MLB 13 The Show News Post

ESPN's Jon Robinson recently sat down with Ramone Russell, Community Manager for MLB 13 The Show, as they discuss the new hitting system, characterizing push/pull hitters, re-balancing and re-tooling the pitching game, Road to the Show, Playoff mode, Franchise mode, online, over 1,000 brand new presentations, baserunning, and more.

Quote:
ESPN: One of the first announcements Sony made about "MLB 13" was the addition of Playoff mode. What details can you divulge about this new feature?

Ramone: With the postseason mode, we have a new playoff presentation package. What we wanted to do was give you a way to jump right into the playoffs and experience what it's like in a different situation. In years past, you either had to make the playoffs in Road to the Show, which could take years, or you had to play through all 162 games of your franchise. Now you can pick any team and it kicks off this playoff presentation package that you only get in postseason mode. We recorded every game of the World Series this year, and that's the audio you're getting for the postseason. The first strike of a playoff game, the crowd goes absolutely nuts, and that's the kind of thing you'll get this year. They play the national anthem, you'll see the players without their ball caps, and you'll see tons on animations and scenes that you just won't see in a regular game. That's the whole focus of the postseason, to make it feel like a completely different experience.

Is it just something we have to learn the "touch" for?

There is a meter for it.

Sounds great. I love that they simplified base running. Can't wait to get my hands on the best sports game out there.

When you cue a steal does it impact the percentages of a pickoff? I have never felt like I'm anymore likely to get picked off when I've cued a steal in this game.

That.

That is just absolutely...sexual.

It makes my drive to get to the postseason (i play every inning of every game) all the more worthwhile

Great news! Especially the RTTS stuff, and the Playoff Mode stuff, sounds incredible.

But i really hope Bryce Harper doesn't follow through with 1 hand like in that picture.

I like the new pull/push tendencies but this comment on pulse pitching has me concerned:

we made pulse pitching a little easier, while making the other pitching methods just a little more difficult to balance out the game
I already had pitch control at 0 for pulse pitching last year and you still had a lot of control and never saw any wild pitches and very, very few bean balls. Making it easier is not what I want in this area. I've always felt the Show gave us too much control by default which led to very few user issued walks. This will only make that area worse for me unless they tuned it differently.

What difficulty level was this on? I use pulse on legend and hover right around 61-68% strikes depending on the pitcher. I have control @ 6 and consistency @ ~2...

Also, the slider for beanballs and wild pitches (aka missing far from your intended target) is the pitch consistency slider, lowering the control slider just makes you more prone to missing in a batter's hot zone...

Am I missing something? I have pretty much used auto base running as trying to manuever multiple baserunners at the same time was cumbersome(at least for my feeble mind . But even in auto I was able to cue up a lead off and steal with the L1 & L2 buttons.
I long for the Tony LaRussa days where you could control the lead runner until he scored and then the game automatically switched control to the next lead runner.

The postseason audio definitely sounds amazing

All-star pitching. I didn't want to go up in difficulty because I could get decent scores on All-Star and didn't want to have to face cpu hitters who could lay off every pitch on the black.

I'm just concerned with making it easier since it would produce less walks. I could understand toning down wild misses a bit to tone down the meatball pitches but general accuracy also needed to be toned down to create less perfect pitches. I realize this is a hard area to fine-tune to get proper walks and strikeouts but making it easier does concern me.

Ok, gotcha. The lack of wild pitches might also be related to the fine tuning of the catcher's slide technique... I remember in years past when the catcher would slide block and the ball would bounce off his leg and to the backstop quite frequently, now the catchers pretty much smother every ball in the dirt and the ball never rolls more than a few feet away. I have seen quite a few pass balls though...

Exactly. Every bit of it. I play every single inning/game also, and this just makes me all the more motivated to play franchise mode as soon as I get home on March 5th.

And march 6th
and march 7th...

Reading the RTTS piece of this, it mentioned the sounds you will hear. Fans, the occasional commentators and the opposing catcher and umpire! I wonder what the catcher is going to say to me the next at bat after i drop a homerun off them

I am also concerned by the statement that pulse pitching was made easier. I use pulse pitching on legend mode right now and still only throw a max of 2 or 3 walks per game, and that's not often.

One thing that would really raise the realism to another level would be having pitchers that walk lots of guys in real life really have the same tendencies in the game, even when controlled by a human. I know there's a fine line between too much control and not enough, but seriously, I don't need to be throwing strikes every pitch to the point that I feel relieved when I give up a walk, since it's so unrealistic with no walks.

I agree. I've always played on all settings default HoF. I'm not a fan of pulse pitching being made easier. If anything, it needs to be even more difficult. Not enough user issued walks... even when consistently trying to work the corners.

I love the idea of the new steal system. It sounds very similar to 2K's which I enjoy a great deal. Part of the fun of a system like that is the anticipation of when to go. It should make things more dynamic in that regard.

I'm kind of hoping it will be like Major League: "How's your wife and my kids?"

Didn't an earlier nugget on pulse pitching state one of the tweaks was for more pitches to miss outside the zone? Fewer meatballs from poor user input could be viewed as making it "easier" by some interpretations. Assuming that's the direction they went with it, I'm on board.
