/4 as good . That presentation sucks.

Thank you! Who cares about presentation when you can't even get in a game online, or the lag is so horrible that the game is basically unplayable? I pray that either 2k fixes this mess or the consumers wise up and stop lining 2k's pockets until they produce a FULL game.

I agree...as playing MyCareer for the bucks i almost know what they are going to say but it does not bother me..2K getting a TNT intergation would really make the presentation really cool. Too bad EA already has the ESPN license..just my two cents

there's no reason the crowd should be dead silent when you're the home team and enjoying a 15pt lead towards the end of the game. DEAD SILENT.

also, that lower third scorebug is entirely way too big. i always let it slide because ps3 only displayed 720p, but that **** needs to go.

when i played the live demo, i was very envious of the menu graphics and the overall presentation. 2k needs to hire some real designers and not just let the 3d game designers handle it.

2K has bigger issues to fix, like VC, Server save files, missing game modes (next gen). The presentation is still 10x better than Madden. I'd like a fully functional product first.

# 53 Jumpman232 @ 01/08/14 12:21 AM
For me, they don't have to have a license such as TNT but just make it as close to real TV presentation as possible, sorta like how Madden does mimicking the CBS presentation.

Replays in my opinion should only happen when there are breaks in action unless it was a ferocious slam, incredible shot, etc. Those Nike replays can go if you ask me.

The crowd must be felt. If I'm on a huge run playing great defense, I don't want my crowd to be close to non-existent, possibly adding team specific chants? I know down here at the FedEx Forum we have multiple chants we cheer when the Grizzlies are playing great or even if we are trying to get them back into the game. Same thing with playoffs except there should be more intensity and much more loud, OKC should feel like your playing in OKC, Sac-Town should feel like Sac-Town.

Game winners/Post Game winner emotions needs LOTS of work. Simple as that.

In my GM, somebody mentioned that they should have a weekly wrap-up like ESPN NFL 2K5.. YES! Talk about teams on winning streaks, cold streaks, players who are hot, injuries in the league, the rumor mill, talk about the pertaining to the playoffs and all-star weekend when its that time.

Same thing when you are playing a my GM game, they should be talking about the league and what's going on, and how your players and whoever you are playing against players have been playing in previous games. This should go on throughout the game, not just when there is a short break from action.

Just my 2 cents.

2k's presentation is incredible! The fact that you are spoiled by constantly experiencing new images and video and entertainment all over the internet shouldn't mask you from having realistic expectations in quality. But apparently it does.

You asking for 2k to step up it's game is selfish and wrong. I can understand you not wanting to see a Madden scenario of the same game being thrown out there w/ a couple new features every year but 2k jumped ahead so far in presentation and overall gameplay a couple years ago that i think if anyone deserves a pass it's them.

The Show and 2k are fantastic games and i will not critique them when every other studio and sporting franchise is so flawed.

while you might be right, settle down lol.

the article isnt "selfish" or "wrong" lol, its not like this is a moral issue..... While presentation is the last thing 2k should focus on for next year, he can still ask 2K to step up in other areas and in no way be "wrong." Also, the fact that other games are worse is not relevant. A franchise can always improve and just because they are the best doesn't mean they can just sit back and go "well we are better than NBA live lol."

Know nothing of basketball but Ivr been watching chris smoove for a while and I'm so jealous of this franchise.

I'm a hockey fan and its night and day difference between NHL series and this.

# 56 ThePsychicSaw @ 01/08/14 02:26 PM
Can you all adopt hockey and help push 2k in making a hockey franchise again?

Are you SERIOUS?!?!?! Now THAT is one of the dumbest things I've read on here in a while. It's "selfish" and "wrong" to expect a company to improve? Do you know what any of those words mean? Because I can barely put into words how wrong your post is. Just because other games aren't as good in some aspects then you're saying 2k shouldn't improve, and everyone should just give them a trophy and pretend everything they did is 100% flawless. Companies would get NOWHERE if they followed your perspective. I guess LeBron doesn't need to step up his game because he's the best in the league at the moment. I guess the Ravens didn't need to step up their game this year since they were at the top last year. Oh, wait. They didn't even make the playoffs.

Posts like yours just boggle my mind how someone could possibly say that it's wrong to want to improve a product, and then to call the person "wrong" and "selfish" because they want improvements? I'd say your logic behind saying that 2k deserves no criticism because EA has struggled is flawed, but that'd be giving your post too much credit, because there's clearly no logic involved.

Someone posted this earlier, how much manpower is going to be used for presentation if you watch it once or twice then just button click through it the next 6 months.

My favorite part of the playoffs is the "40 Games in 40 Nights" / "Inside the NBA" presentation on TNT...

It would be cool if some of THAT kind of thing ("Gone Fishin' for instance) was implemented in the 2k playoffs, to help differentiate the look and feel of that versus the regular season...
