Looks like there are some improvements. I'll get it no matter what because I love hockey. Hopefully the improvements are noticeable and make for a better game. The skating does look good though.

Finally the true broadcast cam has arrived, I guess they do listen....eventually

I haven't purchased an NHL game since '06, I may consider picking this one up when it's released.

I agree.. change it up for once! I'm sick of those intros, they all look the same and it gets boring real quick. I'm all for game play, but play NBA 2k and see what real presentation looks like!!!

I just want to get my hands on this. Hopefully the defense isn't that easy to get around via the backwards skate. I know there were some bugs with backwards skating making the AI defense easy in the past, hopefully it isn't like that for this game.

But from that video it looks like it might be.

All in all looks very promising.
Agree RealmK.

Thankfully nearing the end of the video it showed a strategy that made it more difficult to carry the puck through the zones. I was a bit worried at the beginning of the vid.

And like you mentioned RealmK....with the higher game levels, and hopefully truly [all] effective sliders, NHL '13' looks to be quite promising.

Looks fantastic. I really need to work at 12 to get better. Pretty desperate to be a good hockey gamer!

Indeed Vikes, penalty sliders *have* to be effective this year. It was as much a game killer in 12 as the stability issues.

As a BeAGM or season player, it's good that if we want to we can stick with the out of the box gameplay, as that's usually the best provided no silly errors have crept in. No having to worry about jersey updates for the Jets and that update including tweaks and changes to pacify the online crowd.

Regarding the overkill of Reebok adds in the hoardings particularly at the Leafs barn, I'd imagine some of those will be replaced by promotional film or dvd ads if you're connected to the EA servers so it may not look so monotonous.

let me say, i really liked what i saw in general. the way the players were moving, staying in position, playing to their strategy. the PK'ers staying in lanes and not just running around and being way to aggressive. everything just looks better..

buuuuut...

Hopefully not, but just from that video, thats my prediction. Other than that I like what I see.
agree with the above..

it seems all the scoring comes from skating backwards for a second or so. that can be done this year as well. why are they acting like skating backwards like that is new? just bc of the animations? i see 2 or 3 of the same moves working on the goalie as usual. hope that is tuned so they dont go in as much.

but all in all, i liked what i have seen. much better than in years past for sure.

Looks pretty decent gameplay wise, interested to get my hands on it.

I'm also confused about all the talk about skating backwards... Haven't we had this capability since 08 or 09, just labeled as "vision control"? I know I've been using it to cycle defensemen along the blue line and such for years in this series.

Here's hoping there are also some good presentation upgrades that we're just not seeing yet. I agree with the folks saying gameplay first, but I'm also getting a little tired of playing the same looking game 6 years in a row.

If you do indeed pick up NHL 13, will we be looking forward to any of your roster/slider edits? I've seen what you've bin doing with 2K and have since been interested in how you'd approach the NHL series.

Is it me, or does the broadcast cam look the same as it always did?
Yes, because there are actually two broadcast cams now. You saw the old one, and they show the new one during maybe the last 10 secohds or so, right after the old one.

I hope and pray that they finally addressed presentation. What have they honestly done since NHL 09? Most of the intros are the same, they're missing arena licenses, goal celebrations have been dry and have worsened since NHL 10... BAGM lacks immersion...and yet NCAA, even Madden's presentation's improved.

EA needs to step up with presentation in this year's NHL game. The new broadcast camera is nice and I like the dynamic real-time presentation (no cutscenes) idea, but that won't be enough. Gameplay is first priority, but without presentation, what do you have?

Simply put: hockey, and all sports is half game, half pagentry. If you only have the gameplay, it's really an incomplete product.

100% agreed. That final goal that was scored in the video where Sharp, Kane, or whoever scored by skating backwards into the slot and ripping one home with guys on top of him scares the absolute hell out of me. I'm pretty sure that will be glitch number one for online, but since I don't play online any more I shouldn't have to worry about it.

The game definitely looks different though, which is good because it needed serious change. The goalies also looked pretty good (they still move funny and warp but I won't get into that) with the different types of saves. Quick's save was actually extremely reminiscent of the playoffs. Overall it looks like it's a step in the right direction. Playing the demo will be the biggest indicator on what to think of the game though. It's nice to at least see some footage though.

BTW that PK was sweet. I don't think there will be anymore start from the corner, easily beat the defender and tee up a slapper from the slot everytime on the powerplay against the AI. That is huge for this game. If the strategies all work how they should, this change alone will make this game leaps better.

It all looks great and looks like it will make the game a ton better offline; however, all the "new" backskating you can do with the puck around the faceoff dots looks like it will lead to the online play moving further and further away from real hockey. That last goal scored in the video where he skates backwards into the middle from the dot and shoots reminds me of the cheese breakaway move from a couple NHL games ago where you would skate in with your back to the goalie and just shoot it around him every time.

# 37 jyoung @ 07/22/12 07:23 PM
It will also be interesting to see how players respond to getting checked while carrying the puck with the new backskating animations.

In NHL 12, it's impossible to hit anyone who's skating backwards with the puck. Every time, you just bounce right off the puck carrier.

I remember in NHL 10 or 11 I was disappointed with something being in the saved highlight that, I thought, shouldn't have been there because it wasn't in the automatic replays.

I can't recall. Anyone have any insight, or any confirmation on an actual broadcast camera?
I do know for certain that it was in-game footage, because the score-ticker isn't shown for replays. So yes, a real broadcast camera is in game.

wow that looks AMAZING!!!.

skating looks great.

passes are too accurate but cant reaaly judge that on these sliders.

blue line defense by the ai will really add to the game. the new jersey 4 man line at the blue line was amazing to see. total 180.

goalies are improved in their movement but i am afraid that top shelf goals will still rule the day if you try to score from clean shots. yes i know top shelf is a good way to score in real life but there are plenty of goals scored on the bottom part of the net or even along the ice from cleqn shots. i have always had this complaint for ea nhl....after a while u find yourself shooting only high net. one thing i will definitely look for in the demo.
