NBA 2K14 News Post

The achievement list teased the announcement earlier, but 2K Sports has now confirmed NBA 2K14 will feature Crew Mode. As Shade8780 points out, it looks like it could be current-gen only, at the very least we won't know about its status on next-gen just yet.

For those asking, yes full court 5v5. Community Team up guys were playing a 3v3 halfcourt game. CREWS 3v3 or 5v5 at this time.

Props to those couple of guys, but that doesn't give me a feeling of confidence or trust regarding what 2K was trying to pull on us this year at all.

Now it makes COMPLETE sense why "Crew" was shown running on a small screen in the background while a YouTuber talked it up in the foreground. They didn't really want to show it because they knew it would demo badly and what they had didn't look like Crew at all.

A week of coded hype for this? Yikes.

My theory is this:

2K didn't want to invest too much effort on current-gen 2K14, but wanted to retain its sales numbers since current gen consoles still have a massive install base, and current gen 2K14 will still make up a mass majority of their projected sales.

A full featured Crew would take too much resources from their other next-gen SKU, but a leaderboards Blacktop mode renamed "Crew" would be a huge marketing bullet point for the end-of-life platform, since it's one of the most requested features and they thought they could pass it off as Crew-lite with some minor tweaks. Enlist some Youtube A-listers and the rest is history.

Call me cynical, but this does feel a bit like a cynical money grab.
You are completely right, and it is a money grab. What i'm so mad about is that they played it up as crew so everyone would essentially throw money at them while they're giving us half of what was promised to us. I can guarantee that the code for the crew we know and love is sitting on a hard drive somewhere in 2k and they'll "fix" the 2k14 trash in 2k15 because this console craziness will be over by them. It just feels cheap and like they're playing us as customers.

@MarvinOida Shouldn't be that hard they did it before, 2-3 years of time to figure out how to best configure the code to make it work properly. No excuses, don't make excuses for them. Just saying, I'm still very much elated to see/hear how it works fully though and I'll remain hopeful for a Xbox One version of Crew.

Pretty hard, you have 10 different myCareer players info having to be spread to 9 other players over the Internet. And also consider the Internet connection. It's something the average video gamer doesn't understand.

You seem new and do not know how marketing goes.

Okay, so you're saying that even though they can do 3 v 3, it's too hard to do 5 v 5 even though they've had 3 years to code it. To emphasize this point, shake and kspade said they wouldn't stand for a 3 v 3 game mode and demanded 5 v 5. 2k gave them that and is now advertising a 5 v 5 mode. How are they gonna have that if the game releases in October unless 1) they already have the coding ready for 5 v 5 or 2) the coding isn't as difficult as you make it seem.
PS: Of course I'm new congrats you can read the box with my name in it

Well, remember that online has been completely rebuilt in 2K12. And you said, Online Team Up being coded to be Crew, so first off, I'm using your words. Also, they have about 7-8 months to code everything (guessing here) and then test and edit. You maybe see it as easy, but everything you see has been early early development, that explains why the online menu looks exactly like 2K13, why you only seen 3v3, etc. You're judging on an incomplete build shown off not even at the right "hype time"

I will agree that the timing isn't right but judging now vs next month isn't right.

They already know what we wanted in crew (it was in 2k11) and they didn't deliver once again. Nobody asked for a improved blacktop mode with leaderboards and calling it crew. If thats all the fans of crew mode get after having waited all this time, then all I can say is shame on 2k. Its like a slap in the face.

It looks to me like all they really want to do is just milk their new VC system some more, instead of actually giving its customers and fans what they want.

I'm not gonna beg and plea for something that should of been delivered like it was many years ago. I will buy other games that interest me and check to see what Live 14 has to offer this year in terms of gameplay and great online modes. As someone else said EA already has a clubs mode in both FIFA and NHL, which is like crew so hopefully they add that to their NBA game.

Seriously tho, I was just sitting here thinking , only 2k would say they're giving the fans what they want and completely f it up . It's incredible , they know what we loved , but they tried to give us a slightly upgraded blacktop mode and expected us to throw money and praise their way? In their eyes , we must be stupid , can't imagine they thought anyone who enjoyed the mode and had a brain would be all for this.

That being said , 5v5 could be identical to 2k11 and I would apologize with my $65 , but they sure as hell ain't answering the right questions and putting an end to negative speculation.

Real talk, 2k could come back with something in a week that will make me bite my words. I'm just saying that there's no reason not to have the mode we all want back when they've had all of 2012 and most of 2013 to get it right.
As for the development of the mode, you can't say that what you saw took up a major portion of 2k's schedule. It was the same court as blacktop, similar menus, the same clothes/hairstyles for all the players. Virtually everything was the same except for the stamina bar (should've been there already), the logo (already in the game) and the crew management settings. I can't say for the gameplay but that should be there anyway. 2k13 blacktop mode they managed to produce in a year of development, they should be able produce something somewhat innovative in the same about of time.

Think Team-Up mode, but with your created myplayer and a group of peoples other created myplayer on the same team. You made the court, name, logo, colors and went against other crews.

2K should say something in the next days (its gonna be weeks as Path to greatness is the next marketed thing I think)

I do believe what we saw was a big WIP build, nothing close to the final build (hopefully.)

I'm saying the reason why it took long is that it was a online beta build, I know for a fact that everything was rebuild and tested on. I'd rather see them improve the entire thing one by one vs what people claim this as half assed on the final builds on 2K12 and 2K13. Takes time to perfect a method, and I think the devs were ready.

But why test the mode one by one, taking out this and that when they could cut to the mode that they KNOW everyone or almost everyone enjoys. I don't understand why they couldn't use the key features of 2k11 crew mode such as the customization of it all (ie. hacked players) and fix the bugginess of all that instead of rebuilding from the the ground up. They already have the blueprints to the mode, but instead of using them they decided to try and build the same thing from scratch. I know its not a simple copy and paste of the code but don't they at least have an idea of where they want to go with this?

Probably cause its 2K, they don't wanna get everything out at one moment until its good to them. They probably rebuilt everything cause I'm expecting it was most likely old, disk consuming code. I recall 2K12 having DREAMCAST online code.

What about ratings?

# 253 KingJames6 @ 08/15/13 12:22 AM
I hope we can play with regular teams.. Having these maxed out My Players takes all the damn fun out. Don't get me wrong I love My Player but its a bit unfair always getting ripped and having guys drain 80 3s a game... If its an even playing field where we can play true fundamental basketball then im loving it!!

it isn't crew! the reason everyone loves both my player and crew was the 1) customization of it all (your own jerseys and logo with your own colors) and 2) the feel of a real nba environment like the crowd, announcers, replays, and plays. They like seeing themselves as real nba players and 3) the teamwork of it all. Having modify your offense/defense according to your opponent, having to play through foul trouble, and running fast paced offense or slowing it down. This mode 2k released had more of a playground feel than an nba feel. 3 v 3 blacktop mode doesn't have any of those features and therefore I see it as not crew.

5v5 hadn't been shown off man. Not from either camp. And the 3v3 is like pick up games. Wait man, hasn't been even 12 hours. Understand the frustration but give it a break.

it did lol. i agree, 2k is taking their damn time to give us this mode. I saw a post last night saying that they're probably giving us a watered-down version of crew first and then saving the full-on mode for when next-gen has basically taken the reins in 2k15. Like I said before, I believe that the extremely early version of next-gen crew is sitting on a hard drive in 2k studios somewhere and they're gonna come in and finally give us what we want. One can dream. At least this blacktop version is better than nothing

# 257 saaddzz @ 08/15/13 12:49 AM
Man that SUCKS. crew will be on blacktop. That made my hype for 2k14 go away. I think they wont make 2k14 better. 2K11 is STILL the best game.
