MLB 13 The Show Review (PS3)

Your opinion of MLB 13 The Show is going to depend, in large part, on what kind of consumer you are. If you embrace “the new” and thrive off of flashiness, or drool over revealed feature-sets, you are probably going to feel slightly disappointed with what The Show offers this year. Those feelings are completely understandable.

However, if you simply appreciate quality titles, regardless of how much they’ve changed, you will almost certainly come to see MLB 13 The Show as the best console baseball game to date.

For one, it has changed each year since 10... that version still had a pretty big "suction" threshold when you got close to the ball landing zone. That is very small now.

Secondly, there will probably never be fully manual fielding. Assist is needed to even make some areas of fielding possible. I actually tried it at the community event last year, with no assists and even with an immediate camera transition, you don't have enough time to react. That is why manual fielding is possible in RTTS, because there is no camera transition to contend with.

Even with that, the fielding assist has been minimized, and at the same time considering each fielder's reaction rating. There is an recognizable reaction time (or lack of) amongst players who are not the best defensively; Miguel Cabrera for instance. Overall, there is an assist, but it is not much more than a switching control the the player... outside of infield liners, if the ball is hit and you don't move the stick, you won't field the ball even tho control is switched to that player.

Then there is the new button accuracy throwing, which adds a whole new aspect and difficulty to fielding. Reviews are mixed about the look of the meter, but it definitely changes the way fielding 'feels'.

I've been buying The show since about 06 on the PS2, it's the best baseball game hands down. Aside from the bad commentary, this game feels like an actual upgrade from 12. The only things i wish for are more logos (EvoShield, Under Armour, etc.) and dynamic commentary, sort of like NBA 2K13's commentary where it all just flows together nicely. Overall it's the best baseball game and I'll keep supporting!

Best sports game ever!

Everything is refined this year, apart from new commentary I don't know what else these guys can do.

Yeah I've found turning double plays a bit tricky, especially ones up the middle. After I've set the meter for the toss to second I sometimes try to start preloading the throw to first, but instead overwrite my initial command and end up just throwing to first. But I like the new control.

First time since '09 I haven't found the game to be highly over rated. They finally made some much needed improvements. Great game

Can,t replace slow base runners with bench players. How do I do this? Can replace pitchers, batters and defensive players butt not able to replace runners.

Same way you do a batter. Offensive substitution. Select the runner, select his replacement.

Hey guys,

I think MLB the show is the best mob games in years. However I am a HUGE baseball fan and player and there are some minor things that I would love to have in the game. One is to allow a catchers visit to the mound. Also, necklaces should be added. RTTS, as good as it is, could use a little more realism. If you get called up and your an infielder, it shouldn't be because the MLB pitcher got hurt. They have to do better with the ratings. Too many players are 99 overall. For diamond dynasty they should have a couple pre made logos you can use. More jerseys should be available to select for each team. Overall a great game though and I can't wait until the OS roster comes out!!!!!

Nah Infinite should be number that game is the top of the mountain when it comes to this console generation. Just my opinion though.

I guess I need to get around to trying out one of the BioShock games. I've never even touched one before.

Definitely nice to see 2013 get some much-deserved love though.

Great review. MLB The Show is the reason I bought a PS3. I've been playing MLB 10 up until a couple weeks ago, at that point I picked up MLB 12 used for $8.00. I downloaded the updated rosters and off I went. I like baseball but I'm not a fanatic so I usually am a year behind with the games. However I'll probably skip MLB 13 and go with 14 on the PS4. I have to commend the makers of this game, they do a fantastic job. It's very satisfying to play a game that captures the true feel of the sport. It's just a pleasure to play MLB The Show.
