I'm not sure where Moore said they had a working copy of Live 13 since Elite was canceled. I don't even know what that means. A working copy could mean one guy shooting a basketball.

"We took a year off so that we can focus on building the quality that it needs to be. I know better than anybody, having helped build NBA 2K in my early days, the power of what Greg Thomas and Visual Concepts do. It's their focus because, as you know, they’ve given up on NHL recently. NBA is the game that they need to focus on... when I think about 2K sports, it’s probably 80% of their portfolio from a unit basis and a revenue basis. It’s a great game, but we’re not walking off the court crying here," Moore stressed to us.

"We’re focused on building a great game for next year. The team has got the time to be able to look at everything that we need to do to make sure that we bring quality back up and be competitive. So we can go over the whole story again from last year - it was unfortunate, but we’re a brand and a company and a label that is very focused on building quality and we’re not just going to walk away from it; we’ve got a very, very talented team that’s already got stuff up and running even though it won't ship this year, it'll go next year. So we’ll be back."

NBA Live 13 Gameplay designer Scott O'Gallagher told me on facebook that that footage is from a old build.

None of that means it's a working title.

And it's Peter Moore. Honestly, last person whose word I'd take on the progress of a game.

That being said: It's a poor choice of words that only heighten expectations. No excuse there.

I just hope this game hits the shelves/marketplace. That way they can take the problems and improve. Its way better than taking a year off and then a build is leaked and all the observers can't even figure out which game they built off of...

Why is he the last person?

Oh I get it... after they gave FULL CONTROL of the basketball game to a Hockey man... thats why huh?

He said they had things up and running... this was back in 2010

Its 2012 now, but even if you say screw what he said... you cannot deny what you see

Sony's game lauded as the joke of the 3 was cacelled after that series and it still looks better than what we saw today

Whenever I hear of a he said/she said, he said/he said, or whatever type situation I always consider who has something to gain by lying about their take on the issue.

EA game developers say it is an early build...fair enough. Do they have something to gain by lying? Absolutely, by covering their butts they may save some sales for the game. Have they lied before? Seems they have according to multiple sources on this board.

2 or 3 guys in this thread who claim to have played footage at E3 that supports this being a newer build...do they have reason to lie? None that I can think of unless they just hate the Live series, which I doubt they do.

So, I'll go with the people who have no reason to lie over those who have tons of $$$...cough...reasons...$$$...cough..to lie.

Quite frankly..he has to say that. He can say that all the way up to October 1st.

It's just going to make him, all of the Devs and producers look even worse when the game comes out and it's clear that they are releasing a subpar product.

I'm tired of the nonsense.

All of this let's lock ourselves in a room and BAM...mid-September when we start releasing videos the sheep will be back on board.

No dice man.

It takes a leaked video for the community to actually give you constructive criticism of your game....AFTER 2 years??

Miss me with that.

Blah, ignore me on Peter Moore. I said that because I confused him with Peter Molyneux.

Anyway, up and running doesn't mean a complete working copy.

Like I said, I'll wait till EA releases video and actual demos are out before commenting on the gameplay.

I'm digging it. I loved Live 10, and this game looks like Live 10's sequel. I'm fine with it. My expectation wasn't very high to begin with. The mechanics are looking a little wonky, and LeBron's post up was weird, but since this is a pre-Alpha build I'm not surprised. The presentation was good, and the faces look fantastic. The dribbling needs improvement, but this is a good base for Live 13. 2K13 will be the better game, but Live will be beginning a rebuild.

Perhaps you've never worked for a corporation who swears by compliance and strict conduct codes but

Unless you just want to believe this or are gullable, what else is he going to say when his boss' just released a public statement saying its old?

If its so old, tell Scott and his buddies to release us a current video TODAY

I doubt they'll release the video but here I agree with you and everyone else bringing this up. EA has to say its old.

This whole NBA Live thing has been nothing but a complete mess. As a former Live supporter....meaning I defending the series to no end, It took 2K11 to make me realize that there was a better product to play.

I am completely devastated by the footage I saw today. I'm almost in complete denial that this can't be what I've waited two years to see. Then again, I'm in complete denial that 2K13 can't possibly be as good as it looks. Thank you 2K for keeping basketball as authentic as possible.

This stunt reeks of an intentional leak on EA's part to judge how people react.

If people like the video? Great!

If everyone agrees that it sucks? Oh, it was a pre-alpha build! Don't worry!

It's a low-risk way of finding out how people feel before they make a big investment with the game.

I've thought about this with the caveat they want a poor reception to wow people later with an amazing build.

But that was just CMH being hopeful that we would have two solid options.

Low risk? You have got to be kidding me.

No one likes this footage, even if it's from 6 months ago, it's horrible. Why would they want bad publicity, 1 month before the release of the game. NO ONE, really no one wants a bad start. Especially after 2 years of no NBA Live. After 2 years of hard work and a lot of money spent. Do you think the management/CEO's of EA Sports would agree with this kind of strategy? No, of course not.

Get off on the right foot, you can't afford any bad publicity. Of course it sounds good, show something bad, then convince the audience with amazing footage but that's not how the market works or thinks. The bad publicity has its effect on a certain type of audience, maybe people who don't visit game/basketball forums at all. They already made up their mind "Nba Live-ea sports" suck, lets get 2K. They don't want this game.

If EA is that stupid they could and should have killed the project months ago.

How soon people forget what happened with Elite 11.

Footage got out and the EA Devs were dumbfounded when people said that the game was crap.

They were literally trying to justify weird stuff that was happening in the game. Saying that oh you gotta give certain moves time and all sorts of nonsense.

Pre-alpha, old build, E3, whatever. The video looked like a tweaked version of Elite. That's cool. But be upfront about it.

They've been Silent since E3. But as soon as the first footage leaks...they want to speak and clear the air.

Slapping everybody in the face. Even the people who are gonna buy Live no matter whatever shape it's in.

i was thinking dreamcast when i watched it also. anyone expecting live to compete with 2k13 was dreaming hard. at best we could expect them to compete on the level of 2k10, maybe 11. but this looks like it could only compete with last gen. they had to be 2 or 3 years from truly competing. i was hoping they would. but.....

even the menus were eerily last gen. i wasn't expecting much after seeing that, but i was expecting something more.

kotaku posts that EA says it was an early build and does not represent where the game is now. well, unless it is from 2003 that's too bad. even with 6 more months of development, that build cannot provide enough confidence EA can close the huge gap 2k12 has. when 2k13 hits the shelves, it's going to be ugly for EA.

This would've been a serious Sports Game of the Year contender in 2002, shame.

It's low risk if canceling the game is one of the options on the table.

What's a lower risk: leaking a video, or holding an event where they try to show off the game, only for everyone to tell them how terrible it is?

It's much easier for them to leak a video and write it off as a pre-alpha build than it is for them to release "actual" footage and let people play the game.
