NCAA Football 13 News Post

Death, Taxes and a new version of NCAA Football in July.

That's the mantra around OS, and it signals a brand new release season for sports gamers. This year's NCAA Football 13 comes packed with enhancements to the passing game, presentation and dynasty mode -- but it is missing the real time physics engine which Madden is going to be debuting in a month.

With that in mind, and with the limited nature of the improvements, one can't help but feel that this year's NCAA Football iteration has a bit of a lame-duck feeling to it.

However, if you are willing to stomach a lot of the same old flaws within the series and some unrealistic moments of football, there is a fun game of pigskin waiting to be unleashed.

It will be interesting to see, as an NCAA guy 1st and Madden guy 2nd, if the acclaimed new bells and whistles will be enough to move it to number 1 and make this game obsolete. Given the issues with editing and dynasty mode in Madden I'll probably still be playing NCAA well into next year.
This is the the thing (well... one of alot of things) that pi**es me off about EA. It's the fact that the people who buy the games have to do work themselves to try and make the game better instead of EA (who is SUPPOSED to do the work) actually setting the sliders and testing it out to see what works best. I will rent the game but the demo was really too uninspiring for me to actually go out and buy the game first.

I'd give this game a solid 8. Enjoying it so far. Thanks to xIZ GONE RAINx for the roster with names! Oh and for $44.99 from Amazon, can't complain.

Anybody know how to cut the thing off where you are playing and the computer assist you on running your routes. It's annoying because when I try to run them their is this brief delay of me coming off of the line.

I meant to insert a question mark at the end of that first sentence.

I own 11 and 12 and when you say if you have 12, 13 is not something you would really need......I have to disagree. The passing imrovements alone make it a good upgrade. Nothing infuriated me more than having 2 types of passes and zero variety plus the dreaded super lB's and DB's morphing through your WR's.

Now the passing game is so damn good. Organic and smooth, lot's of great animations now too.

Anyway great review.

Nice review! Very in depth.

I never heard about a revamp in wr/db interactions.... Is that just the catching animations? Is it in madden as well?

if you rate madden worse then you are biased

For now, just know that dynasty mode is deeper, it is still accessible, and it's better. If you let it, Dynasty Mode will suck you in and not let you go.
Yea, whatever you say. Adding more tedious & time consuming aspects to recruiting does not make dynasty mode NCAA's saving grace. Even dynamic conference prestige (which may or may not actually effect anything) doesn't make it worth while.

It's still, sadly, a far cry from even the PS2 days and way, waaaaayyyy off from what we want to see. What else exactly was added that make it so "immersive"? - zip. It's essentially a clone with poorly implemented updates and more recruiting non-sense! Don't try to sell it as anything else.

This game, as whole, is at best a small improvement on 12.. With that, and the expectations going from year to year - it's yet another disappointing product by a team that clearly has ran out of motivation, ideas, and talent over the last 7-8 years.

Time for big changes because this game is the laughing stock of major sports video games, and is without a doubt EA's biggest dud product.

Sounds like 13 is a small improvement over 12. Some people seem to be huge fans of the new passing, but I can't find myself justifying a $50-$60 purchase on new passing mechanics and a cheesy (IMO) Heisman challenge mode.

Don't get me wrong, I do like some of the improvements, but It just seems like a very mediocre upgrade considering I still have NCAA 12 which offers a passable NCAA experience. I'll probably pick up NCAA 13 in the used bin sometime in the future.

EA PLEASE INCREASE (DO A PATCH) ON WEAR, TEAR AND DIRT STAINS ON AWAY JERSEYS. PLAYED MIAMI AT FLORIDA STATE IN HEAVY RAIN AND MIAMIS AWAY JERSEYS WERE NOT EVEN CLOSE TO BEING AS DIRTY AS FLORIDA STATES JERSEYS!!!! NCAA11 U PUT A PATCH OUT TO FIX AND 12 U DIDN'T CARE TO FIX/PATCH!!! LUCKLY I WAS ABLE TO RENT NCAA 13 SO IF THIS NOT FIXED/PATCHED ASAP.. U DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT GETTING MY HARD EARNED $$$. HOW HARD IS IT TO MAKE SURE BOTH JERSEYS GET THE SAME AMOUNT OF DIRT DEGRADATION?!?

It looks like they made some nice updates to training results, too often in the last couple versions i would sign 15 3* prospects low 60's to start still as redshirt sophomores or juniprs only improved a 67 maybe one or two crack 70 but when you start off with a 2 or 3 star program who has a couple 80 rated guys you can compete with. In 3 years of winning fairly consistently 7-5 8-4 with a c+ offense defense only to drop to d+ after spending 3 years fighting for recruits it makes rebuilding unrewarding. If players progressed in season that would make less of a jump reasonable. I went through year one with ut and the lower guys improved only a point or two. On the whole though must guys made growth you can work with. 4-6 points a few in the 7, 8, 9 range. Definitely an improvement over last few years.

Nice read!

I was planning on just sticking with '12 (with Purplepower's upcoming / re-rated rosters for the '13 season) for my football fix...

Well, at least until I make my annual "post patch" Madden decision...

After reading this, I mos def sticking to that plan!

Thanks for the detailed insight, Chris!

I really like the fact a recruit doesn't automatically have 10 schools listed and you just have to hope no one pn that list offers in the 3-4 weeks it could to break in the top 10. Now if you are one of the first to show interest you almost feel like faith you put in a kid early on really pays off. I like the gem and bust feature as well, i had a low 4* star qb go from 70 to 77 and is my qb of the future. But i a lso got the 6th rated tackle drop from a 77 to a 71with iffy strength so he may struggle in the sec but its nice to have those wildcards. Even got a couple 3's in the 66-70 range so chances for the all important glue guys needed that build depth and solid starters down the road. So my favorite additions to this point are in the details. Nice receiver/ db interactions as well make for a nice change in game. I dont know if my controllers giving out pr a glitch in the way I'm running under the ball but have noticed a few times when i try to user catch my reciever wont reach for the ball. Seems to happen more when i try to adjust my angle/path to the ball. Overall plays much like the old versions an update in presentation would make for a nice improvement. Do like the score updates.
