NCAA Football 14 News Post

The Southeastern Conference announced today that it will not, as a conference, license its trademarks in the EA Sports NCAA Football video game. This decision does not involve member universities as of yet, as this only involves the SEC conference name and logo.

However, this could be the type of event that opens the flood gates to future defections from the game. While the future of the College Football series looked somewhat on stable ground after EA and the CLC agreed to a three year deal, this news rattles the very foundations and future of the series.

"Each school makes its own individual decision regarding whether or not to license their trademarks for use in the EA Sports game(s)," the SEC said in a statement. "The Southeastern Conference has chosen not to do so moving forward. Neither the SEC, its member universities, nor the NCAA have ever licensed the right to use the name or likeness of any student to EA Sports."

This is another move in response to the Ed O'Bannon case which could end collegiate video games forever given unfavorable rulings from the courts.

Today's news only brings more questions as to the viability of the product going forward.

UPDATE: ESPN's Kristi Dosh is reporting that the Big XII says they have yet to make a decision on the inclusion of their marks in future College Football video games.

UPDATE #2: ESPN is now reporting the Big Ten is out as well.

UPDATE #3: In a statement to Joystiq, a CLC representative said "150 collegiate institutions, including SEC schools, have approved renewal of the EA college football license, to begin with the 2015 edition. As with any licensed product, individual schools continue to make their own decisions."

We are putting in a question with the CLC on whether this means schools can still opt out of the game at any time or not as the wording certainly seems to leave that possibility open.

Update #4: Jeremy Fowler of CBS is reporting that the Pac-12's marks also won't be in the new game.

Just wish they would re-release NCAA 14 for the PS4 and XBOX 1 in the fall.

Ha, I guess I was thinking a little broader - as in, re-discovering totally non-sports genres like RPG's, adventure games, etc.

But I agree - sports gaming started a long, inexorable decline toward the dark ages the day the NFL went exclusive. That was the canary in the coal mine, so to speak - signified how big a business sports games were, and then everything that has followed since is just a signpost along the road downhill...

Not going to argue, but I for one am not giving up hope for Sports gaming quite yet. It's getting pretty close though =/

I have a good gaming pc, the money I would have put into buying a ps4 I can use for a new video card now.
Ditto....the one constant with my gaming has been the NCAA game. Everything else was just an aside.

I probably will end up getting a PS4 but with the way things are looking I won't be pre-ordering.

Thankfully I never got rid of my PS2 and all the NCAA games I have with it.

I would normally agree with this sentiment, but in this case, I have to say it's bad karma coming back on EA Sports. They've knowingly put out a shoddy, half-working product for the past several years.

To the point where even a hardcore NCAA football fan like me hasn't bought or have returned the game now for last 2 years. I bought a PS3 mainly for this series, and IF it was up to par, I would be buying a XB1 or PS4 for it as well.

We the consumer aren't missing out on much with this series being canned.

Owen Good posted a story stating only one school will be removed from next year's game and the SEC will in fact be in.

All of this according to a source of course. Said news would be confirmed by EA soon.

....but there are hundreds of posts in this thread that say the game is dead. So many people and here said that the loss of the league logos would lead to the end of the series. They couldnt have possibly been wrong, could they?

Not at OS. That would never happen here. I was told the sky was falling yesterday and I expect that sky to fall. LOL.

Well this is good news and makes the damage minimal to the '15 edition. I know the conferences do add to the landscape but as long as all the teams are there (with the exception of one) and the conference groupings should still be the same, I am a happy camper, seeing how this could have really turned pretty bad.

I will not get NCAA 15 if ONE team dropped, one team dropped there is my declaration of the game...Also I am not getting it for PS4 unless they drop the price and that is not happening for a very long time.

With all due respect to the author of that article, I'll wait to hear it straight from EA before I believe it. The SEC was out but now they are back in? I guess that that could be a legal thing (they already committed to be in the 2015 game) but at this point who knows.....a good question would be at what point does EA need a firm commitment from conferences and schools before the game goes into development. At some point they would have to tell schools and conferences that their either in or out.

I wonder if the Pac-12 and Big 10 and the missing school will re-consider their positions in advance of the release. In the past FIFA has signed deal with specific teams and actually added them the same year as free DLC.

May be good news for a patch this year as well?

# 400 BenGerman @ 08/15/13 10:34 PM
Thank goodness. Looks like we will definitely be getting a '15.
