"Today I am sad to announce that we will not be publishing a new college football game next year, and we are evaluating our plan for the future of the franchise. This is as profoundly disappointing to the people who make this game as I expect it will be for the millions who enjoy playing it each year. I’d like to explain a couple of the factors that brought us to this decision.
We have been stuck in the middle of a dispute between the NCAA and student-athletes who seek compensation for playing college football. Just like companies that broadcast college games and those that provide equipment and apparel, we follow rules that are set by the NCAA – but those rules are being challenged by some student-athletes. For our part, we are working to settle the lawsuits with the student-athletes. Meanwhile, the NCAA and a number of conferences have withdrawn their support of our game. The ongoing legal issues combined with increased questions surrounding schools and conferences have left us in a difficult position – one that challenges our ability to deliver an authentic sports experience, which is the very foundation of EA SPORTS games.
At EA SPORTS, college football has always been a labor of love, and it is unfortunate that these business and legal issues have impacted our ability to make next year’s game. This franchise has been developed by a team that is deeply committed to the tradition and culture of this sport – that’s why fans have always loved it. We are working to retain the talented people who are part of the team by placing them elsewhere within the EA SPORTS organization.
In the meantime, we will continue to be connected and engaged with our fans who are playing EA SPORTS NCAA Football. Our decision does not affect our commitment to NCAA Football 14 and the consumers who love playing the game."
How are you getting any of that from any of this news?

This is clearly a case of players receiving compensation for the use of their likeness in a game. The NCAA is receiving heat for the system they have in place. EA has to pay the NCAA rights for the rights to the schools trademarks etc. Maybe EA can work something out in the future if the NCAA switches over to something similar as an Olympic style amateur compensation format. Then we could see EA make NCAA games again with total likeness of every player. Clearly I not saying anytime soon, and it based on the NCAA pulling their heads out of their you know what.
People cheering this announcement make me sick. Some people actually got some enjoyment out of this game, some people do not get hung up on the flaws and can actually enjoy it for what it is. Good people with families will be looking for work soon, it's just a game to us but it's a paycheck to them.
I have great memories with this series and I will miss it.

I never want to see honest people laid off however what EA was doing was wrong and I stand on the side of righteousness. Exploitation is wrong sad the people who aren't jerking the "SAs" around are the ones who suffer the most. Which unfortunately is usually the case.
However nobody should act like we weren't fully aware what was taking place. Like you didn't know who #5 6' RB from CA @ USC was or #16 6'5 QB from LA @ Tennessee.

Eh, you shouldn't generalize so much with the usage of "honest people" like we know what you mean, too. There is other people that lost their jobs besides developers and higher ups.
For example, receptionists, research people, etc.... with families to pay for.
Cusefan nailed it, it's a game for us, it was some peoples livelihood for them.

Wouldn't all the employees you listed fall under the umbrella of "honest people". I said it to be all encompassing. I can't go through and point out every employee and their personal involvement.

Could the NCAA not put some text into the paperwork these athletes sign when enrolling to allow for them to use their name/likeness for marketing purposes?
So basically anyone wanting to pay college sports would either agree to allow it, or not play.
I understand both sides of the agreement, but I think scholarships and a stipend for meals is a lot. I understand the school is making a lot of money off of some of these kids, but you have to think...for every Johnny Football there are several hundred Joe and Jane Athletes at just that school, then think about that across ALL college athletics.
I don't see anyway they can pay any one sport athlete more/less than another sport (a football player would be paid the same as a volleyball player) without further backlash. I also don't see how one school could offer more to their players than another (players at UL Lafayette would make the same as those from LSU).
So if you want to pay all athletes based on the amount of money all colleges take in, then fine...but would it really be enough to help these kids out? I know "every little bit helps" but think about the amount of money divided amongst the number of athletes.
Also, then should student council or other clubs/affiliations get compensated too? I feel like there would be Pandoras box full of individuals trying to get compensation...and I think many would have just a good of a case as most of the athletes who would be getting paid.
By agreeing to the scholarship you sign away your likeness rights, not a bad idea ^^^
That's a terrible idea and I hope a group of attorneys never let this happen. I'm starting to change my tune. Don't pay the players, just allow them to accept money from 3rd parties. Then everybody is happy.

So, basically, because they work at the same company and building, from top to bottom, throw them all under the bus and drive over in reverse with people you don't know.
Sounds like a game plan, but something that I was never taught to do. Guilt by association.
I do agree with paying for their likeness and similar things to that, but outside of that, I don't agree with paying them any more.
I say this as an ASU grad and fan...that I hated Sam Keller when he was our starting QB in '05...and I hate him even more now. This arrogant punk signed up for this lawsuit (with Ed O'Bannon) as a money grub. Like it really hurt them that a video game company made a game a used their "likeness"? I know that's not the point....but if Keller was good enough to make it in NFL, he'd have never gone this route. Same with O'Bannon in the NBA.
Keller was / is a coke head who wouldn't show up for ASU team workouts in the offseason....partied all night during the season....lost the respect of his ASU teammates....then got beat out by a Freshman (Rudy Carpenter) and threw a fit like a complete baby. His dad, had connections with Oak Raiders, got Bill Callahan to give him a shot at Neb. We all know how that turned out - karma got him, and he got injured half way through a mediocre season. The dope moved back to Scottsdale, AZ and was seen partying all over town. Then he caught wind of this lawsuit and added his name = which really got this going b/c two athletes from two different sports were on it. Just a money grab. That's all this was to them.
EA, by making a better game, was following the NCAA. What about TV networks using players likeness on TV commercials to sell their game to viewing public all week? Does ABC / ESPN / CBS / FOX pay these "student athletes"? Why just go after video game companies? Greed. The consumer was really hurt on this. College football will take a hit on this. At one time (late 90s)....college football players considered EA's game to a huge compliment to be in the game (remember when you could only edit rosters for up to 10 teams?).....now.....today's players are RIDICULOUS. They want something for not doing anything at all. EA deserves to make a profit on this....they did all the work....and the NCAA never told them they were wrong for doing what they were doing....with their athletes.
NCAA athletes will NEVER get paid. NEVER. Why? Because if they aren't considered "amateur"....then the Federal Gov't views the universities / colleges differently and then they will be taxed differently (much like corporations are). Universities will do away with their athletic programs before they ever pay the athletes. The athletes and their programs are small potatoes compared to a university's purpose. This threatens their very livelihood. They will not tolerate that. University's primary purpose is education and research. Athletic programs are simply in place to help bring exposure and build camaraderie and spirit on the campus. That's it.
Today's athletes are punks. They are more intent on destroying something instead of trying to build. This EA-NCAA-athletes lawsuit is just one little small example in our society. Feel free to drive off a cliff Sam Keller. You piece of trash.

Couldn't have said it better myself. And yes, for the reasons you mentioned, the university system is about as likely to pay players as the Catholic Church is likely to endorse abortion. The other day, the Big 10 Commissioner Tom Delaney pretty much said as much. If the Big 10 is willing to cut off their cash cow, so will all the others (except for maybe the SEC, since they care little about academics). They simply CAN'T pay players, and they won't. If they have to shut it all down, they will. They aren't bluffing.

What are you talking about? I'm not happy anybody is losing their jobs. However I can't support the exploitation of human beings either.
