NBA 2K14 News Post

2K Sports has released the first full details on this year's NBA 2K14 gameplay with a new Developer Diary video.

Mike Wang, Lead Gameplay Designer, addressed the skepticism that people might think the game will be a minor upgrade saying, "We really wanted to stomp that right away and make sure everyone understood that NBA 2K14 will be a fully upgraded game."

Rob Jones, Senior Producer, said the AI is much improved on both offense and defense.

"Spacing is much butter," Jones said. "I think this year is the first time we really got a feeling 'these guys know what I'm trying to do' (in regards to their floor spacing."

Wang said attacking the basket is "more gripping" and "you can't just go anywhere you want with the ball". Players attacking the rim should expect more contact in the paint, as it should be.

2K looked at the blocking system and made improvements and "even rewrote the system."

Producer Jerson Sapida said, "We're just ensuring the user can get the best possible block attempt that they can make."

2K, in the past, artificially dropped shooting percentages when players drove towards the rim. This year, says Mike Wang, the approach is different. This year the contact in the paint, the fouls, the blocks, etc. will all be much more natural and authentic to what you would expect to see.

"To me, it's one of the biggest upgrades the series has seen in a long time," Wang said.

We are expecting even more NBA 2K14 info soon, as the game is slated for release on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on October 1.

While the (gameplay) video was OK, it didnt met my expectations, was expecting it to be a truely insight and indepth one ... then again, how indepth can they be without also releasing written articles, showing comparison sequences (like Da-Czar) or some under the hood things, thus I doubt this last thing would appeal to the casuals or most of the target.

Anyways, looking forward to further details, news and videos.

P.S:
Also, these type of videos are supposed to not only inform the audience but should also aid to hype and sell the game. I, personaly, didnt felt that with it.

Would suggest 2k to use some of the reactions of people who went to events and played the early builds, even more since all love it. That should have been the last scenes of the gameplay video with a few sparkled around after devs comments.

IMHO, specially given how many seem not to appreciate the outstanding effort that was applied and considering how the game is more like "great balance and fun feeling", would of been pure gold to showcase the fans feelings and reactions.

Am no marketing guru tho, just expressing what I was looking for and what moves me ... and maybe, others too.

It was kind of nice just to see an officially released bit of concrete footage to begin with, but I feel where you're coming from. 2K has a history of releasing pretty awesome pieces of pre-game insights (the in-depth controls video of 2K12, the very detailed written developer insights with video visual aides from other releases). I've been kind of wondering why they went with their current video interview route where less information and footage is pushed forth than ever before.

That said, all bets are off this year due to the next generation debut. Usually I balk at pre-emptive and overzealous hype from 2K employs and usually I'd have drawn conclusions (for better or for worse) about a brand as a whole by now, but I really have no idea what to expect for the PS4 and XBoxOne versions of NBA 2K. I'm not buying a new console annnnytime soon, but I'm hoping 2K comes through with a mega legit next generation product anyway, just to have some faith restored.

Given how blown away I was with the next gen graphics shown on the LBJ trailer and considering how graphics wasnt the focused selling point of the new consoles and their prowess, am hyped with some unusualy high expectations.

Add in that I can appreciate what was done with current gen and they are really high, trying to bring them down to reality but we shall see.

Y'all, as I said in my impressions... the feel of the game is solid. I know 2K has been using balanced, but for me solid fits better, why? Well I think its because when you play defense you have the ability to stop the offensive player with your body giving that solid feeling which occurs from that balancing the DEVs did.

While w/ 13 you felt you were playing with dice when trying to create/get contact w/ a defensive player, not so in 14... I definitely had the ability to make contact even if just by being in the way.

Dribbling thru traffic usually ended up with either a poke, steal or just losing the ball.

Dunking in traffic... as said, I only saw a couple in halfcourt settings... again cause that D was there. Expect the feeling of having to fight to score against a good defensive team.

Looks like great stuff. Can't Wait!

Really 2k! We fixed this, We added that. The truth is that 2k had no comp since 2k11 and they took a long vacation. Now they have to compete against themselves due to next gen coming and the reemergence of Live. They are trying to patch a game with crap the game should've had 2 years ago or fix with a patch or two. No one should be giddy about the changes, If anything we should be pissed for being screwed over like this. I will be gameflying this one first.

Good video. This is like a high level overall what we improved, and I like it. The details are in the gameplay like playbook, AI. I think they need an insight on:

  • Playbook
  • Controls
  • Association
  • My team
  • Crews
  • Online Association
  • Presentation
  • Accessories

Jay I always dig your feedback on 2k. Thanks for providing the info you have. I actually hope the game is more balanced than it is solid. Why? Because I don't want to be working well crafted pnr plays or post plays only to be shut down by some kid online spamming the block or steal button.

It is important to make defense more effective, but the truth about basketball is that the perfect offense will beat the perfect defense every time. Or better put...there is no defense for the perfect offense.

I want 2k to reward the smarter, more fundamental user. Not tune the gameplay to give a pre packaged advantage to either the offense or defense. Frankly that's what i want from all sports games. MLB the show does that the best. 2k does a moderate job and EA sports is notoriously awful at creating balanced sports sims.

Here is hoping 2k 14 is more "the show" than " madden".

Just wondering, is the running hook that goes in 90% of the time for every player still in the game or atleast has been toned down signifcantly?

THIS is how the developer insights should look like! All of them!
This was more like the old written insights used to be, but in video form, which is way more informative and hypes me up for the game even more!

Nice video! Really liked how they talked about the contact inside and defense, that was my main complain for 2k13 gameplay, hopefully thats the return of the defense

GOOD VID by 2K, WE know it lack of info, but it is coming now, with 12 days left, for the new game, The game is looking good, DEFENSE was the main issue in 2k13, offense was easy , especially in the paint, Like @JWILL55 said , It is gonna be fun this yr ONLINE, especially in OA, Looking foward to it, IF they have CLASSICS, as u can play randoms, ALL IS GOOD

I believe they kept in the option for 2k13 controls Trey if that's what you are worried about. Thought I heard that from someone at 2k here.

Spamming the block button will result in a collision, that much is certain. Spamming steal I don't think will cause any type of advantage for the defense, I didn't have success in the build I played on (spamming steal).

TBH I didn't see it once while playing or watching any else playing. TBH again, I also didn't try to do it either. But hopefully its been toned down, which I am pretty sure that it has been. I wish it would be taken out for 1-3 spots and only left for the bigs, but then Magic wouldn't be able to do it. Exceptions would have to be made for him though.

I just hope that MyCareer has more stuff to do after the first 2-3 years finish. Gets boring when you're a great player, but don't get any endorsements or anything after awhile.

This is what in talking about regarding gameplay videos..sure its a dev video but various gameplay interactions blocking,steals,etc..might he a glorified upgrade but a good upgrade indeed! Should hold me over tor a year til I go next-gen..

Don't want to drink the kool aid yet (as I see an ad for kool-aid appear on the page as I'm writing this...), but a lot of the issues I had with 2k13 were things that you really couldn't "see" but you could feel. So even though the the Dev Insight was pretty light on content, I'm actually optimistic about what they had to say.
